  1. Shin splints are related to weak muscles in the ankle or a tight achilles tendon. Shin splints in runners tend to be a transit sort of injury (common to newer runners but decreasing with some experience). If you have had them for 5 years I would be alarmed that either you a) are only treating the symptoms and not the underlying cause or b) have an undiagnosed stress fracture. Doing ankle raises with weights on the end of your feet are a very effective way to combat shin splints. edited for spelling and grammar. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  2. I'm not an attorney and am more than open to correction here. I have been involved in a number of high risk sports and have been on the other end of the risk management table as well (in skydiving the DZ, manufacturer side, but this was not connected to skydiving). My understand of the case law is that most courts will not enforce a waiver for gross negligence. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  3. I block all the friggin app updates. Annoying. I don't mind if people post status updates often but I hate the passive-aggressive status updates. Just talk to people if you have a problem with them, don't post about it on your facebook wall. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  4. I talked to my parents after about my 3rd jump. Told them I was a big boy and was accepting these risks and responsibilities for myself. If I go in, then that is all on me and I didn't want them ever considering suing anybody. Honestly it was a pretty easy conversation. My parents are not the "sue-happy" types in general (although I agree w/ NWFlyer that grief can do strange things to people). I have also participated in white water rafting, rock climbing, and other higher-risk activities in the past. My parents have also done a little bit of kayaking and white-water. I also talked to my kids. They are not old enough to initiate any sort of law-suit but I do want them to understand that it is a somewhat dangerous activity and I accept those risks as part of life. I did not dwell on it real long. Probably wouldn't hurt to periodically remind my loved ones of this conversation and even have an "open when I die" letter too. 5. Hope NWFlyer doesn't mind me reporting her words and starting a spin-off thread from the "AAD manufacturer sued" thread over in gear and rigging. I thought it was worthy of it's own thread. Anyway, here's what NWFLyer said over there: This thread should serve as an important reminder of why we have to have these conversations with our loved ones well before anything bad happens to us. I'd venture to guess that no one posting here knows Ms. Lipps, yet everyone is expressing anger and disdain. Yet we have no idea what kind of conversations her daughter had with her prior to her death. Grieving family members plus aggressive pursuit by lawyers looking for a case is a bad combination. It's incumbent on all of us who are involved in the sport to have the conversation, as many times as it takes, with the person or persons who are going to be making such decisions after our deaths. It might be your parents, spouse, children, siblings, etc. Whoever it is, make your wishes expressly known. Make the fact that you are fully accepting the risk known. Talk to them about how you manage risk, but never ever promise that "my AAD will save me, don't worry!" It's a lie. Your AAD may save you, but it may not. And there are a lot of other ways you can die in the sport that have nothing to do with a low/no pull. I've had the conversation with my parents. I've sent them an "open if I die" envelope that they have put in their safe deposit box. It's reiterated in there (there's a lot of other information, too, but that's in there). To do anything else is being irresponsible and setting your family up to be influenced by attorneys at their most vulnerable time. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  6. Qualify to run the Boston Marathon--probably only interesting to me but I want to see how hard I can push my body physically. My one (and so far only) attempt at a marathon I fell 5 seconds short. I have unfinished business. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  7. Financially: Maybe Emotionally: NO!!! Mine cost $50k to law firms. JerryBaumchen Hi Jerry, Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it!!!
  8. My total legal fees were under 25k, but they were a lot closer to 25k then they were to 3k. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  9. 3k? 3k in legal fees and you are complaining that is killing you? Shit 3k barely got me in the door. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  10. Why did you tell your wife that if you were already looking into AFF courses before your tandem? I don't want to be a dick but I think your wife would have plenty of reason to be pissed off. Anyway, balancing family and skydiving is a choice. People manage to do it all sorts of different ways but at least be honest with yourself and your wife about the risks and benefits involved. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  11. It doesn't matter. They can sign a million waivers and it doesn't prevent anybody from suing. It may prevent the suit from being successful, but the defendant is generally still out legal costs. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  12. I work in a community mental health facility. There are not strict laws in place to deem a person incompetent. Particularly here in VA, after the Cho hearing, the process is a joke that does not respect civil rights. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  13. reminds me of that joke, Instructor: what do you do if you pull the main chute and nothing happens? Student: Pull the reserve Instructor: What if nothing happens when you pull your reserve? Student: Track for my riggers's car. Maybe there's something to it. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  14. I had 12 friends come out and do tandems at the end of July. I have another one doing her first on Saturday. I don't feel I have talked anybody into it, but I am enthusiastic about my own skydiving. Before I allowed any of them to sign up I explicitly told them that there were risks involved and I wanted them to make sure that they were okay with taking those risks for themselves. I am very cautious not to try to talk somebody into it who is nervous or unenthusiastic. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  15. A little pussy never hurt anyone "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  16. I'm personally convinced this is not true for guys. The numbers are just too out of whack. A guy would be better off finding and meeting an adventurous lady somewhere else and then introducing her to skydiving. And then holding on for dear life! "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  17. It all depends on who is doing the defining. Mormons would certainly identify themselves as Christians. That is their definition. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  18. Different tools help different people. Some people can go cold turkey. I posted about my friend who used Chantix because it is still somewhat new. She said she had some freaky dreams but otherwise was okay w/ it. It worked for her. I work at a community mental health center and our psychiatrists will not prescribe it because our population is susceptible to psychosis anyway. Wellbutrin had absolutely no effect for another friend but if it works for you than it works for you. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  19. There's a difference between cooked and overcooked. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  20. When I opened this thread I thought it was going to be about socks. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  21. So why do the skydivers get away with it? "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  22. No idea what it was in DC but it could have been a paraglider. There are a few that fly in my town and my kids have mistaken it for a parachute more than once. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  23. A quick Google search revealed that the Circuit Court for DC ruled exactly the opposite on what looks to be a fairly similar case. http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2010/08/06-0 This one looks headed towards the Supreme Court. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  24. Hockey Hall of Fame. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
  25. I don't know that I buy Shah's original premise but there is a lot of literature about sexual frustration of various sorts leading to violence. China, due to its one child policy and sex selective abortion, has a rate of 113 live male births:100 live female births. The natural occurence is 105:100. China will have 20 million "extra" males within the next few years with little/no mating prospect. Could be a huge cause of societal instability or military adventurism.
