When was your skydiving epiphany?
Andy0689 replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Mine was 20 years ago when I had my first static line jump at the army's Airborne School. I have not excuse why I waited so long to start skydiving. I distinctly remember the first time I stepped out the door- I forgot to count and recall looking at my boots and noting how they were still shiny despite all the running around that morning. Requirements for B License
Andy0689 replied to waterboy3412's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree. My a-license check dive was with another person and we followed the dive flow as planned so does that count? If the SIM is subjective then I guess it's up to me and my instructor to determine how a "group" is defined. Especially since he'll be the one signing the form. I originally asked because I've had some 2-way RW skills jumps with other friends go well. All we did on the jumps was simple stuff with limited objectives such as nailing the exit, adjusting and maintaining fall rates with a couple of sidebodies thrown in. Would anyone say that that those count? Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! -
Why not just go south a little to Skydive Snohomish. Their website shows Tandem and Static Line progression. DZ.com reviews here show AFF but their website doesn't. Rates are on their website too. It looks like it's only a couple hours from Vancouver and cheaper than $4k even with a 1.15 conversion rate. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

Requirements for B License

Is there a minimum for the size of the "group?" I heard someone say it had to be 4-ways or larger. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! -
Or one of these. I was allowed to wear my own open-faced helmet through AFF. I had a Sky Systems Benny and talked with my instructor prior to jumping. I didn't spring it on him plane side and ask if I could wear it through the course. It'll depend on what your instructor says. I can't imagine going to him with a line like, "I asked a bunch of folks on DZ.com and they all said I should be fine wearing my own helmet during AFF." Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

That's pretty cool. And who says that hard work doesn't pay off? I used my bonus last year to pay for AFF. So, is that 15 jumps with rental or 15 lift tickets? Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

Have you ever spat under canopy?
Andy0689 replied to KermieCorleone's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Blow a bubble first and then spit it out. You can watch it longer. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! -
Do you shop at REI? US Bank has an REI card that boosts your annual dividend. No annual fee, full REI dividend on all REI purchases (except sale items) and 1% towards dividend for all non-REI purchases. Interest rate sucks but we pay it off every month. It's pretty sweet to get a $300+ dividend every spring. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

I agree. A lot of folks knock digitals for newbies but if you have a full head on your shoulders, read the manual and take time to learn how the device works it's not hard to figure out. The important thing being that you do in fact take the time to read the manual and learn the device to a point of being a anal about it. The VISO has some particulars about it as I'm sure any digital alti has so it's not straight forward like an analog. When I asked my instructor about a digital or alti he basically told me after some discussion that either is fine. I started using my VISO on jump 8 right after I finished AFF. Still opinions vary and I'm not knocking those who say that newbies shouldn't use digital altimeters. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

Here's the thread for the recent discussion on VISO altis. I'm a new jumper and got a VISO upon completion of AFF and after the digital vs. analog discussion with my instructor. I'm happy with it but think I'd be equally happy with an analog. The logging features of the digital altis is nice. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

Have you talked to your instructor? What are you jumping now? Is the 160 your weight or exit weight? If it's your weight then your exit weight is 185-190 which will give you over a ~1.2 WL on what was "initially seen as the highest performance canopy available to the expert pilot" (from the PD website). Check the SIM (p. 109) for WL recommendations and http://www.bigairsportz.com/pdf/bas-sizingchart.pdf for canopy size recommendations. Talk to your instructor and others at your DZ as you progress through AFF about canopies and rigs. And, from one newb to another, please search here some more before you get blasted as this topic has been discussed quite a bit. There is a wealth of information here and much to learn from. PD Optimum - Where to find one for a decent deal?
Andy0689 replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Gear and Rigging
Oh. I was just going by what I was told on the phone and apologize if I'm wrong. I got a price quote over the phone on a PD Spectre from one of them for $1750 and $1758 from another. Retail is $1930 as listed/advertised on both retailers' websites. That's less than a 10% discount but still a discount. Like you said, minimum at best but every little helps. So, is the $1750 is the minimum retail policy agreement? Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! -
From the Square1 website, "Now available in sizes 99 - 253!" Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!

PD Optimum - Where to find one for a decent deal?
Andy0689 replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Gear and Rigging
I just went through the whole rig buying process. Unless something has changed in the past few weeks, retailers have to list PD products at MSRP but can sell them for a cheaper price- at least that's what someone at Square1 or ParaGear told me when I called. That's why the catalogs/web have a note to call for their price. Both Square1 and ParaGear have that statement on their websites. I can't remember the price on the Optimum at ParaGear or Square1 but both were under MSRP with different wait times. Don't forget to check Chuting Star too. Mike took really good care of me and I ended up getting everything through him except my main which I bought used. Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube! -
I agree with reading the SIM. Start reading it now and keep reading it through AFF and as you work on your A. It'll help you prepare for the AFF levels and reinforce what you learn throughout AFF. Keep reviewing and it'll help you with the whole A-license process as well as make you more confident with jumping all around. I just finished my A and I'm still reading it. I have found PD's canopy "Flight Characteristic" documents about their canopies are very accurate. I just returned a demo Spectre and am flying a new-to-me Sabre2. I flew both canopies within a few days of each other. Both descriptions of the canopies are very accurate so I imagine the same holds true for the other canopy descriptions. If you haven't tried it yet, the PD demo program is a pretty good deal. Very easy to sign up. I got a call within a couple of hours of signing up on the web. 7 Cells PD Storm PD Spectre 9 Cells Sabre2 PD Pulse Andy I'll believe it when I see it on YouTube!
