  1. Santos is under investigation. Yet he went on Fox and said his lies weren't 'false', they were 'debatable'. https://www.npr.org/2022/12/29/1145950468/n-y-rep-elect-george-santos-is-being-investigated-for-lying-about-his-past
  2. Kinda, but I think Mel would look at that and go: "Nah. That's too stupid. Nobody would be dumb enough to try that".
  3. Thanks for the correction. So in general, nobody but the military and record attempts goes much above 51k.
  4. There doesn't seem to be a rule. I looked. If anyone can find an actual 'unpressurized aircraft altitude limitation' rule, I'd appreciate it. I dug around a bit a while back, and it seems that unpressurized aircraft don't go much above 25k. It reads like it's a 'best practice' that everyone follows, rather than an actual FAR. In general, nobody but the military goes above 50k. There's a bunch of different reasons for that. The Concorde went up to 60k, but it had a few reasons for that. Less dense air meant it could go faster up higher. It was also able to do emergency descents (down to survivable altitudes in case of depressurization) faster than 'normal' airliners.
  5. How often do you think gender reassignment surgery happens on minors?
  6. I'm not entirely sure I would have liked to see him hang. But I would have LOVED to see the mob grab him, drag him out to their gallows and put the noose around his neck. To watch his reactions & behavior when he realized that his 'supporters' were going to lynch him. You know, like they did to "those people". I would guess that there were Secret Service snipers around. There always are. I'd also guess that as soon as it became clear the VP was in serious danger, the people holding him prisoner would have started dropping. And that is, of course, if the mob had been able to get him away from his immediate protective detail. I'd also guess that they would have opened fire on anyone who got close. I seem to remember that the detail had called & texted family to 'say goodbye', expecting to have to fight for their principals.
  7. Meh. I've said for a LOOOOONG time that it would have been really awesome to see the mob get their hands on him.
  8. To be fair, the courts & prosecutors have always been able to engage in legal action. They've just chosen not to. The Justice Dept policy on not charging a sitting President is just that. Policy. There are ZERO court rulings on it. In many ways its a good policy. But it has its shortcomings, especially when the President engages in such obvious criminal behavior. That policy, however, only applies to a sitting President. Not a former President. Ford pardoned Nixon to prevent that sort of prosecution. As I get older, I understand more and more why he did it. I still don't agree with it, but I understand. The prosecution of a former President is unprecedented. It's never happened. However, theft of classified materials, blatant corruption (including selling out to foreign powers) and refusal to participate in the peaceful transfer of power is ALSO unprecedented. Which is why the prosecution needs to happen. As has been said, "if there are no consequences for that behavior, it will happen again."
  9. I have a funny feeling that the rest of the classified stuff the Saudis were expecting has been seized by the FBI. Jared was summoned to explain why they aren't getting all they were promised. Presuming they were dumb enough to trust a promise from Trump.
  10. Right. Friction burns. In addition to the tears from anything 'poking up' on the guy wires. That's what I'm seeing with that damage.. But: #1 - I'm no expert. #2 - It's hard to tell from those pics.
  11. I had to dig through my memory, and figure out what words to search. It took a couple tries. A couple 'long lost' names in here. Some that aren't missed, some that are. The actual poll disappeared, so you have to get the context of the choices from the posts in the thread. And it was 500 votes, not a million.
  12. Interesting story. Dude had a long prison sentence for murder. Wagner went around offering amnesty to anyone who'd sign up to fight. Dude signed up, went to Ukraine and immediately surrendered. Said publicly that he'd fight for Ukraine against Russia. Somehow or another, he got exchanged back to Russia. Somehow not surprising. Murderers & traitors aren't super popular people, even among the folks they are 'defecting' to. So after he gets back home, the Wagner Group (not Russian authorities, apparently) put him against a brick wall and cave his skull in with a sledge hammer. Well, the Wagner Group isn't known for it's kindness or humanitarian actions.
  13. I remember a looooong time ago, a regular won a prize that was a trip of some sort (a cruise?). She put up a poll asking who she should take. I made the suggestion to then-mod DSE that he should use his 'mod super-powers' to add himself to the poll choices and give himself a million votes. An hour or so later, one of the options on the poll became "DSE" and, not terribly surprisingly, he had... One million votes. Do you believe that Musk won't do something like this? Note: Also not terribly surprisingly, DSE didn't get to go on the trip.
  14. It might be a possibility, but not a likely one. North Korea is denying claims that they are supplying Russia with artillery shells. Russia denies any claims that North Korea offered troops. North Korea has said they'd like to send construction workers to the Russian held areas to help rebuild (this was before Russia started suffering major losses). While North Korea was one of the very few nations to recognize Russia's 'annexation' of Ukrainian territory, I don't think they'd go as far as sending troops. Not yet anyway.
  15. It's an amazing and potentially 'world changing' accomplishment. But it's only the first step. They've only done it once. While the energy put into the reaction was less than the energy generated, the energy required to power the lasers and all the other ancillary equipment was far more than the energy generated. It was fairly small scale. To generate significant amounts of energy, they'll have to find a way to make it bigger. And yes, the 'article' is far more a 'patting themselves on the back' press release than an actual 'news article'. But for this sort of thing, that's where it starts. The Manhattan Project attained the first sustained nuclear (fission) reaction. https://news.uchicago.edu/explainer/first-nuclear-reactor-explained#:~:text=At 3%3A53 p.m.%2C they, wrapper of the empty bottle. As noted in the article, it took 9 years for them to figure out how to generate electricity from nuclear fission. First they have to do it again. Then they have to scale it up and make the 'preliminary' stuff more efficient. There's a ton of things they have to figure out, and some of them may not be achievable. In any case, I doubt we'll see fusion generated power in my lifetime, and I kinda doubt we'll ever see a "Mr Fusion" providing 1.21 Gigawatts. But hey, if you had said 25 years ago that everyone would have a smart phone, you likely would have been laughed at. So we'll just have to see.
  16. One thing to remember is that many of the Russian conscripts are coming from the far East. They are ethnic Asians, not Europeans. Lots and lots of potential racial tension there. Add in the fact that the Russians are largely untrained and under-equipped, heading off to be cannon fodder, while the Belarussians are better trained, better equipped and may or may not be going to war, there's a lot of 'problem areas'.
  17. For those who are too young to get this: https://www.google.com/search?q=the+new+phone+books+are+here&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS910US910&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjMiqKB6oP8AhXxk4kEHTMaCM8Q_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1536&bih=760&dpr=1.25#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:fefc0b2a,vid:kOTDn2A7hcY
  18. You could 'opt-out' of being listed in the phone book. You could NOT opt out of getting it. Sort of like getting Parachutist, the publishers set ad rates based on how many copies are distributed. Phone books generated HUGE ad revenue.
  19. It's abundantly clear that 'some animals are more equal than others'. Musk decides who the rules apply to and who they don't. Nazis? Fine. Hate speech? Fine. Mocking Musk? Ban The appeal of this place (for me) has always been the 'fair and even-handed' actions and attitudes of the mods. With few exceptions, the same rules applied to everyone.
  20. What do you mean? I figured out that I liked girls in 6th or 7th grade. It wasn't a 'choice' or a 'decision'. It was a realization. For a kid to realize they like the same sex (or the opposite one), or to come to the understanding that they don't 'fit' in the body they were born with isn't all that different. To take permanent, life altering measures in that direction is not appropriate, but it also isn't something that happens often. The key is accurate, professional diagnosis and treatment. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/what-medical-treatments-do-transgender-youth-get Note: I have a small amount of personal experience in this. My former nephew is now my niece. She is in no way, shape or form 'confused'. And her parents (my sister and her husband) are far from 'enabling'. The transition is entirely hormones & hormone blockers, which is not permanent. They have an amazing therapist and an excellent endocrinologist. My (now) niece is far better, far happier and far more stable as a female that ever before. This is NOT any sort of 'fantasy' or 'fashion statement'.
  21. I didn't read beyond the abstract on the first page, but 'shelter euthanization' is often healthy animals put down due to a lack of space & resources. I volunteer at a local cat rescue, and we have taken in a LOT of what we call 'euthanization transfers' in the past year. These are mostly healthy cats who are going to be put down at other shelters. Often older, 'not pretty' (scars, missing limbs, ect), these are cats with less chance of quick adoption. We have a friend who is in contact with shelters all over the region. She will get in touch with our staff and tell us 'there are 8 cats in Chicago that will be put down on Tuesday. Can you take any?' If we have the space, we take them, get them evaluated and up for adoption. Some get good homes, some stay at the shelter until they pass away. The vet on staff at the rescue is adamant about spay/neuter. She has posted on FB repeatedly about how hard it is on shelter workers to put down healthy animals due to space & resources, and then see backyard breeders trying to sell puppies & kittens. That's a LOT different than ending the suffering of an animal that will die soon anyway.
  22. Orange glaze would be much more appropriate. https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tLP1TewMMioMjc3YHRg8OJPKU3OVkhUyFHPL0rMS08FAII7COk&q=duck+a+l'orange&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS910US910&oq=Duck+a+L&aqs=chrome.1.0i131i355i433i512j46i131i433i512j69i57j0i512j46i512j0i512l5.7214j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
  23. Yeah, there you go using facts again. The simple reality is that they absolutely refuse to believe that their hateful rhetoric has ANYTHING to do with this, or any other attack. They then have to create some sort of 'fairy tale' (pun not intended) that the Alt-Right attacker, who was fed all the lies and fantasies about Pelosi 'destroying' the country, instead was a 'gay prostitute'. They then deny that they are 'programmed'.
  24. 5th point of attachment? In all seriousness, the whole press conference at Helsinki showed pretty clearly who was in charge of that situtaion. Of course, Trump came home, and without Putin anywhere near, acted 'big & tough. But his performance in the presence of his 'owner' was pretty clear.
