  1. I'm with you on this one. That one-way ticket would be a non-stop to the private south Pacific island I just bought. Don't forget the blender and gogo girls Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. It is a very interesting debate and goes to the heart of a global economy and the direction the world has taken for the past 60 years. Firstly in the west people desire cheap goods. They feel that TV, iPads, phones and the like are a basic right and almost everyone over 10 years old expects to own these toys. Secondly most people want to see workers in developing countries paid more and treated better, but this would raise the cost of the goods they desire. Third point. Most workers in a developing nation are harder working and less demanding than western counterparts. I believe eventually it will come full circle and the "give me" nature of the west will come crashing down. The current model is unsustainable. We will get deeper into debt, other nations won't and they will succeed us as the successful nations. We are already seeing 1st world countries requiring aid to keep them afloat (European debt crisis). I wonder how many decades it will be before the US and UK join the ranks. 3. Bullshit, bring the boys (and girls) home, reduce the size of the government and bring the surplus back. There are still hundreds of millions of people in the United States and they can generate some serious cash. Fiscal responsibility is the only real way to end this problem, sweeping the problem under the carpet and saving it for later will not ever be the correct thing to do. Don't kid yourself. How much money are we spending on military each day again? each year? how much has been commited in the coming years... For what? We (UK and US) have made our bed and have to lie in it. There is no moral option of walking away from the mess we have created in Iraq - no matter how bad our finances are. As for the comment on reducing military spending, sure slash the R&D budgets. The US spends a disproportionate amount on its military. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. FWIW my take is that by opening an account for the sake of trolling, a thread about the trolls alter ego is not the same as a thread about a poster. As every regular poster knows that this is a troll identity, it "could" have been a fun thread in the feed the troll kind of way. I am not good at figuring out who is who when these spook accounts are created, so I have no idea who the real identity is behind this user name. 5. So are you saying that the country is screwed already? It looks like all that is holding the nation up is external belief that the creditors will get their money back. If that slides so does everything else surely? Do you think an accomodation will be reached in time for Tuesday Mike? I am not really clued up on the who debt ceiling issue and the real consequences. One thing that does strike me is that the US government appears to still be adopting the "spend your way out of debt" approach that Gordon Brown took. That approach is doomed to failure in the longer term. It does appear at face value the issue might be properly addressed by having to tighten their belts in the US. I must say that I was mildly surprised to not see a bit of panic buying, stocking up on rifles and ammunition that appears to happen in the US whenever a major political event is likely to take place. 7. Meso I agree with most of your post. The only thing is that by allowing someone under 13 to have an account you are teaching them not to follow rules. It is a nightmare as a parent to keep up with what kids are doing, but in some ways technology helps the parent. It is much easier to see what friends of your child do and say on facebook, than it is do find out what they get up to behind the bike shed for example. 8. Why did you have to say that.. Even if things could change while looking down from 12500 feet, I do really not feel afraid to go skydive in about 2 weeks. But is it really just a question of WHEN and not IF you are destined to hit ground too fast..? (Wow..tripple-posting..) I don't believe that it is a case of when. If I truly believed that I would die skydiving I would stop. I do understand that I COULD die and I do my best to stay safe. I believe the OP is correct in that people add additional risks over time. However if you stayed with the truly safest skydive - you would probably be doing solo hop and pops at 5000 feet on a large student canopy. I believe that would get boring fairly quickly. So we rationalise and increase the complexity of dives to keep them fun, despite the fact that it adds risk in varying degrees. 9. I have used it a bit over the last couple of years, my daughter uses it as her main source of music. We both use the free version which has ad's on but not overwhelming. I believe the T&C's were changed a couple of months ago and on the free version you are limited to 10 hours of music a month. 11. Ok my views on why it was despicable. He had no reason to bring up the Hitler Youth. The story is that a bunch of kids got shot and killed. Why should it be disturbing? He spends more time expounding his views on political camps than showing compassion for the victims THAT is disturbing. He spent time undermining the reputation (slandering) the dead and yet he is such an ill informed prick that he was't even certain which day the shooting took place on! You have repeatedly said that the thread title is not what he said, and that people are lying about what he said. It is an accurate summary of his statement and in all honesty it does not take much reading comprehension to follow. If you had stopped your previous post at this point you would have stopped digging. In fact that post Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. You make that sound like Shah may not enjoy it. Heck he is busy promoting the gay lifestyle and appears to be gradually moving in that direction. It might actually be a bonus for him Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Yes, and he compared it to a Hitler Youth camp. And who goes to a Hitler Youth camp? "If you are right, I will be back and say as much and you can address the tp in my ears " It's so sad it's not even funny Yep It is sad alright Sad that people look for any way to twist a statment into some kind of evil thing And you stomp along in that shit just like the rest of them I really hope that you are trolling and don't believe what you are writing in this thread. It is funny as hell, especially after your initial post. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. Check out meetup.com. I haven't actually used it, but I heard about it on the radio. If you have a look there are normally a reasonable amount of people getting together. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. He said 2 million Since it is hypothetical I thought I might get a bargain for the magic money. If we have to be realistic with our hypothetical money then I suppose I would like an otter with comfy seats... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  17. As this guy is on Fox. Doesn't another thread title fit nicely in here? "Would you expect anything different..." I don't like our hate laws in Europe and believe they are too constrictive of free speech, but rhetoric like this really does need to be curtailed. 18. I will never swoop. 2 of the 3 people that I have known who died skydiving were swooping at the time. The only fatality I have witnessed first hand was swoop gone wrong. A good friend will never jump again having broken his back swooping. On top of this I am too slow and clumsy to be going fast near the ground. Rather like the tortoise in the old fable, I would rather plod along and get to the end successfully. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. After such a long break you will want to go back through a full first jump course. I would recommend AFF and as you have previous experience you may be allowed to merge or skip levels. On a FJC you would start on a student canopy which will really impress you! The flare is very powerful and landings should be very soft. Packing methods and the equipment have changed quite a lot. Even from the 1990's when I first jumped. So now AAD's are commonplace, pilot chute location is typically bottom of container. I think the equipment is much more reliable than it used to be, however as usual people have found ways to keep the risk up. Have fun and good luck on your decision. 20. I would think it might be on the order of up to 1/4 of a second, maybe even more. That would be 250 milliseconds, or 250,000 microseconds. 1/4 of a second is a very long time isn't it? I am more used to timescales measured in nano and micro seconds in electronics. Is a spring really that slow? Not that it matters much. It might not be just the spring. If the cutter is below the pilot chute (and spring), but above the freebag, there's plenty of time between the pilot chute launching and the cutter clearing the closing loop. The pilot chute would have to go to full bridle extension and lift the bag. If the cutter is above the pilot chute, sure, the closing loop might clear the cutter in a very small amount of time. But the duration of the "window of opportunity" depends on cutter placement. Thanks, I can see how that could take a fairly long time to happen. 22. If you look at the timeline, he was aware of this prior to the pay-off. That is quite some time ago and according to the review currently going on there was "clear evidence of criminal activity" shown in the various email trails sent out for legal review. By not taking the appropriate actions of handing his staff over to the police, or at the very least firing them he became complicit. As to Rupert's involvement I am sure in time it will come to light. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/21/rupert-murdoch-eye-off-ball As for asking for evidence, there becomes a point where it is pretty obvious to all but the most ardent supporters that this is endemic to the organisation as a whole and therefore as CEO the bucks stops at his door. 23. Thanks very interesting and a very good report. It would appear that lack of currency and perhaps she lost altitude awareness was the root cause. Interesting that the Argus issue is QA control on the metal hardness and that the commission were able to replicate the failures quite easily (by this I mean, it doesn't sound like they had to try hundreds of times for a single failure). 24. I saw that and wondered if any posts would come of it. I have a slightly different take in that I think the victim showed true humanity as people of other religions and beliefs have done similar. BUT it certainly goes to show that Muslims are generally no different to us heathens. What he tried to do, took a lot of courage and conviction. 25. Mike, You asked for evidence that Murdoch was personally involved. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14242763 This article is pretty explicit and shows that he was at the very least involved the cover-up. I don't see any point continuing to ask "show me the e-mail" because the email chain referenced in this link WILL see the light of day and show him up. If it doesn't then it shows complete incompetence, because why would you authorise a payment based on hearsay? If I were you I would back away gracefully, and admit that the Murdoch's are not "shiny happy people" and leave it at that.
