Lev Parnas got 20 months. https://www.npr.org/2022/06/29/1108635408/lev-parnas-sentenced-20-months

Yeah, but many of them were incomplete with me.

You know full well if the 'government' was directed by Muslims, those people would have a shit fit about "Sharia Law". And pass laws prohibiting it. And ban mosques. And prohibit headscarves on women. If it's being directed by Christians, then it's all ok because that's what God wants.

The Supreme Court is our biggest problem
wolfriverjoe replied to JoeWeber's topic in Speakers Corner
So if someone runs out to the 50 yard line at the end of a football game and starts banging a donkey, can the use the Supreme Court's definition of 'private & quiet' as a defense? Asking for a friend. -
Hi Jerry, I like to think I make the world a little bit better place for those around me. My job is one that was considered 'essential' during the shut downs. But that's true of millions of others, too. And when compared against the damage I do to the environment and the resources I consume, I don't think I bring a "net positive" to the earth. And, back to the original topic, I've heard since last week that places that restrict abortion have higher rates of infanticide than places that have good access to safe abortions. You know, the kid's going to die, it's just a matter of when. However, I can't find good data on that. Just that infant mortality (all causes) is higher in places without good access to abortion services. Particularly among younger mothers. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7312072/

Seen on FB: Every Muslim teacher in the US should start leading their classes in prayer. Watch how fast that shit would be illegal again. -
Oh wow. I've seen some REALLY stupid crap. I don't know if I've ever seen anything THAT dumb. The list of reasons that will never happen is quite long. One of the top reasons is that something that big would likely never get off the ground. Weight increases as a cube function with size. Another top reason is price. There's a reason that the only nuke powered vehicles (ships & subs) are military. They don't have to answer to shareholders about how much they cost to build and operate. The aerodynamics of that thing are just plain silly. Not including the ridiculousness of not retracting landing gear that's only going to be used every few years. Oh my.

Oh, I've considered myself an 'old guy' for some time. A number of years ago, I ended up with a cold at SDC Summerfest. So I sat around a lot. Fortunately, the 'crusty old guys' had a tent set up, and spent a lot of time sitting around swapping stories. I was both proud and a bit sad that I fit right in, and even had a couple good stories to share too. One of them told me that 'crusty old guy' is a compliment in skydiving. It means that you've hung around long enough (and survived) to earn the title. My 20th sky birthday is coming up in August.

As an old 'rock & roller', I have absolutely no clue who the young ladies are, or any idea what material they have out. But Joe's absolutely correct. That was AWESOME

I've voted mostly R for my entire adult life. I had never voted D for a major (national) candidate... Until the last election. I have absolutely no plans on voting R again. EVER. Dogcatcher? Nope. Garbage commissioner? Nope (not that we have that one locally).

Would it for real? Read the last line of the 2nd paragraph and it will answer the questions at the beginning of the 1st one. (Helpful hint: Yes. Those 'sanctimonious hypocrites' will oppose anything the Ds want to do. They will also do what ever they can to restrict the rights of anyone who isn't a straight white male.)

Hi Jerry, He's not trying to make any point. He's trying to get people to respond by pissing them off. Nobody has to respond to him. I do wish the mods would enforce the rules on trolling, but I'm not one of them, so I don't get to make that decision. Not unlike the DB Cooper thread, which I found very interesting for a very long time. It got clogged up with trolls, fools and people with agendas. So I gave up.

Well, not exactly. It meets THEIR needs. It gives the rich and powerful control over everyone else. -
I don't know about that. Abortion rights were destroyed by the SC. And gun rights were upheld. But the Senate passed a very weak gun control bill. It will likely become law. I wonder how many of the Rs that voted in favor of that will make it through the primary process (some of the congresscritters already have - or haven't). The R voters are pretty harsh towards those who 'take away' their gun rights. One of the reasons gun control has been such a hard sell in DC is because all of them remember the 94 mid terms. The 'assault weapons' bill went through. There was a hell of an outcry and both houses fell to the Rs. Arguably the beginning of the fall of the democracy (that's when Gingrich got to be Speaker). It wouldn't surprise me a whole lot to see a lot of the 'gun rights' Rs go against the party in the mid terms. Either 3rd party or not voting at all.

US Senate votes 65-33 in favour of Gun Control Bill

Well, in a 'not terribly surprising' development, there are candidates for sheriff in parts of Colorado running on a 'constitutional sheriff' platform. Where they get to decide which laws are 'constitutional' and which aren't. Obviously, they won't enforce the ones they think are 'unconstitutional'. You know, like gun laws. https://coloradosun.com/2022/06/22/colorado-constitutional-sheriff-races/?pico=clean&utm_source=The+Colorado+Sun+Newsletters&utm_campaign=SUNRISER_20220624&utm_medium=email -
Well, Jefferson is quoted as saying "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants." It comes from a letter to the son of John Adams. https://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/tree-liberty-quotation It has a very interesting and insightful sentence about the idea of the 'big lie'.

In most cases, the historians decide much later when the 'end' actually happened. In most cases, the 'end' happened without the people who were actually there realizing it. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if historians in the future declare that the 'end of American democracy' happened at some point prior to our present. When McConnel abdicated his duty to hold hearings for Garland's SC appointment is one possibility. There are others.

Don't forget Matthew Broderick's accident. It was in Ireland, and two people died. Broderick got a fine of 175. Not sure what currency it was in. Article says dollars, but I don't know if I trust it. https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/pictures/jennifer-grey-matthew-brodericks-tragic-car-crash-what-theyve-said/

Wait a minute... George Soros is behind the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Wow. -
Well, that's the problem. THOSE PEOPLE shouldn't be able to be 'less oppressed' or 'more free'. They should go back in the closet where they belong. Where the 'good people' won't have to see them. Or worry about 'them' corrupting 'the children'. That's for coaches to do. And priests.

Right. Heat waves across the US. And Europe. And Asia. But THAT'S not 'global'. -
The Supreme Court is our biggest problem
wolfriverjoe replied to JoeWeber's topic in Speakers Corner
The problem with "illegal immigrants" (they are here illegally), is largely imaginary. Remember the 'refugee convoys' that were coming? How many actually showed up? The claims of 'open borders' is utter bullshit. The idea that illegals can come into the US and get instant 'government assistance' (especially 'while veterans are homeless and starving') is just as bad. But the xenophobes, even the ones on here, don't care about truth. Or reality. They just want someone to blame. -
It's been sad and scary since November of 2016. It hasn't been funny at all, even though there have been a lot of jokes about it. What's probably the scariest (at least to me) about the Jan 6 insurrection attempt is how many people are dismissing it, ignoring it, pretending it didn't happen, pretending it wasn't serious, all that. As I've said a bunch of times, it would have been very interesting to see what would have happened had the mob gotten their hands on Pence.
-
Not sure if this is the best place for this, but it's the closest to the top - How can you be certain Trump was behind the insurrection attempt? Because it failed. Not mine, but definitely worth sharing.
-
Well, the alt-right needs a boogey-man. Someone to hate, someone to blame, someone to be afraid of. Of course, they refuse to 'live in fear.'
