My bet is that most of the people here are pretty civil in real life. There are actually mostly nice people in the world, if you get to know them. I doubt that a lot of discussions we as a group have in real life are much like some of the nastiness here. It depends. Far, far too many variables. Most of them depend on what level of skill the attacker demonstrates. And what level of threat he poses. The use of force has to fit the situation, and I have to be flexible enough to allow for that. "Stuff" isn't worth anyone's life. Even a bad guy (mainly because of the hassle that comes with even the most clear-cut self defense killing). But unfortunately, the bad guy isn't always satisfied with just your stuff.
