Guess you're right, got mine in the mail today. (Postmarked 9/10/12) so I'd expect many people will be getting them by the weekend. Second Tandem or AFF?
theonlyski replied to genericusername's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is unfortunately fairly common... As a T-I/AFF-I, I don't make any advances on my students... (not to mention the GF would probably kill me if she found out ) However, back to your question. I've seen it happen, girl gets a serious case of the hots for her T-I then shows up for AFF, she was unfocused because she wanted her T-I to be on her AFF jump (he wasn't, I was). Do you want to be sitting thru a course that could easily mean the difference between life or death while considering what your children would look like with a guy you've got a crush on? I say get your lust in check before trying to go to AFF at that dz (specifically while he is there). Rule number 1 about measuring for jumpsuits and rigs: Don't measure yourself. If you were wearing more or less clothing (or baggier/tighter clothing) then the measurements will be skewed. How to resprond to accidentally dislodged reserve handle

What bearing does that have? Absolutely none. Apparently nobody involved wants to talk about two potentially deadly events. Oh well, maybe next time. different altimeter readings in tracking
theonlyski replied to danielskydiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
If you're tilting your altimeter down (into the relative wind) it will show a difference than one that is on top of your hand. Think about the air pressure where the altimeter is. I started the thread about two VIGIL fires... The thread was to discuss them. One was on the bottom end of a swoop, that sounds like a "justified" fire. However the other was at 5k on a tandem. Advice on building a one-instructor (AFP) program
theonlyski replied to jonathan.newman's topic in Instructors
Call up Skydive Spaceland and I believe even Chicago Skydiving Center... If I recall correctly they both have a tandem progression that transitions them over to a single AFF-I to continue the progression. So far as transition training, there's a small blurb about it in the SIM on the Cat D intro under "Instructor: Transition Protocol" paragraph... But it doesn't seem to go into (anywhere I see at the moment) what training is required for that. However, the IRM does have a much better break down in the conversion requirements for the levels and even has a tandem progression from Cat A - H. The USPA system sort of worries me, as technically a T-I can oversee a student from their first jump to their A-License, but they're not trained for the freefall portions where the student isn't hooked up to them. No spin stops, rollovers, harness docks... none of it. The guidance is that the (non AFF rated instructor) seeing a student in danger does the same bottom end dance as a coach; turn burn and save themselves. Before anyone on here decides to chew my ass for not knowing what I'm talking about and not knowing what my ratings are valid for... I direct your attention to the USPA T-I proficiency card #16 as well as the IRM Tandem Instructor section. I've heard of at least 2 Vigil misfires this weekend. One on the bottom end of a swoop and one on a tandem around 5-6k. Any details? First page of the N3 user manual: But, given the current society in the US... I wouldn't be a tad bit surprised to see them get sued anyways. ETA: I somehow smashed the LCD on my N2 on exit last year, just broke off with the rest of the group and had an uneventful canopy ride. Also once forgot my altimeter on a rush to the plane, had my dytter in my helmet that was on, uneventful jump as well. drive up the night before, or do an all night drive
theonlyski replied to guineapiggie101's topic in The Bonfire
I wouldn't push it. Go 1/4 to 1/2 the way and get a hotel early. If you start feeling sleepy at the wheel, you're behind the power curve already. I've driven over night dozens of times and it was never a good idea... sometimes I even scared myself doing it. I'd be tempted to say blow the party off Friday and use those few hours as a head start. Once you get past your normal bed time, you're treading into dangerous waters. As with anything, different riggers may come up with different ways to accomplish this. The easiest IMO is to take a piece of an old bridle and cut off a foot or so section, sew loops on either end and larks head the extension on in between the existing bridle and canopy attachment point. This way it's completely reverseable and accomplishes the goal. One could probably also use square weave, but I prefer to put old parts to work first and keep the cost/price lower. DNS spoofing and such is a very real and possible explanation. Yet another reason I run my own DNS server that only forwards to DNS servers that I trust (after blocking all the ad servers). There are a couple of manufacturers that will make a bag that will fit just about any rig out there. FWIW, I have a UPT stowless bag and in over 200 jumps on it, I've replaced the bands less than 10 times. Many round reserve canopies have diapers that use 2-3 rubber bands (elastic retaining bands). They generally have line stows in the container which are rubber bands as well. Also, the Racer Speedbag has nothing but rubber bands for the stows, no 'safety stow' and no line stow pocket that are common to other rigs. St. Marys votes to kick off The Jumping place.
theonlyski replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's that kind of mentality that could potentially get flight restrictions placed over military bases from the ground till Class A airspace. Accidentally bypass security and somehow get into the Pentagon without permission and after being told to cut it out. Then say, "Well, it was just the cafeteria, nothing sensitive".
