    Chain letter

Not true.. it happens about every five years. Actually, on average, every 7 years. (Everytime July 1st is a Friday) I got this email from a family member, and replied with the comment "stupid americans will believe anything that someone tells them in an email, even if a brief consideration would tell them it can't be true", but since Nigel got it, perhaps I should at least add Great Britian to the pool of stupid. I got it from my aunt in Australia - so it is pretty widespread. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    Chain letter

I was sent one of those crappy chain letters. They messed up as the formula only works if you were born before the year 2000. I haven't checked if it is true but this July we have 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and this only occurs once every 823 years. If true it is interesting. 3. There are two types of currency. The first is to stay "legit". Within the US it is clearly laid out in the SIM. The second, is currency in terms of maintaining and developing your skillset. In reality this differs from one person to another. I have found that anything over 2 weeks, my skill level drops back a notch and my anxiety increases. If you intend to jump alot in one day you also need to consider the fact that your performance will start to tail off later in the day. I don't like doing more than 4 or 5 in a day. The 3rd jump of the day is my favourite. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. My father probably rates towards the top of the list. In fact a few relatives won't let him stay. He smokes and used to "sneak" smoking indoors. He also has a bad leg from a car accident so he doesn't like walking. Once he left my wife found a bucket full of piss in the bedroom that he had been using at night and hadn't bothered to empty. Oh the irony

I don’t skydive the public arena. the people that will attend to my body should i go in either at terminal or under canopy are people who make the same choices I made in jumping. I personally don't give a toss if a helmet-less rider has permanent brain damage, or get's their head smashed open as long as is does not negatively impact on me, or other innocent bystanders, all for the sake of them wanting to feel wind in their hair (or lack of it) stand in front of a friggin fan if you're after that. The "freedom" argument well that's a load of marketing bullshit, I've been riding motorbikes for over 30 years cant say that my "Freedom" has ever been enhanced by riding. What a load of WANK. Do what you want on your own private property, just don’t bring you moronic helmet-less selfish asinine arguments to the table. Take responsibility for your head and save others the expense of seeing your mangled remains of a brainless vessel should you open it up on the road. Firstly to ensure there is no misunderstanding. By freedom I think of wind on face, hair blowing the breeze, bugs going in your mouth, nothing to do with rights and responsibilities. Secondly as I pointed out in my first post, I wear a helmet and would even if it wasn't the law when riding on the roads. Oh the irony

Ok I'll bite. What possible hazards could come from wearing a helmet that would outweigh the risk of you coming off and having your brains physically overtake you when you hit the kerb (or whatever)? Do they mess up your hair do?? First off you guys are funny (you, shrop and squeak). You know what a mess a skydiving terminal accident makes right? I wear a helmet on a bike whenever I am on the road, and would even if it was not the law. But I have riden lots of times off road on farms and there is nothing nicer than riding around in a pair of short, flip flops and a tee shirt on a hot day (Shrop, I realise that hot days don't exist in your world). So the benefits of riding with no helmet have nothing to do with safety (no-one in their right mind could argue otherwise), but there is the ability to have the wind in your hair, and the feeling of really being out in the open. If I was riding a cruiser on a low speed route (30MPh), in hot humid weather like you get in the southern US states, I would seriously consider not wearing a helmet on some occasions. Kids

That assumes that he really is the father. I wifes parents had a child after he was snipped and I have always wondered... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  8. Your not married are you? Sorry but if my mother sent that e-mail to my wife it would be the last we saw of her (my mother that is). It's not evil - but then it is not a great way to setup the relationship with your future daughter in law. * If you are wanting to be fair and balanced we have no idea of much of a bitch the daughter in law might be. But where would the fun be if she deserved the email? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. I saw an article on BBC about the following email sent from a british future mother-in-law in the UK. Wow that is one uptight bitch!. http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/withering-heights-future-motherinlaws-attack-on-fiancee-goes-global-20110630-1gt1v.html I think relationships in that household are going to be rather strained - especially now that the email has hit virtually every major news outlet in the UK, some in the US and Australia Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. I believe all tandems now need to be over 18 in the USA to comply with the USPA.http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=4058693;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; However Static Line and AFF are probably treated differently at some dz's. As a parent, I would suggest not giving a skydive as a 16th birthday present. If she is really keen to jump, then give some tunnel time instead. It will build her freefall skills in preparation for actual jumping. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. Thanks for explaining. I had thought that some people were saying, that because it is a coach jump you should folllow the coach rule set, EVEN if you are an AFF-I. That means that even though you have the ability to catch and stabilise, you shouldn't because it is a coach jump. I realize that chasing someone when you are not trained to do so, could easily place you both in more danger than following the rules. 12. My understanding of pops reply is that the rules for instructors are there to save the instructors life. No instructor is obliged to "chase a student into the ground". So while the rules tell you to give up at x altitude and save your life, under certain circumstances he will bend or break those rules knowing full well that he is compromising his own safety. I guess rules for instructors come in 2 buckets, those to protect the well being of your students, and those to protect you. I am just stating my understanding of his post(s). I may be completely wrong though. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Hi Squeak. It looks pretty simple assuming that Australian Skydiving is part of the FAI. This quote is from the SIM. For part 3 you can look on the USPA website and download a copy of the license application form. I am guessing that in order to "meet the requirements" you need to do the exams, so you probably would want to download a copy of the SIM as it includes the relevant FAA regulations. 14. You have reminded me. Last week driving down to Georgia I was listening to playboy radio and an old guy phoned in asking how to meet women. According to him there were NO women in his town - not even one. It was very funny to hear Shah live. She suggested he joined a cooking club to meet women - he reckoned that women who went to cooking clubs were fat Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. To be fair the farm has a reasonable number of rental rigs that are in excellent condition (like I say my favourite rig is has a brand new Sabre 2 210 in it). If you rent by the day t the farm then the finances work out cheaper than the cost of ownership for my jumping pattern - I am almost certain. It really boils down to thinking of an idea that could give me better access to what I want. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. Where on earth are you jumping at that rents student gear with no AAD in it? I jump without an AAD but it's my rig. And yes I do plan on putting an AAD in it. After watching someone's full face helmet come off of their head and and almost KO me in the face (I wear an open face Gath) I've decided that an AAD might not be a bad idea. As far as this time share idea of yours personally I'd be stashing money back every time I could until I could afford a rig. I rented gear for 5 years. I'm not married but I had college and all of it's expenses to deal with. I also was lucky that for a long time Thursday and Fridays were free gear rental so my gear renting expense wasn't anywhere as high as it could have been. You definitely need to get some gear. Nothing beats consistency under canopy than jumping the same thing every time you jump. Good Luck, I hope you find the deal of a lifetime. Nothing like owning your own gear Somehow we've got our lines crossed. I rent gear with an AAD. My first hundred jumps were before Cypres was mainstream (early 90's). All recent jumps have had AAD's. 17. He's already stated that skychicks are crap because they have to many guys chasing them... Might have changed his tune though. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. I have a budget of ~$300 a month for hobbies (skydiving). If I want an AAD then I probably need to send ~$2000 which is a fair number of months of jumping or doing less jumps. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. I believe that this is the Cedartown incident. SDG (Skydive Georgia...) One of the jumpers from there mentioned it was not their aircraft or pilot- I think to try and avoid the whole "skyride are ..." argument. 20. Hey I am still a newbie and hopefully an old salt will chip in. But I would avoid spiraling. We are in-experienced meaning that we take longer to process what we see and react to it. So slower is better. Points to consider though. 1) AFF students and tandems will probably be higher and slower than you. Tandems aren't really a worry as they are more experienced than us. 2) Watch out for the next load if there are multiple planes or you are high. 3) Don't rush to downsize. Remember the SIM recommends a 1.0:1 wing loading as the MAXIMUM for A & B licenses. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  22. Yeah but your replies are to short for anyone to confuse you True, true. But if you add up my infrequent long posts, and his short but constant post-whoring, I'll bet you get the exact same amount of content... Plus my boobies are better than his (and so is my rig, cause it's purple!)... matter resolved Need to see your boobies to be sure, but your probably right on the rest of it. 23. Plan ahead. From opening read what people are doing. At 3k you can start to get an idea of where people are and if they are on smaller canopies than you. For the most part you can hang back in brakes and let the chaos subside. If the spot is good enough use the time to fly out and away from jump run to give you separation while everyone else gets down and then come in behind everyone. Land further out or in the alternate landing area. Try and use the time up high as effectively as possible so that your final approach is as stress free as possible. 24. How is this different than just renting? You would be jumpng a rig that you don't own and that you don't take home with you at the end of the day. You have to consider how many jumps you do, and what the cost of half a rig would be. Then add in half the cost of maintenance and repacks, and see how long you would need to own the rig to make it cheaper than renting. Then factor in that your 'partner' would have to want to keep their half of the rig for at least that amount of time, or you're stuck selling it or buying them out of the deal. You're better off just buying the least expensive used rig you can get your hands on (within reason). A freefly freindly container with 1000 jumps? Check. A PD reserve with 2 or 3 jumps on it? Check. Sabre 2 210 with 800 jumps and newer lines? Check. All of the above would be on the low end of the price scale, and wouldn't lose much value over the course of 2 years a 200 jumps. You could buy it for one price, and sell it for 90% of that when you're done. The AAD is one area where you'll lose value with use, but that's generally the way of the world. The AAD will provide a service, and you pay for it. The reason I see it as different to renting is simply availability. The 210's are in very high demand and there can be 4 or 5 people competing for access. Add to this students get priority for rental rigs so it can be difficult. I am also finding that trying to dial in canopy flight, it is useful to have the same canopy. Not to be switching between a brand new 210, a ragged out 210 or 230's. I wasn't considering new equipment by the way that would be silly when cash outlaw is the concern. I will be keeping my eyes open for a low cost rig, now that I am certain of what I want , and will consider buying it as parts as that helps spreading the cash over a period.
