  2. Why can't you sort by # of views anymore?
  3. Hey Zilla - Do you have to be present to win those great prizes on Sunday? Also what was up with it starting on Fri instead of Today? Kevin
  4. Well my new job is sending me to Zurich in October.. was wanting to do some skydiving - having never been to zurich and not knowing the geography of the place can anyone suggest a place to go, rates, and weather conditions over there? Thanks a bunch! Kevin
  5. Hi - I sent an email to birdman to quesiton some of the measurements on the order form.. got an auto reply from Kim saying they were off in sweden until august something or other... and made a reference to a birdman buddy deal that was going on. I can't seem to find reference to this deal on their website, does anyone know about it? What is it? Kevin
  6. Since I got wacked from my job earlier this summer and didn't get a new one till a few days ago, I opted to not go to WFFC this year and save what little money I had so that I could continue living under a roof.. at any rate, I decided to live vicariously through the WFFC DVD which I "pre-ordered" off the freefall.com website. I've emailed martini shot and called them (left a voicemail) inquiring about how long it would be until the video was done.. i vaguly remember last years took some kinda crazy amount of time to finish.. anyone else had this problem or know the answer? How long do they estimate it taking to finish? I wanna get my boobie fix from WFFC 2002..! :) Kevin http://www.interone.net

  10. Well for those of you who have kept up with my last few posts you know that I have been jobless for the last few months due to the fine former CEO / CFO, etc.. of my company, WorldCom. At any rate, I've been applying non stop to companies going to job fairs and everything else, with no luck of even one interview. Well, two weeks ago I got my first interview with a well established computer security company, they called me in for a second interview the following week (this past week) and said that they would get back to me early next week as to a decision. I have a real good feeling I'll get an offer, they went over benifits and everything. We had formal sitdown interviews with numerous people in the company, went over the job position in detail, etc... Well I guess when it rains it pours, because I had a callback from another company - one that I met at a jobfair. This company is significantly smaller -- only about 100 employees total, only about 15 in my area. They've been around a while, but they are pretty small. The benifits aren't as great and I really didn't get a warm fuzzy about the company. My interview consisted of a phone convo where I went over my resume with someone in another state and then a sit down lunch at a resturant where we talked about the company and what they are doing. They didn't even have me fill out an application, didn't ask for previous salary history or anything -- they already have an offer letter in the mail to me -- over 2X my previous salary. So the question is this --- how do I decide what to take?? I really like the first company, haven't had an offer but like I said, I am pretty sure I will get one. I am next to positive it will be lower than the 2nd company's offer because I gave the 2nd company a higher salary range. The first company seemed more professional, and a more defined job position for me.. the second company seems like they are just trying to hire talent, they went over a lot of stuff I could "fit into" but never really said exactly what I would be doing if I were hired. What do you guys think?? I know money isn't everything.. the first company salary range was about a 10K difference. So if company 1 gave me the high end and company 2 gave me the low end then they would be about equal.
  11. Yeah.. since I'm not longer living there I only get updates from the DZO.. the last time he gave me an update that was what it was :)
  12. Lynette Botha (videographer from GoldCoast) was seriously injured while shooting video a few weeks ago. Lynette's company dropped their short term disability insurance, so as of this week she has no pay coming in and there is a mountain of hospital bills since she passed the cap on her insurance. Lynette's Bio: Lynette Botha Freefall Videographer : Lynette Botha, originally from South Africa, began jumping 6 years ago. She is a "D" license jumper with over 960 jumps to her credit. Lynette began working as a videographer about a year ago and has provided first time jumpers the thrill of seeing themselves in freefall. Lynette loves working with students and providing them with footage of their "thrill of a lifetime". The thing she likes about Gold Coast..."the friendly, laid back atmosphere and lots of work!" Any donation is greatly appreciated and will be very helpful towards her long road to recovery. To see a picture of Lynnette & donate please visit http://www.goldcoastskydivers.com/lynette.html
  13. did you guys hear about the fighter jet crashing at an airshow in um... i can't remember what country it was.. it is dubbed as the worst airshow accident ever, killed a bunch of people...
  14. Was reading on slashdot about this nut who is building his own rocket in his backyard to travel to the moon and back. On one of the interviews slashdot asked: Say you are successful, and I hope you are. What's next? Do you try it again only higher? Also any plans of donating your rocket to the Smithsonian? This would definitely be considered Air & Space history and be worthy for all to view. Or on the other hand after are you looking for monetary gain? Something like pay 12 bucks to see Rocket guy's Rocket? And his response was :) I want to move on to a commercial launch operation which would allow a "for profit" venture to begin producing money for future development funds. The first step is "Rocket Skydiving" -- simple, catapult launched giant water rockets that can take a load of skydivers to 15,000 feet in under a minute. This would be safer than airplanes. As time progressed, we would introduce bigger and higher flying rockets, which would eventually allow non-skydivers access to 80-100 thousand foot high flights in small winged return vehicles with pilots. I would be happy to donate my capsule to Smithsonian. "Safer than airplanes" Wonder what the exit would be like on one of these?
  15. This question is for people who might know the operations of a hot air balloon, i'm sure Billvon will probably be able to answer this. At any rate, what all does a balloon pilot have to do to take off (rules wise?) -- can they just go set up shop anywhere they want as long as it is far away from airports and whatnot? My next question is, what does it take when someone is jumping from the balloon? I.e. can I go hunt down a balloon pilot and pay them or bribe them in some way to jump from their balloon? Just curious
  16. Um.. can we not say appeal? :)
  17. OKay - just saw it. For those of you who didn't, it was video from an actual skydive somewhere in Penn I believe. A jumper exits a cessana with a x-way (I think a 4 way) and his jumpsuit (foot) gets caught on the step of the cessena putting him in tow with the aircraft. (Can't believe the jumpsuit was that strong but hey, skydivers make good shit .. ) Anyway, they ended up landing the plane with the guy hanging underneath the wheel (yes folks that means he hit the ground first).. did it on a grass strip and he walked away with minor injuries. The question I have is this: They stated that the skydiver had a safety device (AAD) which would deploy the chute if it got below 750 feet going faster than 88 mph. They made a big deal how the pilot had to slow the aircraft down below the 88 mph in order to keep the chute from opening. How does the AAD determine speed? I guess if the skydiver is hanging straight down and the wind is hitting him at 88 MPH then the AAD calculates 88 MPH correct? Or does it somehow figure out vertical speed so if the plane isn't going 88 MPH down then it is okay? My initial reaction was that the plane had to have a vertical speed of 88 MPH in order to activate it, but when I started thinking about it I guess the AAD has no way of known if the wind hitting it is due to a skydiver hanging outside on the step or not. Anyway, is that skydiver a DZ.com member?
  18. Hey quick guys put it on TBS and watch the show that is called worst case scenerio.. at some point in the show they are going to show what you do when a "skydive goes wrong" -- i'm interested to see how they screw this one up. On the "what do you do if you have to jump from an 8 story building" bit they showed jumping into a dumpster and landing on your back.. what do you guys think about that? Seems to me you should PLF that landing not try and endup hitting on your back first.. I'm taping it so I might can grab some video off it later. Kevin
  19. Well my jeep was dieing on me.. was time for something new. I had previously done a lot of EMS volunteer work, we were able to respond in our cars -- the police package on the car came with a bunch of electrical things that were nice for wiring radios and computers and whatnot (which I had in my jeep) so I figured it was a nice pick. Found a great deal on it, with low milage so it all worked out. It's fun to drive and people get out of your way.. hehe..
  20. Hum.. bringing up an old thread.. I was trying to sort by number of views and can't seem to figure out how to do it. I can search by number of posts, but for some reason didn't see this thread up there as well. Just trying to figure out what the stats are on this thread. Sorry for the shameless bump ;)
  21. Well i think i'm stuck here for the time being - I'm doing the university thing here.. and I'm trying to line myself up for those 3 - letter government orgs when I graduate, so I'm in a good area for what I want to do. It's much better than Mississippi where I was Overall I'm not bitter over the whole thing, I'm glad to base jump off of worldcom before it crashes (it's too low for a normal skydive now) hehe.. me and my skydiving analogies.
  22. Per your request - attached is my resume. kevin_orkin.doc
  23. NOVA and DC are the areas i'm looking. Computer security is my expertise (tracking hackers, penetration testing, etc) ... Guess i'll start looking in the paper. And btw, I did get laid off
  24. Well as some of you may or may not know, I have been working for the ever so famous WorldCom for the past 6 years. Today is the day for those who have not heard, the big layoff day. I will find out in 1 hr if I am here to stay or here to go.. (I'm pretty sure i'm going).. I've been trying to find a job for a month now and it's quite tough.. amazing for someone wiht as much computer security experience as me.. ho hum. I remember someone else going through this a while back, I've been checking dice, monster, flipdog, careerbuilder, and hotjobs - anyone know any other hints for the DC Metro area? Thanks for your help! Kevin
