If I was a doctor, I wouldn't get near that woman with a 100' pole. After all the doctors her husband has sued into bankruptcy? I'd be too afraid that he'd sue me, no matter how good a job I did. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

In addition to what 434 said: I don't really view the two as competing, so much as complementing each other. If you can, I'd recommend going to Idaho, and learning there so that you have exits and such nailed solid, then going to Norway to work on the tracking and other high airspeed skills you won't develop here. A cliff (any cliff) is far more dangerous than the potato bridge. Statistics bear this out, even for first jump students who receive excellent instruction. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Not to continue replaying this saga too many times, but if you have a look at this BLiNC thread, you can read my thoughts on the Odyssey FX. My review of the container is here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

To echo what Jay said: BASE is a sport where you _must_ know everything inside out, upside down and backward. You need to do the homework before you start chucking yourself off of things. Failure to do so will result in harsh consequences, sooner or later. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I pretty much totally agree with everything Jay said. When I started flying wingsuits, I had a harness for my GPS built, and used it to measure my glide angles. I wanted to be sure I could outfly the talus on a specific cliff before I went and tried it. If you have the money, a GPS is, in my opinion, a much better tool for measuring efficiency of flight than a pro-track. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I agree that pin rigs are absolutely the way to go for low freefalls and non-delays. There are several "non-scientific" methods that work fairly well, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I think this is the first time BASE 66 has been available in English. I've just ordered a copy. I'll try to post a review once I read it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

That's ok. There's a very similar thread, with almost identical posts from basebasebase, over in the BASE forum. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Are you just looking at new gear? Or are you also considering used gear (in which case you'll need to include things that are no longer produced in the poll)? I'd be clear if your talking about Vertex and Prism 1 or 2, because the containers are significantly different. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

How is it sturdier? Is it stiffer? A stiffer material ought to flap less, and hence experience less drag and more efficient flight. It's like those sails you see that are practically made of a sheet of plastic. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It was originally on there, but since the company, Gravity Sports, was dissolved I took it off. Are they doing anything else? Not that I know of. But plenty of used containers are still floating around out there. And you did include the Neo, which is also no longer being produced, to the best of my knowledge. Also, you might want to split Perigee's into P-Pro and P-II, since there is a huge difference between the velcro and pin rigs (and, personally, I don't particularly like the P-II, but I do like the P-Pro for some things). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

My choices didn't make the poll. Soft Cock. Or Vision, if you can find one. I guess I'll vote for choice 2. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Opinions about all the new blood getting into BASE
TomAiello replied to SwoopnHuck's topic in Archive
I'm pretty sure he meant that this is just a random internet discussion, and no one ought to get to worked up or angry about it. I took his post as directed at everyone posting in the thread. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
I use this reasoning whenever I try to explain "why BASE?" We BASE jump for the same reasons that anyone does anything--because we want to. Some people bowl, some ride motorcycles, some fish, some write novels. Every one of these people is doing so because it is something they have chosen to do. It turns out that BASE jumpers are just the people who have chosen to do this. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I jumped in a t-shirt on Monday. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

What's the point of posting a one liner directed at another poster in this forum, with no discussion of the issues? Play the ball, not the player, please. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Most people in Idaho think of the Twin Falls area as "Northern Utah". I think it has something to do with the heavy Mormon influence. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Or Idaho, where I live. We even had a US Senate seat go to the republican unopposed. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I voted for Badnarik. He's apparently on the ballot in Idaho, but not on the ballot in Speaker's Corner. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Tom M. and I decided that the pattern appears to be Bryan Stokes. When he's in town, the weather falls apart. As soon as he leaves, things clear up. By the way, Bryan, the weather on Sunday morning was very nice. I think the bad stuff followed you up to Boise when you left to go skydiving. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I forgot about the cookies! They were great. And the tacos...I've had them! Yum! I'm getting hungry. I wonder if this could be my new pitch. "This first jump course will include a meal cooked by legendary chef Tom Aiello..." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

You already did thank me. Several years ago--it involved a wingsuit, remember? We each give what we can to who we can. That's how this whole thing works, I think. Glad you had a good experience. Would you believe it cleared up on Monday, and has been beautiful ever since? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

My two barometers of who is the best BASE jumper: 1) How much have you gotten from the sport (be it happiness, experiences, spiritual calm, etc)? 2) How much have you given back to the sport? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Honestly, until about a year ago, I'd never even been to a football game. Then I got married. My wife is a HUGE Bulldog fan (she was a trainer for the UGA football team as an undergrad), to the point that the neighbors (in Idaho, where this is not taken as normal) look at us funny because of the giant 'G' on her (red) car, and the 'G' flag flying at our house. She pretty much thinks the best thing about moving to Idaho was the fact that "UGADAWG" was not taken for a car tag (don't even think of trying to get that tag in Georgia, where she's from, or Alabama, where we lived before this). It should be a good game, though. And hey, if Georgia doesn't win, I'll be pulling for Auburn to win the National Championship after that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
