  1. It's important to some straight guys to have violent emotional reactions to homosexuality. Or at least to EXPRESS violent emotional reactions. One or the other. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  2. I got 63%. That's pretty scary since my first two answers were "male" and "with men". First Class Citizen Twice Over
  3. On Mac IE you don't even have to use CTRL. It's just the default behavior. If the browser can't find the domain you typed, it adds ".com" and tries again. Whether or not it will work without the "www." is up to the system administrator of the domain. It's a small extra step that some people are too lazy to do. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  5. That's a fascinating idea but it does not have the virtue of being true. Intent plays a tremendous role in insult. And longstanding societal patterns of widespread intent play a correspondingly large role. That's why the word "nigger" is so powerful that many people believe it should never be spoken in ANY context. That strikes me as overkill, but nonetheless I'm reasonably careful not to say it in such a way as to cause upset. It's simple politeness to refrain from pissing people off unnecessarily. Sometimes it's necessary of course, but this can't be one of them, is it? On the other hand, I don't think anyone was pissed off. And that's why it's been a polite discussion of language instead of a steamed-up argument about rights or feelings or something. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  6. Oh, but you misunderstand. Words can have multiple meanings. People can use the word "gay" to mean homosexual and then another time use "gay" to mean ... well, whatever general derogatory use people mean by it. If they really mean "homosexual" then it's the same meaning with a negative connotation. But this use is simply a synonym for "bad". If people wanted to use "polack" to mean "Polish person" that would be perfectly reasonable. And it would STILL be rude to yell "Hey, polack!" at people as an insult. Mind you, I'm not much put out by all this. I think the loose reasoning is far more troublesome than a silly re-use of the word. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  7. I know some other slang words which name specific groups and are also used for general insults. The members of the groups generally don't like that much. They've largely fallen into disuse. Polack Nigger Mongloid etc. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  10. Reuters story Crane saves man after parachute fails BERLIN (Reuters) - A parachutist jumping from a 145-metre skyscraper escaped death when his chute failed to open properly but got snared on a crane next to the building leaving him hanging, German police say. "He got lucky after his initial misfortune," said a spokesman for police in the Bavarian capital Munich on Monday. Fire services took an hour to rescue the 32-year-old Austrian extreme sports enthusiast after his base jump from the 35th floor left him hanging 45 metres up. Police released the man, who is under investigation for making an illegal parachute jump, on bail of 450 euros (310 pounds). First Class Citizen Twice Over

  14. My local phone company has a service that has ENDED ALL OF THESE CALLS! I get literally ZERO of them. It's worked for four years. I don't remember what it's called but probably every phone company has it. Anyone with a number and name that doesn't appear in caller ID is blocked. However, they are given a second chance. They are asked by a recording to record their name. Then my phone rings and a recording says, "You have a call from To answer it, press 1." Telemarketers NEVER bother. They hang up and my phone just plain DOES NOT RING. Friends and family say their name, and I get the call. Try it. It's the best $5/month I've spent. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  17. I have a mixed history. My last boyfriend took me for a fool from day one through the last day two and a half years later. Now I'm living nearly five years of monogamy and trust, though that trust wasn't easy for me after the nightmare. By the way, there was no skydiving in the shitty relationship and lots of skydiving in the good one. Take that as you will. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  21. Mine is not formed with legal language. However, in a court setting, it would count as evidence. Lawyers will help you write lawyerly documents which might have a different sort of value. Personally, I think a legaleze document might convince a judge, but would do less to convince family and friends. And convincing family and friends not to even START this kind of action is more important. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  22. Designing this system in such a way that it will WORK is important. You found a flaw. Now can you find a solution? I think this is an excellent idea. Every jumper SHOULD have a will and a statement of self-responsibility. I've written one. Brian's accident and the unfortunate emotion-storm that followed should inspire EVERY jumper to write out their own personal "Don't blame anyone" essay then give copies to everyone who might need one. 23. Is that not what we have at he Perrine? That's exactly what we have at the Perrine -- this week. I'd like to keep jumping there next year and beyond. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  24. This sounds like a great idea. I agree with Tree that liability is bad and so are encroaching governmental oversight. But I don't agree that a well-designed informational campaign is necessarily going that direction. If the goal is lots and lots of base jumping at the Perrine with independence and individuality yet minimum bad outcomes, I can think of lots of ways to move forward and improve the situation. Organization is not always synonymous with oppression. In this case it might PREVENT oppression. This sounds like a positive outcome to me. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  25. There's about 25 people here now. There was a jump off the waterfall, one of Dwain's favorites. There was food and laughing and Doug told some ridiculous stories. Actually everyone told ridiculous stories. They're still telling them. And Crash brought a case of Weston Winery cabernet. I think it's all gone Keep jumping First Class Citizen Twice Over
