Or maybe he is worried that the AAD won't work if THE JUMPER is on fire? Seems just about as equally reasonable of a concern, or consideration to me! coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Hope, Hope, Hope, Hope, Hope..... How many ("varied") people are you already "listening" to? How much worry and pressure are you already putting on yourself? Here is all I will suggest (unfair "insider" perspective coming here, that won't make any sense to everyone else because I jump at the same DZ Cokie does and know common ppl)... DON'T listen to ANYONE ELSE DIRECTLY RIGHT NOW - INCLUDING ME. There is another female jumper on the DZ with an extremely similar "profile" who just recently returned from a broken ankle, and a long lay-off. VERY SIMILAR history, and problems/concerns. Notice that she has over the past few weekends completely straightened those all out? You know who I am talking about. Go to her and find out how. You will hear what "clicked" for her, and because of your so similar "profiles" I am sure that she will be able to help APPROPRIATELY redirect (and thereby hopefully help "unclutter" & "refocus") you accordingly. Hit that "reset" button girl. Take a breath and reconnoiter! "Gizmo's", even if this one were to have a chance of functioning the way you were somehow looking for (which it DOESN'T), are not the begin all and end all in ANY case! Let's dispell even thinking of going there, towards any sort of reliance on a gizmo as being a possible SOLUTION for "deficiencies" as being your "go-to" early on, okay?

Link is right in his post. Chris.... Question: In looking at the video, it appears as though your reaction to spotting the glider is to immediately deploy (at 4-5k?) while still in a sit. Is that right? Or is this a result of edit/splicing of the video for size considerations? Am I seeing this right? coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Okay, why? Elaborate. Bad spot? Other canopy traffic? # on load? Your exit position compared to others? Anyone else further "out"? Again, Why? ...Please explain. Okay. ...Please share what that lesson was. It doesn't seem to be posted! Thanks. And Blues! -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Caught a jumper ON JUMPRUN about to exit last December with his cheststrap NOT routed through the tensioner (effectively UN-DONE!) at Elsinore. After I had mentioned it, and he was quickly then doing it up right ...ANOTHER jumper looks at me and says something like "yeah, I saw that too, but didn't want to say anything!" "I'm just visiting" - DUH! (hello! ...) coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Yeah. Go take up free-climbing will ya! Don't back down! You were right (for what you WANTED to say). See, just doesn't have the same effect. Give me a break. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. Bowling (as a "sport") doesn't have any feelings. Why are you worried that you hurt them then? I find the reference (where applicable), quite germane. Blues, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

JP, you've really put on your "New York" (attitude) since moving out east, haven't you? "Laid back" California now well behind you I see! coitus non circum - Moab Stone

How do you figure? For instance, Orange (VA) this season came out and voted (they are a "club") to be AAD MANDATORY DZ ...for ALL jumpers (even D licensed or not). That does not mean that they MAKE ME jump there with an AAD. You can always just simply decide NOT to jump there! I just don't jump there at all anymore as a result, as of this season. That's all. What is the "REQUIREMENT" creating "legal liability" that you do? Sounds to me as if you CHOSE instead to buy that Cypres so you could jump there. Again, ...your CHOICE. DZ's can, as individual businesses or clubs, decide on and impliment whatever rules they want. As a result, WE can decide for ourselves based upon them whether or not we jump there. I'm afraid I don't understand where your LEGAL LIABILITY exposure remarks come from? Enlighten me. But USPA DOES require them for all non-license holders (students, and novices). So, what's the difference there? I don't think I've ever heard either this position or "argument" before from the perspective of there being an actual liability FOR, or as a result of requiring an AAD. Again, to me though, it is of absolutely no issue. If a dropzone tells me I HAVE TO wear an AAD to jump there, I just quite simply: Don't jump there. That's all. It's their business decision to accept that business loss. I still call that personal CHOICE though, don't you? 'splain this legal liability to me as a result that you think you see out of this though. I'm curious as to whether that's a valid "argument" for anything or not. I happen to like (or did) jumping at Orange. If I can gather some information to get them to possibly reverse their decision (rather than buy a Cypres just to be able to jump there), you'd make me a happy boy! With the price of fuel driving up not only the cost of jump tickets lately, but the cost (more than a jump itself for me) to even get TO the DZ in the firstlpace, ...just recently with my Cypres (1) hitting the end of it's 12 year service life, I had to decide whether to buy a new AAD, at the cost also of sacrificing jumping. I woud almost never "not jump", just because I did not have a Cypres (or AAD). If I did, I would have to reconsider the jump altogether itself regardless, in the very first place! In other words, don't do anything more "dangerous" than what you are comfortable (and confident in your abilities) with, JUST BECAUSE you have a Cypres (AAD) on! To me, that is just not (or should not be) the decision factor in whether to jump or not. But that is just me. YMMV. Do what is right for YOU. Blue Skies, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

BINGO! ...And then let's say by some FLUKE you were able to pull the pin manually, and the PC in tow was because of a misrouted bridal. Now what you've gone and (probably) caused is a LOT more potential MESS just above your back for your reserve to fire into that some misrouted bridals might not even "allow" to be released (in either case) during EP's (assuming now after messing with this for a while that you actually even got this far), instead of JUST your PC ...which your reserve OTHERWISE would have a much greater chance of clearing. "Instinctively" is the word in the original posters post here though that bothers me. What do you mean by "instinct" in this case, and where the heck did THAT come from at only 100 or so total jumps? Maybe if you KNEW what you were doing, and this were a CONSIDERED manuever, ...but "instinct"? ...?? Is this trained somehow now adays that such a low-time jumper could ever consider something like this somehow "instinctively"? JHeadley, You now mention another jumper too who apparently did the same thing until his Cypres actually fired? Now this really concerns me. - Anyone else? coitus non circum - Moab Stone

We have a club for just such an event out here, corn. Welcome to the "Lisa-san Lineover" club, where you are now member #3! To be a member of the club, as you have just done, you must actually CLEAR the lineover above/before your hard-deck. Any violation of that instead, places you into an entirely different club altogether. Blues, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Do you single-stow each line-bite or double stow them? Do you single only the "locking" stows, then double the rest? Or some combination thereof? Also, I have seen where a low-time jumper/packer such as yourself has missed a grommet in the bag flap/cover and stowed a bite. Do you have a 2 grommet or a 4 grommet bag? There are actually several possibilities to have induced what you are describing to occur, based on several variables that maybe with more info we can discern. If your 1st 2-3 stow bites released evenly as they should as the bag came off your back, but the 3rd or 4th got hung up, even just briefly because of one of these potential variables, it is quite conceivable that your twists (or even a small tension knot combined with them) could occur exactly where they did, and as you are describing. Chances are though, that now at this point, you will probably never KNOW. Hope at least this much helps. Blues, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

The "45 degree rule" for exit separation DOES NOT WORK
Scrumpot replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Just remember too, that it is not always either practical or practicable for ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY, ie: each and every individual jumper to be "looking" and checking their spot(s) before they exit. For example on an 8-9-10+ way out of an Otter, sometimes you HAVE TO rely on someone else in your group to have done that task. Sometimes it is the cameraman setting up in advance of your group, as he/she is the 1st one out ...taking up the camera step upon their climb-out 1st, behind the group that may have left in front of you too. If each and EVERY jumper in that group had to stop and look for themselves, then heck ...you'd never get any good RW put together out there. Sometimes you do have to trust somebody else in your group to have done the task appropriately for you in those cases. I'll bet Billvon, a few weeks ago when he was last out on several 20+ ways (and being told all day: "go no-lift turbo!" -I know you love to hear that, Bill ) didn't stop and look each and every time BEFORE he left in that situation either. Again, sometimes that is just not practicable. But in knowing (and practicing) in which situations it is, and in understanding (even being a part) of those, and then WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT (ie: read 45' rule ...???) in this context, and in application with this thread is what is important. Seems you are learning, GF. - - - -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone -

Scrumpot replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah, I remember what I think was probably one of your 1st times you decided that you WANTED to look for yourself. ...As I recall, you actually pushed somebody (hmmmm, who might that be ) back out of your way, and exclaimed rather loudly: "I can handle this"! ...Good on you girl! -

Scrumpot replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah, LOL I too have ragged on Billvon about that one before as well. About a year and a half ago, just AFTER he had done his "practical study" right there (setting up camera's at 45' angles and filming jumpers from both the Perris Otters), I think they actually PRINTED the 45' "rule" right on a manifest window rule displayed paper and then again even later too on a safety-day check-list. ... coitus non circum - Moab Stone -
How many lives have been saved by AADs ?
Scrumpot replied to cocheese's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
...And unfortunately I also know of at least 2 more. Valid point. But actually, I think based on what Bill is saying, and the point he is making (intimating at least), is that it is more than just that. Knowing your gear, then relying on your training (and learning and experience) are more fully, the appropriate COMBINATION. Something to think about. "Knowing" that you have a Cypres, then RELYING on it, can also be (and unfortunately has been ) a proven mistake. Just knowing how to set it (etc. as I know it is you are in part referring to) is only 1/2 the battle. BSBD, -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone -
But their "shape" (ie: presentation into the resisting force, ie: relative wind) is different. -No? Therefore, the prof's considerations seem (at least to this non-physics professor) to be applied correctly and perfectly valid. Or is there something else in my observation of your 2's debate over this that I am still missing?? -Grant coitus non circum - Moab Stone

Accessibility to the Federal Flood Insurance Program is controlled (and predicated) upon the community "participating" in the FEMA sponsored program. Whereas the article mentions that this community IS participating (which can be verified independently), then yes ...the development and all individual homeowners, builders and/or purchasers would be elligible for flood insurance. For any homeowners who end up purchasing their homes there utilizing most commonly-available mortgage financing (and FNMA/FHLMC "agency conforming" in particular), ...separate, and SPECIFIC flood insurance in fact, would be a REQUIREMENT to the attaining of such mortgage. A community's either participation (or not) is really the only underwriting criterion governing it's availability to the individual homeowner, period. Separate and specific federal flood program insurance polcies are not "individually underwritten" at all, otherwise in any other way. Hopefully this answers your question Andy, at least in respect to that. "PMI" by-the-way (mentioned by another poster) stands for Private Mortgage Insurance, which protects THE LENDER (against borrower default), and is an entirely separate matter in respect to all this, altogether.
