  1. >I would very much recomend visiting Norway. There are some spectacular >places to jump Amen to that!
  2. >That's EXACTLY what they did at my DZ. Every one of them is curling over (...) We're having that same problem, except that ours are bent all the way back to the ground. These are thin, solid children's flotation devices approx 7.5cm(3 inches) across. Guess they weren't designed to stand in the sun for the whole summer... We used to have something different; it was the stuff that is used to insulate pipes in construction work(I don't know what it's called in finnish, and much less in english...). They lasted much longer, but the drawback is that it only comes in gray. I'm thinking of getting more of that stuff and some brightly colored self-adhesive tape! Erno
  3. I have no idea if this is anywhere near how the pro's do it, but this is how I'd do it: The shirt/jacket/whatever of course needs to be rigged in advance. I'd design something like the Birdman cutaway system. Handles colored the same as the jacket. When the time to deploy comes, just pull the handles and the jacket falls apart and is blown away. And before anyone goes out and starts to make something like I just described, please go and ask the professionals. Erno
  4. >I heard of people changing their emergency routine after > 500 jumps from two hands on each handle cut and pull, >to right hand cutaway left hand pull silver. When they have >to cut away, they automaticly do the original routine that >they've practised so many more times. I switched to "one hand on each handle"- emergency procedures at about 400 jumps. I had my first cutaway at about 550ish jumps, and did use my new procedures. I had both handles with me when I landed. The point is: it's not enough just to decide "oh well if I have to cutaway I'll do it with one hand on each handle", you have to practise it. I did. Pretty much on every ride to altitude(during the time I seem to be napping...), I go through the jump in my mind. The exit, the jump itself, breakoff, deployment, emergency procedures. Erno
  5. It's not allowed in Finland either. The most important reason is that you have no way of knowing if there are aircraft under the clouds. This is especially important at my DZ, since we have a LOT of gliders operating from the same airfield. And, as it happens, the best thermals are right underneath clouds... Jumping through clouds here is just about as safe as russian roulette. Erno
  6. >.or "what a way to make a serious buck - he's got the system > figured out!". I couldn't decide between the two... Somehow this reminds of a bit in the Hitchhiker's Guide: There was this planet ("Nowwhat" as I recall) the only export-item of which was the fur of the nowhattian Boghog. The furs were ugly, they leaked, and they were generally so undesireable that nobody in their right minds would buy one. The only thing that allowed for the economy of the planet to survive was the fact that there was a great deal of people in the galaxy who were not in their right minds... I believe this to be a case quite similar to that. Erno
  7. >But, if you're going to get nitpicky, it really only does take >one person to lock a thread. I can certainly do it! Ha! Nitpicking is one of my favorite pastimes during boring days at work! The discussion topic was "How many people does take to get a thread locked?", not "How many people does it take to lock a thread?". hmm... Q: "How many moderators does it take to change a lightbulb?" No I don't have punchline for that yet... Erno

    Birds

    >Bikes doing high speed makes this sound that very much >resembles someone in freefall, like slow thunder rolling in >Doubt skydivers have been around long enough for birds > to develop a "skydiver evasive action" gene.... I think the main difference is that it's quiet up there. Near the ground(and roads of course) there is a continuous stream of cars and bikes, and the birds just can't react to all the sounds or they'd die of stress. On the other hand, a bird flying up there, in a nice, quiet environment, would literally be scared shitless when that telltale hum of a skydiver in freefall start to approach... And as I said before, I'm inclined to believe that a freefall collision with a bird would leave very little left of the bird. As far as I'm concerned, no one has yet collided with a bird in FF. Erno

    Birds

The main thing IMO is that birds _will_ hear you in freefall. Hell, we can hear people in freefall on the ground! And thats half a mile away! Then again, if you were to hit a deaf bird... Erno

    Birds

    >>So it has happened >> >I wouldn't be so sure. I have repaired many bird strikes on aircraft >and have never found one sticking through the leading edge(...) I'm not buying it either. I'd think that a bird hitting the visor of a full-face at 120 mph would go "splat", or just bounce off... Erno
  11. A friend of mine used to use a Suunto-watch in freefall. Then the display changed from Alti to Barometric pressure during freefall. He was wondering why the watch read over 900 meters and the ground was looking too big... Nothing happened though, a low opening, and he made it to the DZ with rear risers. Better use the stuff designed for skydiving. Erno
  12. >That kicks ass!!! Someone had WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY too >much time on their hands.. lol But maybe not as much as you'd think... Download Ascii-generator here Erno freefly.doc
  13. >*pointing, yelling in Homer-Simpson-as-big-man-on-campus >voice, "NERRRRRRD!!!"* Yeah, but since you know what he's talking about, aren't you admitting your own nerdiness? And thanks for the list, I don't think I would've bothered myself... Erno
  14. >Not if I had known what my TM had packed in the container. >Guess it was better than the laundry. Dear lord, there are more of them! There's a tandem canopy at my DZ in those exact colors! I thought it must've been temporary insanity of the Strong designer, but it seems more likely he's colorblind... Erno

    Haiku ;)

Aren't haikus supposed to be 5-7-5 ? Yours is 4-7-4...
  16. >See attached. That's my spinal column. Ouch. You know, that would have made a great addition to your "Getting into BASE"-article... Erno
  17. ~700:1 First 350 jumps or so on big F111-canopies, about 250 of the jumps on a TurboZX 145. My TurboZX(loaded @ 1.37) was briefly bag-locked and opened in a spinner. Erno
  18. >I am thinking of making my own frappe - any idea where >one could get a pattern for such a thing? You mean one of those silly leather hats some old-timers wear? I don't know where to find the patterns, but it should be easy enough to copy them from an existing frappe-hat. I hope you have access to a riggers loft: Sewing leather will require some serious sewing machines, I'd imagine one that is used for harness work might do the trick. Erno
  19. I haven't tried these since I'm the only one using my computers, but they could work: Option one: Download and install Netscape Navigator(www.netscape.com) As I recall, Netscape has a built in user-account manager. Option two: Download and install Opera (www.opera.com) and follow the instructions at: http://www.opera.com/support/supsearch/supsearch.cgi?index=438 This way you would have separate user accounts, which hopefully will keep separate cookies as well. 20. >-Don't make your closing loop too tight. Is this really something to worry about? I've been told that if you can close the container without tools, the loop isn't too tight. I'd be more worried about too loose closing-loops, inviting a horse-shoe for a visit.... Erno
  21. >Who hasn't tried yelling what to do to a teammate with a brainlock Well yeah, things like "NO! not there! WHAT are you doing?? No you STUPID $/&#¤"... Or to myself (aloud) "FUCK! NO! GODDAMNIT!" or just the plain old pissed-off "AAAARRGGGHHH" after funneling a formation... I don't think I would like to hear what my team-mates have to say... Erno

  23. August 1998. I was staying at my mother's summerhouse, and went to to local store to buy some food. I saw an innocent looking ad on the notice-board, which of course advertised FJCs. The DZ was only 5km from my mom's house. I looked at it, took a phone-number slip, and went back to the summerhouse. -"Mom, can I have 300€ so I can go skydiving?" -"Umm, yeah, sure. You're going to have help around here for the money though." -"Ok sure no problem." Some time later I found myself hanging from the strut of a Cessna, looking at my JM. She nods at me, I let go, and immediately think "Why the hell did I let go of the plane?"
  24. Animation Shop 3 does it quite easily. It comes with Paint Shop Pro 7. Erno
