  1. For what it is worth I really liked the way that the Farm handled my re-currency (granted I only had 100+ jumps). I did the full FJC along with other AFF students, and then did a modified level 3 with Jeremy and Mike. There was a full understanding that if I failed to perform I would not proceed. I then did a modified level 5 prior to being cleared. As it turned out my second jump became a "fun jump" as I had completed the tasks by 9.5k. Clearly if I had had problems I could have been taken at a slower pace, and importantly that is where my expectations were set. 2. From the SIM it does not have to be AFF rated instructor. So I was asking how a Static Line Rated instructor would supervise recurrency. I realise this is fairly hyperthetical as SL is a dying training method. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. Just out of curiosity my understanding is that a SL trained instructor can supervise re-currency. Based on this incident would you expect a D license jumper to do a SL jump with a practice pull? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. Jeremy was an amazing person. He did my re-currency dive and spent time going through things with me on my last visit to the farm a couple of weeks ago. Terrible news and I hope that Nicole heals up soon. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. It took me a while to figure that out. Even reading your post where it is explicit, it is hard to remember the distinction of a single skydive versus being a runner. If you wrapped up the stats using skydiver for the population, it would change the picture quite drastically. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. I stumbled across this article/web page while looking for something else. http://www.medicine.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/booth/Risk/sports.html I think the statistics are interesting, even if I don't believe they are completely correct. The biggest flag to me is the population estimates (skydiving is higher than running or swimming). Anyway for a cool statistic you can tell someone that Skydiving in Sweden is only twice as dangerous as playing table tennis in Germany. 7. I was being an arse. Cypress is a tree, Cypres is an AAD. Most people make the mistake. I think there is a general feeling that Cypres is the market leader with the best product, but that Vigil may be more cost effective. There are a few cases of Vigils firing due to their algorithms not filtering out pressure changes in the same manner as other brands. I currently jump whatever is in the rental gear, when I come to buy it will be based on price and will either be a Vigil or Cyres as both are good enough for me. 8. If I am choosing an AAD then a Vigil. I'll keep the Cypress for the garden There is a feeling (circumstantial evidence) that Cypres are the market leaders in terms of having the most advanced algorithms and less likely to misfire. 9. That landing area was bigger than quite a few DZ's So do you agree with the fact that the rules appear to have been "bent" to accommodate him? 70-200 jumps for a C license is not difficult to achieve if you are funded. The majority of the jumps could be done as a hop and pop so you are talking a couple of weeks effort. Then there would be no need to bend the rules. 10. +1 +2 Wow this is a tough crowd, I would like to see what you find enjoyable (.)(.) I liked the footage for a snapshot of skydiving, the narration wasn't my style though. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. 4200 miles I live in the UK, but travel to the US for business which is when I get a chance to jump. So STF is my "home" dz. I don't have BPA membership so I can't jump in the UK. I suppose technically Spain is my closest DZ as Empubravia is USPA affiliated. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    coaches

This is what I HATE about the "coach" rating. No talent, 100 jumps, got the rating... Screw the newbies!!!!! Free jumps!!!! As someone looking into the coach rating, I would hope that you are wrong. Granted someone with 100 jumps is not as skilled a jumper as someone with a C or D license. The course outline shows a fair amount of emphasis on the teaching aspect which is something that jumps (and skydiving talent) don't necessarily build on. I see the coach rating as a step towards jumping with and helping new jumpers. A coach is really the first person who is not an instructor that you should be jumping with. For the student that is a step forward and it obviously carries significant responsibility for the coach. I would hope that a newly qualified coach is providing their services free of charge as they are getting as much from the jump as the student. However having the slot paid for as a coach should be adequate return for the coach who is a fun jumper (not their day job). I also think we either have beer rules or tipping. I like the beer rules so would prefer to see them stay (but then I haven't made a career out of jumping). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Probably should pick a couple different faces for your comment about him and doing that! Who knows it is the farm after all. Not long ago he did post something about the dog... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. You know, it's like what you do alone in the evening, while looking at the computer, but with other people involved. Knowing where Andy's computer is - if he does it while looking at the computer other people are likely to be involved Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. Congrats. I got my official A license number in the post today
  16. Nope. 6-4 B1 "Skydivers participating in night jumping should meet all the requirements for a USPA B or higher license." You don't have to apply for and pay for the B license to do night jumps. You just have to have the card filled out and signed off. Ok thanks for the correction. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  17. This is scary. You reacted having no clue what was going on. I think you need to revisit, study, drill and re-drill your life-saving EPs. I think you got lucky. With a lazy throw can you see the pilot chute if you look over your shoulder? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. Recurrency training goes out to 90 days from 60 days. Night jumps require a B license or higher (water jumps only require an A plus training) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. Popsjumper taught me this little reminder. As it is so easy to remember I thought I would post it.
  20. I jumped there years ago, but there were more spectators. A demo jump should promote the sport in a positive fashion...he's got US talking about it, and it is posted on the inner-web. Yes it's a demo jump, ...with 75 jumps an EMPTY stadium is probably a good place for him to be doing them. Sorry Jim, I mean't a hypothetical advert not this specific case? An advert is promotional and so might be seen as meeting the requirements if done off dz. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    when women...

When women try and use their gender to manipulate me it really pisses me off It doesn't happen very often but jeez please don't. The first time it happened was I had a really good looking female engineer working for me (Shah they do exist). But she was not overly competent and absolutely guaranteed that if her status update was not going to be positive her cleavage was made prominent. Nice to look at but she still got fired. Now I have a "problem" client. Their solution move me onto dealing with the good looking female director. She gushes over me and everything that I do is simply "awesome" or "fantastic". Passed her onto my wife to deal with Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. Been watching too much Harold and Kumar? There is just something about TSA and US immigration that makes me very nervous. I get the distinct feeling that if you catch the wrong person on a bad day things could go very badly. Gitmo was a joke, but seriously my life would be pretty fucked up if I got myself banned from entering the US on business. But on topic - so long as people are informed of the risks I am happy, just no surprises. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. I have nothing against drug use, but please don't surprise me. I am a foreigner and don't want to end up in gitmo cause I get to the airport stoned Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. Ok serious question here. From the wording of the SIM would a jump for an advert be classified as an exhibition jump? Granted an experienced jumper is going to make a better ad than a low jump numbers person. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  25. I am not sure how big the site is, but I would assume that it is large enough to meet the open field or level 1 requirements (effectively 250 000 square foot or bigger). Then the requirements are for a C license plus a few other restrictions. For what it is worth if the article is correct then with 70 jumps, he doesn't meet the 200 jump requirement. I don't know if it is possible to waiver that requirement though? That said maybe he was just late for the event and it wasn't for the benefit of the spectators The media often get stuff wrong, so for all we know the 70 jumps was this year.
