The only tandem gear I have any interest in packing is my personal Micro Sigma, and it has the newest version of the pin. I don't think I'd even entertain the thought of packing one of the brazed wire 6 pins on a rig. what do if pilot becomes unconscious?
theonlyski replied to 5.samadhi's topic in Safety and Training
I don't think that would be possible. Cell phone umts network can in extreme cases reach 1000m (3000ft). In most cases the network signal is non existant above 300m (1000ft). I've received/sent texts as high as 8k in jump planes, and I've actually held phone conversations around at least 2500' AGL. (my flight headset has a port to plug my iPhone into so... was talking hands free and all ) "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message -
Winner!! Not so fast; I've heard 'Twardo may have a few jumps signed off by Leonardo da Vinci. Word on the street is 'Twardo was da Vinci's static line instructor. Cut away/clear risers vs just firing reserve into the mess. "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message -
One of our regular jumpers, Lee Guilfoyle (C-8 & D-50) I believe he was also IE #7, but I'd have to check on that. Hell of a man! GPS tracking/location for cutaways

How was it activated? What was the cost of the gear (transmitter and receiver)? Who let TC play with electronics? Any pics of it? Didn't notice any on his FB. Safest way to set up a tertiary canopy rig?
theonlyski replied to FrogNog's topic in Gear and Rigging
Well, let's see... find an instructor rated static line or IAD, talk to them about deployment issues in the door. Talk to a rigger and ask for their help, if you're going to be doing it anyways, at least many riggers will usually try to help make it safer. As far as direct bagging it, it's been done... Maybe do a search on here for 'direct bag'. AFF Student general questions
theonlyski replied to Chiemel's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Depends what they're there for. If they want to become a cool skydiver that all their friends are jealous of, they don't usually last long. If they're there because they want a challenge, something that will help them feel more in control of their life, etc... they tend to stick around. I'm almost always relaxed, only time I'm a little nervous is during AFF and Tandem jumps... Those I actually prefer to be a little more on my toes for anyways. That malfunction is in constant debate, and is pretty much one of the scariest ones you could have. Almost always preventable too! For this, talk to your instructors, they covered it in your FJC, and you need to cover it again anyways. Bought my first rig around 40 jumps, first altimeter, goggles and helmet around 15 jumps. Buy used gear when you can, it saves money for jumps! (that and you may decide to change gear not too long after so you don't want to take a big hit on resale of new gear) There's a couple things you can do, but those are only to be taught by your instructors. If you practice the wrong thing and get it set in your mind, you'll just have to waste jumps/time unlearning it. Good luck! Typical skydiver... nobody watching? Go big so they watch, or go where they're watching and THEN go big! "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

Good luck hooker! I actually just got a call about a possible job or two... may be a small step up from where I was back when you and Jo hated me before, but hey, I've been unemployed for 5 months! Most common cause for this (OS independent) would actually be over heating, fans die quite often and its not helped by the 1/4" of dust covering the insides of the computer and heat-sinks. (dirt/dust is also a pretty big killer for power supplies as well) "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message

You don't really need the lens in the helmet to protect yourself from feet/knees/elbows of a spinner, matter of fact, I really doubt they'd provide much real protection anyways. The chin/jaw/forehead is the most important part to cover, and those are already covered with a factory diver. Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9isq7xmNFc Watch that video, lens cracks right in half on the jump... Not something I want happening to me. Wouldn't be hard to attach a small container for the mice to a small round parachute/drogue and rig it so when it hits the ground, it falls apart.
