I was wondering if anyone had ever tried this and how it worked out for them? Background - I currently rent gear which gives me access to what I like. I have come to be certain that I want to stick with a Sabre 2 210 for the next couple of hundred jumps. I am on a budget and considered getting a rig without an AAD as my first 100 jumps I did not have an AAD, so I am not afraid of not having one. But as a father and husband I feel that it is my responsibility (duty) to take reasonable precautions. In addition doing RW and being a low timer probably puts me right in the middle of the "usual suspects" for AAD fires. It seems like finding someone who is on a similar level and who also can't jump their ass off over a weekend could provide access to a rig with everything. Naturally you would want ground rules about conflicts, cost of damage etc. *Of course all this goes away if my wife starts jumping as she'll then support my request to sell the house, car and kids for jumps and shiny new gear Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

There was a very interesting discussion this weekend between someone who is starting the path towards becoming an AFF-I and 2 current AFF-I's (well one is not so current). They discussed the mindset of an AFF instructor and how you need to think differently and the responsibilities. It was very enlightening and I must say it is the first discussion that I have witnessed a 600+ jumper clearly hesitant. Interesting Dilemma this weekend
nigel99 replied to JohnRich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My only experience of cloud was a 3 way. The formation fell apart above the cloud, we all looked at each tracked away and then held position once we were in the cloud. It worked but it scared me. We knew entering the cloud that we had good separation. If it ever happens to me again, I am riding the plane down or making alternative plans like switching to a hop and pop under the clouds. Spending 20-30 seconds falling through white stuff with zero visibility seems to be tempting fate. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Looking For Best No Dogs, No Kids DZ

Isn't that where Shah jumps? I think he's safer with the dogs & kids Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Thanks for putting it together Andy. We all had fun and learn't something. We'll have to do it again as soon as Kevin is over 200 jumps. We did 3 jumps with the distances added up. 9 of us competed with 3 out on a pass, highest wingloading first and open at 3k, next at 4k and last out at 5k. After 2 jumps we had a debrief and reviewed canopy flight. Quite a few "up-jumpers" were shooting the target on the full altitude loads to see how they would do as well. Kevin won with a grand total of 3 feet (he has about 170 jumps). If you are working on your accuracy for your A, B, C license or Pro rating, I would strongly recommend getting people together and doing a competition. All it needs is a frisby, a tape measure and a willing judge. It is ideal if an instructor is prepared to judge as you can include the debrief after 1 or 2 jumps. True enough. I had no objections to the war as unlike Iraq there was some validity. My honest opinion is that the US is a little gung ho and believes it can simply beat people into submission. They are learning the hard way that other nations have different views and ways of life that they don't all want to give over. Your mom should have hired you a math tutor. Blues, Dave When 10 years really does arrive maybe he'll post his 11 or 12 year thread When the post was first done, I remember thinking WTF the Afganistan war started before 9/11! I had to go and check the dates (Oct 01). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Should the AAD activation altitude be raised to 1250 feet?
nigel99 replied to JohnSherman's topic in Gear and Rigging
Firstly it doesn't take much of a pilot chute hesitation before a substantial amount of 750 foot is used up. But we already have a fairly substantial quantity of two out situations where people open low. There was a discussion in the incidents thread about people who want to open higher due to a long spot and the dangers that it can present. So raising the AAD firing threshold would require the opening altitudes be raised for everyone to avoid that creating a new risk. That is fine for everyone jumping at turbine dz's but what about people at Cessna dz's? Suddenly the ability to do a 4 way out of a cessna becomes nigh on impossible. My personal view is that AADs should remain at 750ft. Possibly student AADs could fire at the 500 foot higher margin as they already open higher (A license and students are supposed to be pack open at 3k). Do as I say, not as I do. Some of us have to learn the hard way. But, since the day I landed and found that I didn't have a d-bag and PC still attached, I'm much more conscientious about it....once a month or so depending on jump frequency. It wasn't funny then but it is now....me turning in circles, checking the ground, digging into the canopy looking for them and not figuring out why I couldn't find them until.......DING!.......the light came on. *headslap* You told me that story while we were cleaning crap off a cutaway cable that hadn't been cleaned since you and Twardo were kids Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Determining wind direction under canopy
nigel99 replied to nigel99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think that one aspect to remember is that when we are flying our pattern observing the behaviour of this method it will really help you to understand the winds and compensate accordingly. So you don't need to fly a truly "square" pattern if turning 70 or 110 degrees places you in a better position. I realise that this is stating the obvious, but for me it was a slight aha moment. I have been using the pattern to check for hazards (on the ground) and because I have been told to fly a pattern. I now have a better grasp of the benefits of a pattern. Determining wind direction under canopy
nigel99 replied to nigel99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thought I would share some insight that I got this evening. You pick a straight line under canopy and observe which direction you are crabbing. You then turn to face into the direction of the crab and repeat. You very quickly determine which way is downwind/upwind. It also very neatly fits into flying a correct pattern as you can use the same observations to safely ensure you are flying into the wind. It is pretty obvious and something that I have been told before, however the I have never had it described so clearly before. Just think about what we are all taught for spotting and apply it to landing. Anyway the above is why I love hanging out with older skydivers/jump pilots. I went out to Jumping for Fun in Kentucky to hopefully get an evening hop and pop in from a Cessna but unfortunately it was only me and the DZO Bill. It was also fascinating to talk flying skydivers and the FAR's makes it easier to remember when you have stories that apply. You say that like you think I'm going to miss out on something in the future. Don't get my hopes up. You love all the women pampering and dotting over you. You just need to keep up the old man act, besides now Copeland is out of town you don't have so much competition. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Generally, it seems to be a woman's goal in life. Snag a sucker so they can quit with the primping. Funny how and why so many women do that. You realize that you are now squarely in the dog box with Shah! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

No exclusion for B holders. Use it towards your C! Andy has suggested breaking it into sub 100 and sub 200. That sucks cause it puts me against you guys going for your C Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Any potential A or B license jumpers are interested in an informal accuracy competition at the Farm 25th June let popsjumper know. It should be a fun way to get a couple of accuracy jumps in towards your license.
