  1. Yes. But they might also develop a larger capacity to irrationally hate another group of people too. From Jesus??? Most Christians i've met learned more from their Church, their pastors and their sunday school teachers than they ever did from Jesus, and learning from the text itself is rather limited when their understanding is filtered through the first three... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  2. somewhere in the realm of 30 (I'll count when i'm home again)on the Christian shelf alone, and a few more in boxes elsewhere, depending on what you qualify as a "Bible" some wont pass muster for 'official christians' but i take each text for what it is and the insights it may contain..... if you cannot see how blatantly 'politically' motivated this is..... what is truly ironic is how Christians fail to recognize that the crux of this statement APPLIES TO THEM, their Church, their culturally limited beliefs, and even the Text itself.... "ohhh he meant all those OTHER religions... but ours is True..." never mind that the Christian Mythos and belief has clearly been 'designed' by the 'skills' of its writers and editors... i dont "follow" ANY of man's religions.. i study the practice and principles of all (i can find) Man's religions to learn more about Man, more about his relationship with Divinity, and more about Divinity itself.... Divinity really has no need or care for the majority of issues the Christian Bible spouts. Man however cares a great deal about the most inconsequential things, and has proven perfectly willing to condemn, persecute and kill anyone who disagrees, with his political agenda while claiming God's will...... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  3. That is nonsensical. Added: That's like saying: - I am all powerful, all knowing, and ever present. - I built a treehouse in the front yard. - Therefore, I am the treehouse that I created. such a simplistic thought process.. and a christian claiming ‘sense’ as a defense… did you create the tree? did you create that which nourishes the tree? Are you the Prime Mover for EVERYTHING's existence? if not, you are not God.. if you are, and did, and existence itself spins solely because YOU willed to do so, YOU aka “God” are responsible for the end result of all you create (particularly if you also "know" the outcome of every decision before the decider even exists) God has no adversary. Only children and primitive minds need boogie men to scare them into behaving.... However if you wish to debate from ‘inside’ the Christian Mythos.. perhaps you should study the theological concept of “Fortunate Fall”… Satan didn’t rebel, he was pushed….. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  4. this time of year, after 1pm.. only the foolish and the indestructable continue to jump.. thermals and dustdevils are not your friends... but you can do 10 jumps pretty easy still any day you get there for 1st or 2nd loads.. (not that i'd know lately.. all work and no play makes jack a dull boy... all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.. all work and no play.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  5. If this is what you wish to believe... It's obvious that you have read a lot of the anti-christian, anti-bible propaganda and bought it. I hope that you'll consider the other side rather than dismiss it out of hand. Of course, if you have ever read any research from the other side, I'd be interested in your reason for dismissing it, or what proof you've seen that it's wrong. actually you still dont get it.. i can quote scripture as well (but perhaps better as i'd imagine you are more 'current' than i) as you. I was raised and formally educated by a number of recognized "Christian" Schools, in three separate sects Catholic, Methodist and Baptist. In point of fact, i'm willing to bet a jump ticket i've more bibles in the room i'm typing this from than you have ever owned in your entire life. however I also have copies of every other major, minor, living and dead religious related text i've been lucky enough to acquire in here as well, and I have read all of them, some nearly as many times as I have read the Bible you may not have completed yet. In addition, I continue to participate in, discuss in depth, learn and study from the majority of the worlds actively practiced religions (as i can arrange) in my time orbiting the sun. never pretend i've dismissed anything out of hand, unlike you I am not limiting my experience of Life, of Love and Divinity to the confines of a single of MAN's religions. an analogy i quite enjoy is that of Pie. I understand you live and die for Apple pie. some feel the same about Pumpkin there exist more types of Pie than you will ever taste, ever hear of, ever even imagine or dream and forget about..... you only miss the true wonder and variety of life (and therefore Divinity) by limiting yourself, your imagination and experience to the Worship of Apple Pie. they are all still Pi. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  6. apparently not.. because by the difference of your belief, and that is all it is, all the "Evidence" you have that the character 'Christ' (your God Incarnate) as described in the present day Bible, one of the most translated, retranslated, edited, censored and tailored for content by the "Church" actually spoke the words in Red in your sacred text is YOUR BELIEF. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  7. oh look a red letter believer... havent seen one of those in a while... see what you fail to grasp is that "Christ" did not mention anything.. any more than Hamlet mentioned anything... your limited understanding of the "Central Message" of the character of Christ was written, edited and translated BY MAN. There is no questioning this fundamental fact. what you learn from the story of Christ is entirely up to you, but there are many equal valid, equal useful stories to learn from as well. God is more than the single cultural Mythos you've devoted your life too and there is a great deal you could learn about Humanity and Yourself by expanding your awareness of Divinity everywhere in every cultural manifestation.. some children never outgrow their security blankets, and some who are injured never learn to walk without their crutches again.... not because they cannot, but because they've never learned to trust in the abilities inately granted them by God, and lean instead forever on the Religion(s) of Man..... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  8. Here's some evidence for the existence of God; it's called Conscience... the law of God written on our hearts. Some ignore it, and it becomes seared. lol.. more threats from the religion of the 'loving' god.. sorry but recognition of Divinity does NOT require you chose any of mans other names for it..... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  9. blah blah blah.. no YOU believe they did, because your literature says so and believe your entire existence is tied up into going to 'heaven' your eternal reward for 'good behavior'.. basic carrot/stick. nothing new.... however it doesnt make it any more true than claims of any other text by any other author or any other Religion ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  10. I'd've thought that being sent to the principal's office would be appropriate. I'll just bet that the student was innocently humming that just when they were having a disagreement with a teacher that they didn't like. i used to humm "if i only had a brain" to teachers i disagreed with... most of them were to musically illiterate to get it.. the two that did BOTH sent me to the office... i they were also two of the better teachers i encountered in AL public schools when i think about it in retrospect ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  11. Hmm, too bad that these same ideas can't be taught without the use of a myth. To me, they seem pretty simple, fundamental to society 'working'. I don't need to believe some BS story to think that these are good things to do; and I honestly can't understand why anyone else would need to either. oh no.. Myth is both the first and best teaching tool. As these kinds of discussions make obvious, Myth ingraines behavior and belief so deeply people are willing to live, die and kill based only on the depth and strength of their personal belief in those myths. at the same time the Story is the vehicle by which Myth is spread. after that its all about who tells the best Story to the widest audience of willing listeners...the Stories that survive adapt and grow best are passed on to become the next generations Myths. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  12. no the bible REFERENCES much History in the same manner Private Ryan references the history of WWII, it contains very little additions to history however it does create new Myth and like the best does so on the foundations of earlier Myth. Just as the art of language developed, the art of storytelling (through the written word) did as well. Shakespeare (and every other writer since) owes much to the writers (and editors) of the biblical text, but that doesnt make either of them any more factual. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  13. Speaking only generally, if they all result in turning at will, any of them are correct. God isn't "one size fits all." Not every god is God. Prove it! show one example where another's religion DID NOT support and comfort them just as well as yours does you when they put their full belief into it.... Xtains often using "dying for their belief" as 'evidence' of their God's "Truth" but the FACTs are heathens have and continue to die JUST AS WELL (if not better) for their beliefs... and the lions arent picky.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  14. not even close.. (see below for one description of the difference, if that doesnt do it for you try a dictionary) and how exactly do YOU determine what SOMEONE else 'struggles' with?? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  15. someone pointed out my signature quote was 'wrong', and they are correct i did not quote Life of Brian correctly. But that wasnt the point. I typed it as I recalled it which in turn reveals something about its meaning to me. so then the question is: Do you struggle With reality? Against reality? or have you learned there is no struggle at all...... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  16. the reaction against the women's role from earlier matriarchal based religions sucks being reduced to 'just a rib' but it is all about power more than ability ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

    Dreams?

informal poll, after a long discussion with someone who claims "ALL dreams are black and white" .... thanks for your time feel free to discuss whatever aspect of dreams and dreaming you feel like ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  18. wow. do you have any original thoughts? that entire post is sadly regurgitated, inane christian assertions that are NOT backed by any objective evidence.. literature? absolutely. history? hardly.. they are and always have been Myths. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  19. Point and counterpoint Wendy W. it's tough, I have both of the play books in front of me and can't decide which kool aid to drink - if I mix the red and blue together, the sugar just settles out and goes to the bottom of the pitcher in a nasty mess. you want the one in the corner market 'electric'. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

  21. Organized religion IS a crutch.. however crutches are not bad things when used correctly.. they are simply external support, a means to help you recover to your own abilities.. the problem enters when the crutch(the Church) becomes its own thing, a self serving, self perpetuating structure, unwilling to be left behind when it is no longer needed by the individual or society as a whole.. it then becomes a dead weight. A weight that many people continue to carry, hypnotized by the whispers of the crutch that has convinced them they could have never accomplished anything without it and that any other 'walking staff' someone might have found along their own path is 'the enemy' ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  22. despite what you may have been told by your parents.. you dont have to clean your plate.. the starving children in Africa will not be getting your left overs in any case.. i get 2-3 meals out of most resturant orders, so can anyone else.. IF they make themselves put down the fork and ask for a take out container... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  23. i'd say your not paying attention.. when the three guys in front of me (who could all use a wheelbarrow's assistance to haul their bellies about without any major contortions. no kidding) order double bacon cheeseburgers every day (with the salad bar just behind them and a multitude of other tastier if less healthy choices just as easily available) they are saying (to themselves, and everyone around them) "I dont give a fuck" the process itself isnt hard.. you eat less, exercise more, practice DISCIPLINE. Recognize that you control your body. it does not control you (unless you allow it). It is the performance that is difficult and it is difficult because (many) Americans have NEVER developed basic discipline about ANYTHING.. at some point they 'wake up' and attempt to learn such skills at 33, already overweight, with poor eating and exercise habits and a poor attitude for success.... it is damn near a lost cause.. those who DO manage it, overcome amazing odds and obstacles... however THEY (and their parents) CREATED THEM to begin with... its astounding really... and i do I see them everyday, have to work with and accommodate their (lack of) ability as we attempt to accomplish what would be an easy task for an otherwise (reasonably) fit individual, but since the ladder wont hold him, he cant get into any of the available lift devices, and there is no one else around, I have to drop what i'm doing and complete his task... and still they waddle thru the halls to lunch (the only time some of them leave their desks i imagine) all the while work; subsidizes gym fees, provides a cafeteria with MANY healthier options to eat, actively encourages daily walk&talk meetings options and still large number of obese (not simply overwieght mind you there is a HUGE difference) simply dont care, cant be bothered with the most basic changes, and order the double bacon cheese burger everyday.... it isnt about lacking compassion, it's about pushing personal responsibility and discipline at a social level. Teaching everyone (particularly future parents) basic personal discipline and accountability. It isnt like your wieght sneeks up on you, you simply have to DECIDE (not merely say you will) to do something about it an ounce of Prevention (aka teaching discipline, not simply in eating habits but in all aspects of life) early on means barring exceptional conditions/circumstances never have to do the 'heavily lifting' and long struggle for the the rest of your life trying to 'catch up' to where you feel you 'should be' fitness wise. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  24. I once had a GF's father threaten me with an empty revolver (some what like that.. remove the boobs add a beer gut)... he was suprised when I wasnt immediately frightened and VERY suprised when i took it out of his hands.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
  25. this frightens me more than anything else.. as Mnealtx pointed out Starship Troopers was an absolute travesty.. John Carter was/is one of the greatest swordsmen in any fictional genre. Hollywood has done a piss poor job of recreating/directing ANY decent sword work (witness the decline in swordplay in SW, and silly chinese style acrobatics in place of real exchanges in recent Musketeers flicks) in the last few decades (most actors NEVER study fencing anymore where once EVERYONE did as part of their basic training. However the 'style' of 'Martian Sword work" as described by ERB (lower gravity allowed John Carter to do things he could never do on Earth) would lend itself nicely to 'wire-fu' stunts, IF they kept the traditional rapier/sabre play a Civil War era soldier would know.. picking a wrestler is ludicrous, particularly one who due to ego isnt likely to spend months learning 'simple' choreographed sword play.... i'm not holding my breath on this one at all.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
