  1. The fewer fatalities there are, the more each one will induce angst and panic among the survivors. It's when you see the least trouble that the moaning is loudest. If somehow there were an entire year without a skydiving fatality, then another, then a third, but on the fourth year someone died, people would wring their hands and gnash their teeth. "O lord lord lord! How can we stop this unacceptable increase in deaths?!? Let the carnage cease!" Rules would be passed. Legislation would be enacted. Skydiving would be restricted, prohibited, banned. Nothing boosts safety anxiety like safety. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  2. I'm sure you're right. Both sides -- ALL of you -- are completely nuts. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  3. I'm sure the apologists will laugh it off no matter what comes out. If there were photos of Rove with a smoking gun and dead children in front of him, the photographer's voting history would be investigated vigorously. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  6. I have no interest in providing proof. Like you, I don't give a damn about the bible. Unlike you, I don't hide behind it as justification for laws I claim not to believe are right but will fight to the death to convince others of. And I could dig up posts where you claimed to eat worms, wear a tuxedo to the shower, and pour mayonnaise on your cat. Your point is? First Class Citizen Twice Over
  7. I could be evil and find old references to posts where you claimed you had information then blatantly ignored my repeated requests to produce it. You enjoy being on the other side of that snotty game, don't you? Looking way back to childhood, I think we used to say, "You can dish it out but you can't take it." First Class Citizen Twice Over
  8. Of course this means that freeing the slaves was also a "special right". First Class Citizen Twice Over
  9. Of COURSE it's equal. I want to be able to marry a man and then you'll be able to also. EVERYONE could marry a man. What's unequal about that? (Of course our lesbian sisters will also be able to marry women, just like straight men and straight women and everyone.) First Class Citizen Twice Over
  10. I'd be willing to bet some people in this discussion secretly long for the good old days. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  11. That's an excellent comparison. The salvation army did NOT force you into their beliefs while my husband and I are well known for forcing straight men to have sex with each other. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  12. Your point about the uneducated and voting keeps repeating in my mind. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  19. Purely hypothetical question about how you think voters in general behave. This is NOT about how YOU would vote. It's about how you think everyone else would vote. Imagine the following (ridiculous) question were put to the ballot: What do you think the final outcome would be? First Class Citizen Twice Over
  20. I suspect most people are simply incapable of thinking even slightly abstractly and a vote on gay marriage is just a teeny bit abstract. Gay marriage has nothing whatsoever to do with them and they can't think about things that are so far removed. So they imagine it's something that DOES have to do with them (like "Are you personally gay?") and since the answer to THAT question is "no", they vote "no" and can't understand why that's wrong. This is why you'll see people say, "I don't have any problem with gay people. Gay people are fine. I know some and they don't bother me at all." But then they'll still vote against gay marriage. They're simply answering the wrong question. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  21. I think I see the problem. When it's brought to a vote, people don't realize the question they're being asked. The question is, "Should the government prevent or allow gay people to marry?" But the voters against it think it says, "Do you personally want to be in a gay marriage?" So the voter thinks, "Hell, I'm not gay. I don't want to do gay things. I like to do STRAIGHT things. This question is about gay things and I don't want to do them so I guess I'm voting no." It's too bad people can't read these slightly complicated questions more clearly. 23. A friend was over tonight, talking about this topic. And he said something profound. He said, "You know, people could just be nicer to each other. That wouldn't do any damage to the world." I thought of you. First Class Citizen Twice Over
