Mark Schlatter Thesis???
wolfriverjoe replied to skydived19006's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
And that's what it is. The Slyde vs FAA & USPA Tyranny movement, and all you have to do is sing it the next time it comes around on the guitar. Rweider's link gives the info. For those not patient enough - Mark was unhappy that the FAA wanted to run a background check on his pilot for a demo. He complained to the USPA and FAA and was unhappy with the results. Further complaints were intrepereted as threats by the FAA and resulted in an investigation by the FBI, and his subsequent boot from USPA. And then it got weird. Thanks. Yes, I had to smile. They originally did that on Sesame Street, IIRC. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

What to do during a mass shooting?
wolfriverjoe replied to downwardspiral's topic in Speakers Corner
It tells me that there were 2 such incidents in the past 2 days. They are quite rare, but they do happen. When they do happen they are all over the news because they are so spectacular and so rare. .... They are what??? You must be living on the moon or just kidding. Shootings of every kind do happen in the US on a regular basis. No, I'm serious and I live in the US. How many occurred in the last year?? The last 2 years?? The last 40 years?? Although This Link is from last April and doesn't include the latest two, it shows 21 incidents over the last 40+ years. You are more likely to get attacked by a shark, and far, far more likely to get struck by lightning than to be involved in one of these attacks. No, Harley Riders are fags. It says so in the dictionary. Webster changed it. That was one of the better episodes in the past few seasons. And every time I saw a H-D since Wednesday night I have to grin. No. I don't say anything. And the Harley guys seem to be taking it in strideH-D Forum I love how they think that Matt and Trey got the idea from how they were treated at a dealer "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Fixed it for ya I grew up on Sesame Street. I remember when Oscar was orange, and Gordon had hair. Most of my basic Spanish came from there too. A while back, my mom and older sister went to NYC. My sister knew someone on the crew and was able to visit the set. One of my mom's prized photos is the one of her sitting on the steps of 123 Sesame Street. My bet is that most of the people here are pretty civil in real life. There are actually mostly nice people in the world, if you get to know them. I doubt that a lot of discussions we as a group have in real life are much like some of the nastiness here. Problem is you don't get to know much about a person if your only interaction is a web forum. Makes it easy to be a bit snippy, and for some downright assholish. Agreed. And add to that the security of knowing that the person you are attacking has no way of actually getting to you and the abilty to become "assholish" increases (I don't know if that's an acutal word, but I really like it

It tells me that there were 2 such incidents in the past 2 days. They are quite rare, but they do happen. When they do happen they are all over the news because they are so spectacular and so rare. AggieDave - you have real training, what would you recommend for civilians? And MrDree is right, if you are armed, be very careful not to target another armed citizen and not to become a target of one. Friendly fire isn't. Wild Bill Hickock reportedly shot one of his own deputies who came towards him with a gun out just after Hickock was attacked. The deputy was coming to Hickock's aid, but was seen as a threat and dealt with. The surprise element in one of these situations can be paralyzing. But (just like our own EPs) planning, practicing and being aware of your surroundings can help. (Jeff Cooper called it "condition Yellow). If I am caught in one, take cover, escape and evade, fight back. Just like in the disarm thread, it depends on what my options are then and there, and how I react. I am in the habit of being aware of alternate exits from most places I am in (stores, restauraunts, ect). I also prefer to sit where I can keep an eye on the door when I go out to eat. Paranoid? Maybe a little. Worth it in one of these rare situations? Again, like in skydiving, chance of situation occurring combined with potential consequences if it does occur combined with effort/cost of countermeasures. The Point Break one was a bit over the top. They usually do a pretty good job of explaining the science behind it. I like the early (first season) better, but they are still a lot of fun. I have more fun with the silly banter (How do you attach a microphone to a duck? Duck tape!). My favorite "guest" is retired FBI explosives guy Frank Doyle. (While the junior mythbusters were mixing nitroglycerine: "Why are you standing over there Frank? Because I don't want to blow up") Off the top of my head: Exploding Pants Cement Mixer Blow Up My Parent's Car Hot Water Heater Tow Truck Cable Are Elephants Afraid of Mice? Getting Out of a Sinking Car (that was really creepy) JATO on a Chevy Impala (both the one in the first episode and the revisit) All Time: Chicken Gun Revisit. After proving that there isn't any more energy in a frozen chicken than a thawed one, they came back to it in a later episode and made their own reinforced windows and found the penetration of the frozen one was way more. The expression on Adam's face (they didn't show the damage until later) was priceless. "Well, that's definitely a result". "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Skepticism Regarding Unattributed Comments in the Media
wolfriverjoe replied to champu's topic in Speakers Corner
It depends on the news outlet publishing the anonymous quote, and to a lesser extent the reporter doing the quoting. I don't follow the news the way I used to, but there were certain papers/news networks/reporters who had a track record of getting good information that was later confirmed by named sources after the story broke and was being confirmed. You don't have a non-partisan bone in your body, do you? Naah, he's just aware of how biased the media is against guns. Even Fox News. Although "If It Bleeds, It Leads" is their mantra, the amount of justified, defensive shootings reported in the major media is very small. There have even been a couple school "rampage" shootings that were stopped by armed citizens (Pearl Mississipi was ended by the principal retrieving a pistol from his car and San Diego was stopped by a janitor doing the same, IIRC) that was never mentioned in the major media. They love to show the anti-gunners crying about the "return to the old west" and "shooting each other over car accidents" when carry permit laws are being debated, but rarely mention the (usual) drop in crime rate or the complete lack of those dire predicitions coming true. Would you try to disarm someone on the street?
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Speakers Corner
Yep, that's the line I was taught. It might mean spending a night in jail until my lawyer can arrive (and will mean spending a bunch on the lawyer too), that's why it is a last resort. Wow. Pale in comparison? Yep. What the conquistadors did to the Incas and Aztecs was horrific. And even the Nazis didn't make the Jews walk hundreds of miles to the concentration camps (search "Trail of Tears"). The crap we teach the kids even in high school is really slanted and sanitized. The ones here aren't that intrusive, except for the stupid Subaru one. I figure that they pay for it, so I leave them up. I even click on them now and then to keep the "click through" rate up. Would you try to disarm someone on the street?
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes, but there is a hell of a difference between a small dude with a little knife and a big guy holding a loaded .357 in a way that I can't get to it. And keep in mind that "Deadly Force" will have to be justified to the cops, prosecutor, and perhaps a judge and jury. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Would you try to disarm someone on the street?
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in Speakers Corner
It depends. Far, far too many variables. Most of them depend on what level of skill the attacker demonstrates. And what level of threat he poses. The use of force has to fit the situation, and I have to be flexible enough to allow for that. "Stuff" isn't worth anyone's life. Even a bad guy (mainly because of the hassle that comes with even the most clear-cut self defense killing). But unfortunately, the bad guy isn't always satisfied with just your stuff. Story Here Give them what they want, get killed anyway And off to SC we go!! Edit to add: And it depends on what my realistic options are. If dude is already pointing a loaded gun at me, in a manner that disarming isn't feasible (it's called weapon retention training) then I'm screwed. I can get a gun out and on target fast, but not that fast. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 75% of Young Americans Unfit for Military Duty

Note: I selectively quoted so that the part I care about doesn't get lost. It isn't about differentiating it or wearing it on their sleeve, it's about having to hide who you really are to avoid getting thrown out. This is actually kind of funny. I'm straight, but most of my posts here in SC this week are about gay rights. It's more of a tirade against inolerant bullies (Note intolerant, not homophobic) than anything else I guess. Not to imply that Gawain is intolerant or a bully, just a general comment on my "gay rights" stand of late. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." #1 No. If you study the history of our (White Europeans) conquest of the "New World", you will see the horrific things that were done. Things that make Darfour, Rawanda, the Balkans, Cambodia's "Killing Fields" and even the Nazi concentration camps pale in comparison. There was a long argument that Indians weren't even human because the Bible didn't mention "red" skinned people. I'd much prefer reparations to the indians before freed slaves. #2 Some might. Just like the Amish, the "simpler" life has it's supporters. Most wouldn't. Eskimoes use snowmobiles and outboard motorboats. There are probably hundreds of other examples but that's the only one I can think of fast. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Those two documents are deeply connected. Yes, they are. But there is a huge difference between the D of I and the Constitutuion. The best analogy I can come up with is a business "Misson Statement" and the bylaws which govern how the corporation operates. And the "inalienable rights" are guaranteed by our creator, not named. There's a big difference there. To the best of my knowledge, the only things directly named by the creator were the 10 Commandments. (or 15 if you believe Mel BrooksYouTube).
