  1. Like the "assault weapons" ban? I think that the above statement, minus the "single", applies in both directions: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. I've got no formal education on this topic. But what I understand is that "more efficient" can mean two things: higher lift _or_ lower drag. In general, a BASE flight would be better with higher lift (i.e. loses less altitude) and more drag (i.e. moves forward slower). Or so goes the conventional wisdom. Personally, I don't see why you can't have a high lift _and_ low drag airfoil that just has properly set deep brakes, so you can choose when to use each characteristic of the wing (by deciding when to pop the toggles). As I said, I have no formal education on this topic, so I could be way off the mark. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. In Norway, using (I believe) Phoenix Fly pants. For reference, this flight goes further than an S1 flight I made from the same exit last year. Of course, these jumpers have _much_ better tracking skills than I do, but you get the idea. Video Here. I'll upload to Skydivingmovies.com also, but I'm sure my little page will be /. well before that happens. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. This was, without a doubt, the funniest shit I've ever been pointed at from this forum. And I'm a conservative. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. What he said. It was an honor to meet some of the pioneers. Thanks for coming, and thanks to Jason for making it all possible. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Wouldn't it be more efficient to just arm the Scots and send them down to take care of the problem? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. Not that I know of. A BASE canopy actually doesn't need to be a particularly efficient airfoil. The important characteristics there are openings and landings. In terms of flight profile it's actually generally more desirable to have a high drag and high lift wing, so that it flies slowly, but doesn't eat much altitude. At least, so goes the conventional wisdom. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Does anyone know why the winglets are placed a tad inboard, rather than right at the outside edge? Stiffness of canopy? Or is there an aerodynamic reason you'd do that on a stiff wing as well? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. Do you think there would be additional benefits to using multiple winglets at intervals across the topskin? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. Yep. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. Perhaps not the canopy, but what about the leading edge of a wingsuit? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. The value of the the letter to other jumpers, in a court of law, can not be overstated. You might have a slightly different perspective, but a lawsuit filed by family can be mostly defused by such a letter. And in at least one case in the US, and another in Europe, such a lawsuit has been a major problem for continuing site access. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. When I asked Robert on Thursday, he said "2 or 3 weeks". He didn't yet have a firm date, but it sounded like they are very near to taking orders. I can't wait! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Cave base jump

What I meant was that Atair/Morpheus would become the second manufacturer to offer multiple canopies for specialized applications (with Apex being the first, with the Rock Dragon and Dagger). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Cave base jump

This canopy was designed by Stane specifically for certain parameters we needed. It definitely was not a "New Troll Prototype". It was a Hi-lift, lowspeed, low glide ratio piece of art. Nothing like a Troll. Stane also had a new prototype/changed Troll at Bridge Day (notably it had a center cell bottom skin inlet valve). Very interesting stuff he's doing there. I suspect it may not be long until Atair joins Apex with multiple specialized airfoils selling for different jumps. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Cave base jump

Me too. I must hassle Stane some more to let me try it... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Cave base jump

Does anyone know if that was a riser or toggle turn? Space? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. I have removed everything from the unfortunate "bite me" on down. Let's keep the biting in the bedroom, and out of the forums, please. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. Let me add my emphasis to what several people have said: Do not take a slider down parachute out of an aircraft. The relative wind speed at exit is already too great for a slider down opening. You will almost certainly be injured, or hurt your canopy, if you try this. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. Have you compared with large mesh and tailgate? I'd bet that the slower inflation you saw was due to using a small mesh slider at 4-5 seconds, rather than the tailgate. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. I have video of an experienced jumper getting a slider down tailgated lineover. I'll try to post it sometime and start a discussion about that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. I don't know about that specific jump, but timing lights is pretty standard in urban BASE. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. Very smart idea. I was wondering if you should have done that over Labor Day. You look awfully funny when you turn blue. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. Here is a short piece I wrote on this topic a while ago. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. As with all thins, it depends. It depends on the object, and it mostly depends on who the jumpers are. I generally make the same "have a good one" type comments at exit. I usually don't say either the "be safe" or the "don't die" stuff. But I have, at various times said things along both of those lines. It just depends on the vibe of the particular load. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
