BSR proposal for canopy patterns
ianmdrennan replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, in his words (paraphrased) - the dzo's should implement the solution according to their dropzone needs. Pretty much the same thing the bsr proposes except he doesn't feel that it should be 'law'. John, if you have to intentionally misrepresent the poster to make your point, maybe it's time to re-evaluate how you're making it - or maybe admit that you're both striving for the same objective but don't necessarily agree how to get there. That doesn't make either one of you more right than the other - just different approaches. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -
It absolutely would NOT solve all the problems. You continue to ignore that the majority of collisions worldwide over the last 4 years do not involve a HP pilot. The BSR proponents continue to push this as some sort of magical solution that will suddenly make the skies safe - people will still break the BSR -some intentionally and some unintentionally. Both will still make the skies more dangerous. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

BSR proposal for canopy patterns
ianmdrennan replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Really? In my experience a TINY (and I mean TINY) amount of skydivers have had any formal canopy training other than AFF or basic A license stuff. Education hasn't been given a shot yet - it's not taken seriously by the majority of the community. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -
When you get it relined make sure you put on the HMA. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Ian Drennan made me angry for all the right reasons
ianmdrennan replied to McDuck's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Guys, thank you - really, I appreciate the thoughts. That said this shouldn't be about 'me', instead it should be about what WE as a community can do to further the art of canopy flight and education for both those who wish to take their wings to the next level as well as those who are content with their current wings. That saying 'it takes a village to raise a child' is really appropriate here. We all should be doing whatever we can to help make the skies safer. Each and every one of us should be doing whatever we can to learn more about canopy flight and practices...and then pass it along to anyone who'll listen -
If it has 500 jumps on the microline lineset it used to come with, it's out of trim. The hurricane is a Katana like canopy and very high performance. If it has 500 jumps with the HMA lineset they are now selling them with, it's also time for a reline as they are nearing the end of their lifespan. The best thing you can do is call around and shop for a brand new one. Once you have a price for that you can make the decision whether the 20 jump one is discounted sufficiently for people to want to purchase it 2nd hand Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Kevin, Thank you for posting that. Scarey stuff. I'm glad you're ok (relatively speaking ) Hope your arm gets better fast. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

I don't think so. Education would not have worked for Danny. He knew what he was doing. I disagree with you Bill. Considering the number of 'Danny' type incidents vs the number of 'Just didn't know better' I believe you're way off base. Education is NEVER not, at least part, of the solution. Kevin, Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad that you were all so open to learning, putting aside pre-conceptions, and recognizing that the frurstration you felt was short term -
Please check out the diagrams I did for patterns, and explain to me how exactly flying directly towards people on their final is a safe option? IMO 180's are the WORST kinds of turns in traffic because of the pattern flight requirements. Pattern diagrams Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

So far I haven't seen anyone argue against my point. If you actually bothered to read what I was saying I've NEVER, EVER been against seperate landing areas. What I am against is anything that provides an exception clause for non HP pilots to enter the HP pattern - just like it's expected that HP pilots don't enter the standard pattern in an HP manner. What I have seen is lot of baseless name calling and a lot of it from yourself. Really, don't lecture me on maturity. Take it that way if you want, it certainly wasn't intended to be that way. It was actually a comment on the fact that I spend my time coaching people, for free (and at my own expense I might add), trying to make a difference with ACTIONS - not useless internet babble. Nope, no regrets - then again none of mine are 'impulse' tattoos they have all been for a specific reason. In fact, I'm waiting on the design on my 3rd one. It should be just as big as the Phoenix - I'll show you when the designs are done

Agreed. It's just a shifting of the existing problem to another groups airspace. Seriously folks, we (swoopers) don't want the crazy flyers any more than you do. IMO, it keeps going back to: 1) Education 2) Peer Pressure Blues, Ian Wrong, it keeps on getting back to separating totally incompatible flight regimes. If, for example, you want to do aerobatics, you must be in an area that is dedicated to the purpose at the time. If you want to fly in the pattern, you must fly the pattern. Period. Someone shooting an accuracy landing in a dedicated swoop area is in the wrong. Someone executing a "normal" approach and landing in a dedicated swoop area is in the wrong. Someone swooping through either the accuracy landing area or through traffic is in the wrong. A BSR that says that you must separate incompatible landing patterns by either space or time hurts nobody. Swooping into accuracy jumpers or canopies in the pattern is hazardous to your health. Changing the wording of the BSR proposals to clarify the purpose that nobody should fly in fear of a collision on short final is fine with me, but thinking that education and peer pressure alone will resolve the issue is naive. If you want to apply peer pressure to Danny Page, you won't have any more luck than you will in trying to educate him. A BSR is the least onerous means of mandating the separation between incompatible landing patterns. Adding education and peer pressure can make it work. Blue skies, Winsor I submit that you don't see the issues that I'm concerned about or I've done a poor job vocalizing them. I have explicitly asked one of the proposed bsr writers about non-hp landings in the hp area. They felt it was ok because 'it was going to happen from time to time as people make mistakes'. If a BSR says it's OK to land in, or fly patterns through, the HP area while not doing HP approaches, you're not going to get my support on it. Period. Right there it's allowing for the mixing of approaches/patterns. It amuses me to read the arguments that this is ok, especially when they come from the very people crying out that seperation is necessary. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Some pilots have raised concerns about how the BSR is written to accomplish that. From what I've seen very, very few people are against making the skies safer - there are just concerns about whether the suggested BSR, as written, really does accomplish it's objective or whether it simply makes people feel better without solving the problem, or if it potentially makes the problem worse.
