80 year old lady lands plane as pilot collapses ...

And yet, a flight student managed to put down a SR-20 on a road a few miles from the runway because his GPS said that was the runway (and I STILL call BS on that one) "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message -

WTK: Looking for a Digital Altimeter (w/details)?
theonlyski replied to scottMO's topic in Gear and Rigging
anyway to override it and keep it in the 10.5 mode full time? or will the altimeter mode still show 4 digits under canopy (not as big of a deal to me)? Why would you want less data under canopy as opposed to more? Just curious. cause I like the big numbers on the current one I have but I figured there was somethig that offered the same thing, but just newer. If you are adding 1-2 more numbers to the display, then the numbers have to start gettign smaller. Call old school or just old, but when did we start needing to know the exact altitide to make our pattern turns at? did this start with hook turns? Am I at "0.7" altitude or 651ft? Am I at 0.6 altitude or 649ft? I'm just not seeing where this exact knowledge/detail is needed/necessary. Are people using the feet markings to flare?? j/k -
Probably should ask a rigger, but I know on PD Reserves, there are 20 checkboxes. After it's either been used or packed 20 times, they expect you to replace it. I don't know if it's required or not, according to the PD literature. That would apply, if he had a PD-R. AFAIK, there's no life limit on either of those components. The reserve is probably getting to the 'well used' part of its life though, I'd expect it has a few weak spots from packing. The container? Well... I've seen a Vector around here from 1989 that was still in pretty good shape, so I guess it depends where its been and who's owned it. It's so you can get pretty precise when you get down to pattern altitude, as opposed to just saying .5 for 500-599' "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message -

Just put it on Alti mode during the climb and dont touch it. It will stay in that display the entire time until you change it back. Also, you can disable logbook and functions like that. Are some people Just not meant to Skydive?
theonlyski replied to dmcculloch's topic in Safety and Training
I was in your shoes a few years ago... Had a backsliding spin of death, once I even helicoptered so bad the AFF-I with me had to get UNDER me (because I was going so slow by that point) and steal my air, then tackle me (by having me fall into him) to grip me again. It took me 3 or 4 tries to get past level 4. I had a dedicated instructor that wouldn't let me sit out for a morning and practice packing, he put me on the first load and wouldn't give up on me even when I was starting to doubt myself. Some how, during one of those jumps, it 'clicked' and I relaxed, everything fell into place. Here I am, a few years later, an AFF-I. Let me tell ya, I almost threw in the towel, but I'm glad I stayed with it. What Dave said is all true, its all about relaxation and that includes relaxing your arms/legs. We've all been there at some point or another. You'll quit flying like a sheet of plywood and once it happens, you will wonder why ya didn't get 'it' before. Changing canopy to a more responsive one.

I still think my Safire2 169 flies better and has nicer openings than the Nitron 170. That being said, I wouldn't be broken hearted to have either in my container. But it will be very hard to find your own gear with a ripcord. I also feel that the transition needs to be properly managed. I fear a licensed jumper may simply try and change to a boc without adequate training. I'm willing to bet a call to almost any manufacturer of sport rigs would end up saying they can modify it. Also, master riggers are legally authorized to modify the deployment method of gear. I have a student Wings h/c at my DZ that is set up for BOC throw out, ripcord and static line (with the change of the dbag). Furthermore, any person attempting to jump unfamiliar gear should take it upon them self to get an in depth 'check out' by someone qualified to give it (rigger, instructor). I know if one of our jumpers showed up to my dz with gear set up for a different deployment method, we would make sure they knew what they were doing before letting them at it. Well, since she's working a crazy schedule, we're down to ~5 times a week, but has been around 10. Matter o fact... I just got out of bed. It would help to let us know what kind of damage the container has and where (pics) as well as the canopy. Reason being: Senior riggers are authorized minor repairs, but if your container is failing in a serious manner, has harness issues or things like that, it would be Master rigger type work. The nose is exposed to speed up the opening and reduce the chance of lineovers. Some reserves were used as mains (and they all even had main canopy bridle attachment points). Not sure what you've heard about the sliders, but most are pretty similar to main sliders, except most if not all the reserves I can remember off the top of my head had brass grommets instead of stainless and weren't collapsible. PD sliders have a hole in them, but many other manufacturers don't. Just another way to skin the cat. If only there were some sort of examiner seminar to bring this up in, coming up soon. Thanks again Matt, for all the help along the way. Still wish I could've taken the course with you... No slack! Referring to me as said asshat? I think that's an incorrect statement to say the least. I came here asking for clarification, not just taking the word of someone as the law. Now that Bill has commented on it, I have it straight from the horses mouth. I also don't think I know it all... far from it actually.
