Daughter has a pierced tongue....Where did I go wrong?
jerm replied to steve1's topic in The Bonfire
what's her #? Seriously though, was she presenting it in a way that seemed like she was trying to get your goat? If so then it sounds like rebellion, if not, sounds like she thinks her dad is pretty cool and wanted to share this with him.... treasure that.. my sister hid yer tongue ring and tattoos from her dad for years.... take solace in knowing that you have a good enough relationship with your daughter that she was able to come to you with this... even if she's being rebellious what college is that, again? keep 'em.... take it from someone who lost one of his custom painted Chucks at 2500 ft on a hard opening after the shoe came untied in freefall... *sigh* watched the thing tumble 2495 ft into a remote field with 5ft high weeds, pickers & lots of trees. plus, then the currect pair gets worn out, you've got a brand new pair w/o having to go shopping! well it takes more time/energy to move that larger mass. As such a 120 may be titchier for you than for someone who is leading it more heavily, because the canopy has to do more in order to move their big ass. the problem becomes one of how much input you need to put in for how much of a response... a small canopy generally requires less input to get things done than a larger canopy. THis can be a lot of fun up in the air, but can be a real problem when it comes to landing, when just i slight unevenness in your flare may send you tumbling or worse. Small changes in the air (gusts, turbulence) will require more corrections than on a larger canopy, and overcorrecting on a small canopy can have disastrous results, even at a low loading. The short version that many have already said is that there's a lot more to it than just simple wingloading. Work your way down in size just like everyone else... don't play a "numbers game" trying to get to the "proper" wingloading. The proper wingloading for you is what you're safe flying, not some number generally based one people of different sizes and shapes. looking for jumper from SKYDIVE ORANGE
jerm replied to jerm's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
yes... orange, va.. not orange, ma :) Can't remember this jumper's name.. he was in Zhills with the crew around new year's... years a bandanna a lot, skinny guy, i think he said he busted up his pelvis on a landing gone bad, has some hardware...... ANYWAY.... in a drunken stupor i lent him my LeatherMan tool for opening of alcohol and by the time i remembered this (the next morning) they had cleared camp and gone. If anyone knows this jumper, how i can get in contact with him, etc... please let me know... if i wasn't laid off i'd just buy a new one, but alas.... thanks all! [replyI don't speak German well enough to know what "so es macht nichts aus". Please expound in English. [/replyI So "It doesn't matter" throw more than wind drift, but yes, so long as proper separation is given, it's all good. The point is that vRW out first generally makes proper separation harder to attain. yes, my fault, i fscked up my then & than... BUT you still put freefliers out first, which i still take issue with. Personally i think most "freefliers out first" arguments are dodgy, but yours wasn't what i thought it was, so es macht nichts aus. What not to do (how the Aggie almost died)
jerm replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The only way to guarantee that your parachute won't malfunction is not to use it. I've posted this before, but i think it bears repeating: "You're taking a big ball of nylon fabric and a bunch of string, tossing it out into 120MPH worth of wind, and expect it to do the same thing every time? What are you smoking? You can be as meticulous and careful as you like while packing, and sometimes shit just happens." no, really they shouldn't. Did you really just assert that the higher-opening groups should get out ahead of the lower-opening group? Of all the arguments i've ever heard for FF out first, that's gotta be a dodgiest. Sure, they open at 5 and are generally relatively lightly loaded, they can get back from very long spots if they're upwind, but not necessarily so if downwind. They also tend to slide around in FF.... lots of movement + opening high is not a combination i want out ahead of me. The only place i've seen this done differently is WFFC but they tandems use a different landing area than the majority of upjumpers and are given a LONG delay. hmmm... buddy of mine pounded in the last year at Quincy on a swoop-gone-bad, got messed up pretty bad. Another buddy of his was wearing at least one piece of his gear (helmet that i know of... maybe rig) the next season when he smacked in.. both ended up with broken backs and then some.. correct... the lead canopy in a biplane is the dominant one AFAIK
-
goddamnit cajones, you just HAD to mention those 2 names.... now you've got me considering an upgrade and a conversion to Intel (from AMD)... and man, i can't afford that... i've got jumpin to do!! Once you get past the opening, things are much more predictable.... if they get out & into a stable bilpane you're basically ok so long as you're gentle with them & only steer the dominant canopy. remember you've basically then got double (or better) the square footage over your head... makes for a slow descent, and i've seen people stand up a no-flare biplane on student gear. -jerm Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time

Guys... nice job. A very nice Job indeed. Audio can be a bitch to decide on and match up match up when you're doing it from the beginning ("ok.. what would go well here? DOH! that clip is 1.5 sec too long and it looks dumb!!!"). I though the audio worked out quite well and Stu, great storytelling/editing. Keep it up. Well, yes and no. The software CAN run on 2 procs, not it won't do it by itself. Install the software and set it up, get it running. Then make a copy of the install directory called like folding2 or somesuch. go into the new directory and open the client.cfg file in your favorite text editor (so long as it saves actualy text), and look for the line: machineid=1 Change the 1 to a 2, save and start up the second one by running the exe from the directory. You should now have soemthing close to max load on both procs. It;s worth noting that there's a console-only version of the program on the site, and that may be happier running as the second process. I'm running on about 2 hrs of sleep, and i can't quite remember EXACTLY what i did, but i have this running on a few boxen and it's working great.
