  1. Ok, when a guy with a Ph.D. in physics starts looking for references, I think we're officially out of the depth of the average BASE jumper. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. It probably depends on the actual location of the cliff. I believe that NZ has followed the US and Australia in outlawing BASE in national parks. But there are plenty of cliffs in those countries that are not in national parks. If you want a more specific answer, I'd recommend looking here for people who might know more specifics about NZ. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Several studies, including one commissioned by the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology, have concluded that the measures Edwards urged (and most have adopted to avoid lawsuits) have either zero or negative effect on outcomes. What's your definition of "frivolous"? Because demanding that some piece of technology that has no added benefit be used regularly sounds pretty frivolous to me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. Have you studied the origins and initial spread of Islam? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. I wasn't lumping anyone. I was commenting specifically on one particular trial lawyer: John Edwards. He's not only in the "bad" group--he's pretty much the single worst, all by himself. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There have been numerous accidents at legal sites, when folks who were unqualified attempted to jump them. Just because they are legal doesn't mean they are safe. There have been real accidents at popular legal BASE sites because someone with no training was able to acquire gear (often the wrong kind of gear) and find an exit. From my Naming Names article: It is my opinion that the best way to visit a new (to you) BASE site is in the company of the locals. The idea is not to keep jumpers from visiting. It is to encourage them to call the locals first. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. Have you read the New York Times Article about Edwards? (login is "dropzone" password is "dropzone") I've also bumped a previous thread discussing Edward's career. Perhaps you'd like to comment? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Bump for Kallend. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. I know that this data was measured for the Ace/BJ airfoil at one point, in a variety of sizes and loads. I used to have it somewhere on my computer, but I've changed machines twice since then. Let me see if I can dig it up. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. I'm fairly educated on the tax code. In my opinion, the current tax system is worst for the upper middle class (who get nailed by the "penalize the rich" measures), and best for the very wealthy (who can afford the lawyers, accountants and tax shelters to get off paying a microscopic portion of their true income in taxes). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. I'm an atheist. However, I am interested in religion, and have done some study of both Christianity and Islam. I think this is a central point that many miss. Christianity, in it's underlying teachings, is a religion of peace. Jesus preached against war, violence, etc. Islam, in it's underlying teachings, is a religion of conquest. Mohammed was a conqueror and ruler. He taught his followers to subjugate other people by force to bring them into his empire. In many ways, Islam behaved, in it's development, more as an empire than a religion. Both religions have gone through various phases in which they have been imperialistic/pacifist/everything else. But in the underlying philosophies, there is a clear dichotomy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. Sounds like positive news to me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. Your analogy would only be accurate if Sandy had filed lawsuits which forced gear manufacturers to make their gear an order of magnitude more expensive (so, reserves now cost around $8,000), but no safer. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Well, it was kind of fun while it lasted. I'm going to edit out the area name, as I see that there are plenty of folks reading this who probably ought to be guided there during the boogie. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. On towers where an average jumper takes 10, I've seen pumpkins impact around 18-20. So I voted "slower than belly." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. Abortion is legal, so that's like saying that glasses are important to keep legal for those who want to wear glasses. Are you saying that keeping abortion legal is _not_ important to those who might desire to have one? I beg to differ. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. This promises to be the best wingsuit to date. And more than likely, my next gear purchase. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. Um, I was thinking more of homosexuals, and those who wish to have abortions. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. I saw a flippers and snorkel jump from a 3300' cliff a while back. The flippers gave good forward speed, but he kept going head low and having to recover. Kind of a "porpoise" effect. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. I think that many people consider abortion and gay rights to be _real_ issues. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I heard that there is a bad spotting disease going around that area... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. Edwards couldn't seem to put aside his avarice and realize that lives were at stake. Lining his own pockets was way too important for considerations like that. I don't think doctors ought to refuse to treat his wife because of the (incredibly poor) way he treated them, though. I think they ought to refuse to see his wife at all, out of fear that doing so might expose them to being a target for Mr. Edward's law suits. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. Please read the Before you Post! link at the top of this forum. I've edited your post to remove site names. The Italian terminal wall has a fairly large landing area. The French walls you mention mostly have poor landing areas, but there are other walls in France with better landings. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. I believe most of the jumping in Norway during the winter is off other objects. I'd recommend contacting the locals. What part of Norway will you be in? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. Actually, I am just lucky enough to have had the author email me when it hit publication. I had asked him about an English version some time ago, and he had promised to let me know when it came out. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
