Ever catch something during a pin check?
goose491 replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
I caught a reserve pin with only millimeters to freeing itself from the loop. The tip of it had already been pulled past the edge of the grommet. It gave me quite a chill when I opened the flap. I pushed it back in. The student jumper who asked me for the check looked very very nervous about the jump he was doing and so I contemplated not telling him until we got down. I told him about it anyway. He said he had checked them both on the ground already. If that's so, and it moved sometime during the climb, I suppose it's something that could not have been caught on the ground by the jumper. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Stuttering is not "Bad-behaviour"... but stealing is. Having a high IQ is not "Good-behaviour"... but not taking things that don't belong to you is. I agree that one should sympathise a little if someone has a disorder. But we are all too sensitive a people these days. The guy's a theif and his actions should not be met with an "understanding" pat on the back. I'm glad he's going to the can... klepto or not. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Yo Bytch! I unfortunately know all too well what you speak of. I have found that the best way to avoid this, is to apply one of the work rules originally coined by George Kastanza. That is to always seem irate and snippy. You see, George does nothing at his jobs. He prides himself on being able to collect as much pay as possible whilst putting forward the least amount of effort possible. He discovered that when hard working people are really busy, they look somewhat irate, or irritable. They are snippy with you if you require their attention. Of course, one could argue that this "look" is but a display of concentration on the task at hand, and the "snippiness" but a desire to continue what they are doing... but not knowing what it means to concentrate on a task at hand, George mistakes it for general tetchiness. He begins acting as though he's gotten up on the wrong side of the bed everyday, and claiming he's got no time to speak with anyone when they need him... the result? His employer commending him on working so hard and being so very dedicated! Now I do not advocate lazyness... but this can be applied by efficient or "competent" workers as well. Here comes your boss, worried he might be comming to dump some extra work on your desk? Think about wearing a hair shirt. How uncomfortable! How itchy and painful even at times. "Man! Who the hell invented these GodAweful, pain in the ass shirts anyway? One just can't find peace!" ... that's what I do, and my boss cruises right by me with a pat on the back and a "Nice Job man, you're always working so hard!" One-man downplane landing on Fort Bragg
goose491 replied to SkymonkeyONE's topic in Safety and Training
(emphasis mine) Tricky tricky!! You have answered your own question... what do you think? Sounds like an attempt at monkey-proofing. It's not an SOS system (which would entail one handle for cutaway and reserve deployment alike), I don't think I've ever seen such a device. Can you describe this cable... what did it look like and where was it routed on the rig? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Canopy Malfunction: Two Canopies Out, Biplane (with photos)
goose491 replied to SudsyFist's topic in Safety and Training
I believe what you have typed is the 'correct' proceedure. Leave all breaks stowed and steer with small inputs to the rear-risers of the dominant canopy. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Not wanting to go to terminal before reserve deployment is a valid thought. I guess it has to be weighed against the perils of 'hanging around' under said reserve, "Freezing with tired arms" One thing that caught my attention when I asked Jeth did she contemplate freefalling a bit more (having forgotten she mentioned an RSL), was that the thought of disconnecting the RSL didn't even come to mind. An RSL is very much like an AAD in that it is a backup, intended for when things go very wrong and it is not to be relied upon... But it's very different from an AAD in that it cannot be a "set it and forget it" piece of equipment. I can think of two scenarios where it would be downright crutial to have the presence of mind to disconect the RSL: 1) Exact same situation, but on a High Altitude jump 2) A canopy wrap situation I'm definately not critisising here, but I'd of been happier to hear: "I decided against disconecting the RSL as I didn't want to take my reserve terminal." then: "The thought never crossed my mind." You provide very insightful post, I just add that a connected RSL should be considered when you chop. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Slider Collapse Line Caught Between Fingers on Final
goose491 replied to Lostinspace's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I can see a fast moving slider disloging a toggle if it got the chance. Thanks for the input. -
That's sorta the impression I got. Even if the 80mph down is correct, a mal that has you spinning like crazy has the potential of saving you from a lot of trauma by 'skipping' you off the earths surface rather then pounding you straight in. A reason why swoopers might burry ONE toggle is they KNOW beyond reasonable doubt that they aren't getting out of the corner and will be going in hard... providing they have the time to think of it. Not to downplay the sensasionalism of surviving a double mal mind-you . I bet that guy bought himself a whack of lotery tickets that week! My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Slider Collapse Line Caught Between Fingers on Final
goose491 replied to Lostinspace's topic in Safety and Training
Oh, I see I had misunderstood... I don't know of any reason somebody would want something like that. Why would you not want your slider coming down over the links? Anyone? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Right, right... forgot you had mentioned the RSL. ... something to consider I guess. Especially if something like this were to occur on a High-Altitude jump? I'm going to mention this in the RSL debate thread going on right now, might as well add the food for thought. Well, Thanks for the input and again, good job. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Slider Collapse Line Caught Between Fingers on Final
goose491 replied to Lostinspace's topic in Safety and Training
That sounds pretty hairy. How is it that you didn't notice it before landing? Anyway, I'm glad you made it out alright. With the slinks, you shouldn't need those 'bumbers'. They are there solely to prevent the HardLinks from damging the gromets in the slider when it comes down on them. (A little nick in the slider gromet can shred your lines.) That being said, the slider should still fit over them. I was collapsing my slider and pulling it down over the bumbers long before I had slinks installed. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!! -
Well! Congratulations big time! That's a pretty hairy experience for a first chop (beer!)... and at 57 jumps too? You did fantastic! Thanks for sharing it with us. You write it up very well and I was able to follow you as though it were me. A couple things: You mentioned that you didn't want to get a Pin Check for fear that the noob behind you would mess up you flaps. This makes perfect sense but then you go on to say that it's easy for you to check your flaps on that gear. (??) You could have had him check your pin, and then made sure your flap was closed properly. Many check their own pins, I have figured out how to do it and you can too. I still have someone else check mine 99.9% of the time though. You may want to ensure your gear is freefly friendly. All kit should be these days really. Velcro is a thing of the past. No critisisme here now, I am just wondering... after clearing the main, did you consider freefalling a bit more before pulling silver? What ran through your head the moment the main was gone and you were free again? Again, wonderful job and I'm glad I got to read it from you

All the best Kel. I'm thinking of you while you look for other work (hopefully not too soon though ) ... enjoy the boogie! Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Hey, you'll meet a lot of cool people in this sport... and the sense of community and belonging is overwhelming... but it's not a team sport. That is, we all progress at different paces, in different aspects of the sport. NEVER gauge how well you are doing by comparing to another jumper and NEVER think you're just not going to "get it". You'll get your head around the ground school stuff, don't fret it really. And the more exposure you have to the sport, the more that stuff will make sense to you. Really, just try to keep having as much fun as you can, while staying safe, and you'll be on the right track Hey! BTW, your avatar picture... is that in San Juan, Puerto Rico? Of the 5 people that came with me to do our first jump, 2 continued on with me, doing a few more before dropping off. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one from my FJC still jumping. (it was S/L progression) I have seen one experienced jumper sell his gear and opt out and that was last year. He has his reasons. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

It's not just you. That is an Extremely stupid thing to tell a new jumper . If there is even a remote chance of instability in the roll, you will increase your chances of entanglement.... around the reserve or around your neck! That's nothing I have ever thought about though... **with enough altitude** I might just try it if/when the opportunity (read: Hopefully not) ever arises. My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Now the real question about your near-miss with another plane is: Did you use both hands on one side of the yoke... or one hand on each? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Windsor you did the right thing. Any fligth instructor worth their salt is going to teach you that a collision avoidance turn is to the right... but not to let that mess you out of taking the obvious best course to avoid collision. You likely had half-completed the turn before realising it... glad you didn't stop it and turn the other way realising: "Hey! I'm avoiding a collision! I should be turning right!" In any case, I'm glad to have heare of it from you and not the news Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

College Football forces out victims for tourists
goose491 replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Is that question directed at me? Because I don't feel it's even questionable. However, the motels are there... built on money spent by patrons... no patrons, no motels. "You may have shelter here tonight.... but it belongs to someone else tomorow." Should not be met with "Asshole! I don't have a house!" Let's not forget that there was no obligation to house the refugees in the first place. Now don't get me wrong. I do think it's a crime. But the football fans should have considered it, the football league, the fucking football players should have considered it. The hotel/motels have their hands tied by the law I'm afraid. The rooms were spoken for and they were offered up as long as they were vacant. Unfuckingbelievable that this hotshot writer has us upset with the hotels... when in reality, it should be all those involved with bringing and playing a football game (with all it's needs and expenses) to this area in need of roofs, food and money, that should take the flogging. Perhaps not: "chose to stay during a Hurricane"... but perhaps "chose to stay (read: live) in a place that could easily be devastated by a hurricane any given year knowing that in the event of one..... ...does that suit you better? My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!

Not sure when there was, if there was, or how there was "God" ...but what I said was that Dinos lived before the New Testament. As the story goes, The new testament is what declared that "God" would no longer punish the evil directly, but that we would all have the responsibility squarely on our own shoulders. Before this time, we were not yet 'mature' enough as his children. "Jesus" dies to give us a clean slate, then it's all up to us from there. The machine that is, however, chugs along and does it's thing.. wreaking havok... as we do. And come come, we didn't just come out of the dark-ages last week my friend. We've been able to hear-tell of natural disasters occurring all over the planet for a long time now... and we can read the earth today, to see what has happened yesterday. My theory is proven only by proof... which would of course require us all to act the way we are supposed to. But the theory stands, the day we all truly treat eachother as we wish to be treated, will be the day we no longer fear anything at all. Not "Natural" disasters, not disease, not pain nor suffering.
