Brand-the look feel of a product. In this case, the produce is the website, a gathering of skydivers in a central location. Kind of like the [shameless plug]World Freefall Convention[/shameless plug] ----- ~~~Michael

So, let me throw this into the mix. The subcontractor agreement that the instructor signs clearly states, and has for several years, that the instructor might be subject to a random drug test. Since the instructor has signed it for several years, they are aware that this is a condition of being an instructor at the dz. (this is no place to stick in the 'well the instructor never read it' comment because we are all responsible for what we sign) Now, fast forward to the present. DZO decides to equally apply initial tests, then random tests to all staffers and a one, two, maybe more, maybe less, balk because they don't want their private lives invaded. (refer to above where they signed the contract refering to random drug testing) Thoughts?

There's a two fold answer to that question...If I was the student, you would also be putting me in a potential risky situation. Somewhere I dont' want to be...i.e. you're possibly increasing my personal exposure to an incident.

I did it 12 years ago when I left Illinois and I'm not too worried now. I'm a trooper, I'll live. Besides, I've got no debt other than my truck payment. WooHoo!!!

I have many hats, but you'll have to come to the WFFC to see them all. I'll be down in Peoria but will definately be up to SDC sometime in the near future...

Tomorrow, April 9th at 14:30 MST, I become voluntarily unemployed. April 15th, I begin the trek East to Illinois...That's what's next...

Ummm...Balloon and Helo jumps on Saturday and Sunday. You at least need to come out and give me a hug bye...

It's almost summer (even though it snowed again this week). Everyone will go to their respective DZ and have fun. The bickering won't start again until the end of the season.

Night jumps kick ass! I've got 10 or 12 now. Still remember the first one though, jump #51, dead center in the peas...

You obviously don't know Frank.

Does your DZ have a drug testing policy for Staff members?
WFFC replied to WFFC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
put stop gaps in place that try to 'prevent' (edit to add: prevention will not necessarily stop a problem, but it could help in avoiding it) things from happening, which is what some DZOs are doing with random pee cup tests. Sure, it will run some fulltime JMs off. Just because a company has 'rules' in place that you don't like doesn't mean you need to work there. It's a free country to make the choice to work there or not. If you do choose to accept a position, you are subject to the companies rules. It would be a condition of employment - we hire you, pay you so you have to follow our rules, OK? Simply put, it's your choice to get on the airplane and be in the sky with someone that scares you not only in freefall but their ability to fly their canopy without running into you. You can get off the plane and wait till the next available load. ----- ~~~Michael -

Yes, but the caveat, don't take someone else (student, other skydiver, etc.) out with you -
Does your DZ have a drug testing policy for Staff members?

The general topic was 'does your dz test staff member and what dz'. it's fluctuated a little bit and I would prefer that it not change into a dz debate. btw-Val, tell Bob I'll be up sometime this summer before the WFFC since I'm moving back in the neighborhood. -

If a condition of initial or continued employment is peeing in a cup, your 4th amendment rights are not being violated. -

Figured as much, but just wanted to add some others to the mix that are implementing policies. Roger gets picked on enough as it is and SDC came up a few times so just wanted to make sure that others are doing this. It affects the whole sport as a whole even though some might say that it's a local political/advertising/whatever battle. Our family is small so when people hear of 1 incident where a jumper went in and had traces of xyz in their system, the 'perceived' public opinion is that all skydivers are adrenaline crazed drug addicts. hence this discussion. Unfortunately, some are not able to do that. I don't believe so, but I'll check -

Does your DZ have a drug testing policy for Staff members?
WFFC replied to WFFC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Skydive Chicago is implementing a policy this year. I believe from another post, DiverDriver said that one of the fatalities was substance related, the other not. There are other DZs that already have a policy in place, others that are implementing one now so this isn't a pick on SDC message. Mile Hi Skydiving in Colorado is implenting a policy this year. I have a short list of other DZs that either have one in place or are looking at doing one that I might post later. -

WFFC replied to WFFC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Agreed. I believe that people just don't want to submit to the test under the 'invasion of privacy' guise. The assumption is that if they're asked to submit to a test and they refuse, they must be on something. ----- ~~~Michael -
They are not.

Does you DZ have a drug testing policy for staff members? If you don't know, don't answer. Also please list your DZ if there is a current policy in place. Not looking for the right/wrong opinion, just does one exist or not. -
Drug testing for DZ Instructors/TMs/Pilots

Unfortunately, the world is run by stats, so not lame. If in doubt, look at your insurance rates on your vehicle. -
Drug testing for DZ Instructors/TMs/Pilots

Just random thoughts but try these: 1. more sick time 2. degraded performance (alcohol issues too) I can't think of others right now, but this should get it started. Companies base a lot of their data on stats. If it's determined that the non substance abuser has an average of 3.2 sick days per year, and the average substance abuser has 3.9, that's an additional expense to the company that they may not want bear. If you haven't had the chance to watch the movie Gattica (sp?). -
Drug testing for DZ Instructors/TMs/Pilots
WFFC replied to diverdriver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Agreed, but employers have the right to know if their employess have issues with substances that have been listed as illegal. A local desktop publishing software maker here in Denver was going to implement a drug testing policy. They determined that there would lose more than half of the development staff and thus did not implement the policy. Keep in mind that none of these people has other people's lives entrusted to them. -

Skydiving, from what I could find, is the only form of aviation in the U.S. that does not have drug testing as a requirement. Chris-is this right? -

OK..Devil's Advocate - How do you know? Just so you know my position on pee tests, I don't agree with them in most cases. Had to take one for a part time job several years ago then got the random selection right after I got back from Amsterdam. Spent a little time in one of the brown cafes and failed the test. btw - I do not do and never have done any drugs deemed as illegal. Apparently the positive came from enough second hand smoke that made me 'happy' while having lunch. I do agree with them when people are entrusted with peoples lives. I don't really want the guy sitting behind the stick to do anything that could potentially impair their ability to get me to altitude safely.
