Why not try something else and see if you like it? There are lots of options in the latest and coolest. On the other hand, if you're not too worried about the canopy, and think (I'd tend to agree) that the jumper makes a much larger difference than the parachute, why not just grab something cheap and used? I doubt that one opening was the canopy. It could have been a lot of different things (my first guess is wind at opening), and the canopy itself is just about last on that list. I've heard reports of strange openings, but no more than the reports for any other canopy. There are always rumors that this/that/the other canopy opens poorly, but as far as I can tell the Flik has no more or less of them than any other canopy. Not entirely, but in general I'd agree with you. User skill has a lot more to do with this whole thing than gear used. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Does anyone know what foot patrol implies? I.E. Was she walking through the meadow or on one of the trails? Or was she hiding in the meadow (sneaky fuckers) ? Just curious... It's actually my third hand impression that a climbing ranger on the wall had radioed in before the jumpers had even landed. "Foot Patrol" just means hanging out, walking around. Usually it's about keeping the kids from smoking pot in the meadow, the drunks from being too rowdy, and giving Aunt Ethel directions to Curry Village. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Ah, yes. You are, of course, correct. Having been turned down for something like 50 permits now (my letter writing campaign doesn't seem to have had any recognizable effect, though), I know that well. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Did you try calling BR? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

As far as I know, it's all held in an evidence room somewhere. Apparently Brenda McGlynn once got access to the evidence room (legally--some story about being the manufacturer [which, in fairness, she was] and needing to check for stolen gear) and reported that there were rigs that had been locked in there since the 80's. Hmmm. If my gear were stolen by a young, foolish jumper and taken to NPS land and confiscated, would I have a legal right to it's return (assuming that I had reported it stolen in advance)? Food for thought... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

On the plus side, I've heard a rumor that they'll get the camera and video back (once copies have been made for the evidence locker). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

BASE is illegal in all National Parks in the US. This includes Yosemite (as well as most of the other terminal cliffs in the states). Chad, Katie, I know we talked about this before and after. I feel for you guys. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. There's spare gear sitting in my basement if you need some. Everyone else, Let's be sensitive to the fact that these two jumpers are regular posters here, and our friends. I'm sure there is still some soreness over this. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Easy (i.e. a bit of delay before you must fly) BASE exits are easier to manage with the leg wing collapsed by bending the knees (rather than bringing the legs together). This allows you to still spread apart to kill rotation in that axis, but without allowing inflation of the leg wing. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There are a couple campgrounds. Check here. I'm not sure if you can camp anywhere in watching distance, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you sewed a tail pocket onto the outside of the bag, that ought to work pretty well and eliminate any rubber band worries. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I usually zip up before climbing out of the structure. The larger the A, in general, the larger the holes in the structure. So if you're doing a wingsuit A, climbing though usually isn't too bad. You just kind of wriggle and pop through. Now, _climbing_ the tower wearing the wingsuit would suck. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I have video of it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Although those were impressive, I still think the most amazing jump I've personally seen was DW flying a wingsuit between the guy wires of an antenna. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Yuri posted this in the "High A" thread. This is very important information, and, in my experience, the vast majority of jumpers do not understand it. I've reproduced it here, and I'll sticky it to the top of the board for a few days. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Hey, Check out Paralpinism.com. It's a new jumping organization being started in Europe, by folks interested in jumping cliffs, and in jumping as a way of experiencing nature. It appears they are organizing a way into their national climbing organizations, which has good possibilities for site access and preservation, as well as opening up broader resources for things like rescue insurance. Surf over and check it out. I've linked the english version, but there's french too, if you've got the language skills, and the french probably gives a better flavor. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

There was an incident several years ago in which someone had an accidental 3 ring disconnect. To my knowledge, nothing was ever found to be wrong with the gear, and no cause was ever found. There's a thread on BLiNC somewhere about it. At any rate, in the wake of that, a number of people ordered rigs with non-3 ring risers. I think BR always had that option, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Then all those copies shouldn't be banned, as they aren't "real" assault weapons. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Lots of us talked about that last year while riding that thing. Looks like scary fun, but the logistics are going to be rough-to-near-impossible. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

If you have good references, you can pretty much call up Vertigo and get invited. I don't think they're interested in excluding people. They just want to reduce the possibility of accidents at the event. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Wow. Care to elaborate on that? Personally, I'd prefer we let anyone in who wants to come. Land of opportunity and all that. I'd also prefer that we not give handouts to anyone--recently arrived or born here. That's my money (and yours) that the government is so free with. Heck, I'd be giving a bunch away too, if it wasn't mine. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Honestly, I'll probably vote for Badnarik, if that's an option here. But that's only because it won't matter much--Idaho is an overwhelmingly Republican place. If the race was close, and I thought my vote might matter, I'd vote for Bush. Pragmatism sometimes yields strategic voting, which isn't so much voting "against" my beliefs, as voting in the manner most likely to advance my beliefs in the long run. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
