Meh... That picture is the ONLY good picture of me ever taken and it looks NOTHING like me... Remi will vouch for the fact that I totally fit the "bland accountant" profile/stereotype... I beg to differ. You have posted some very attractive pics. The one of you on the horse is the first that comes to mind, and I seem to remember a Vampire outfit too. I (and Ryoder and all your other stalkers) are still waiting for pics of you in both the French Maid outfit and the motorcycle leathers. Seriously, if you want to keep the skeeters off, the only really effective repellents are the ones that have DEET in them. And that's some reasonably nasty stuff. I know people that swear by mild overdoses of vitamin B-12. The excess comes out in your sweat, and is supposed to irritate the feet of the mosquitos. No scientific proof, though. I agree with Amazon that any spray you use to kill them (foggers and such) do more harm than good. I have a bat house in my garden (on a post). You can find plans very easily. I also have toads in my yard (have to watch out when mowing the lawn) and spiders in my basement. Bats, toads and spiders may be ugly, but anything that eats that many skeeters is a friend of mine and welcome in my yard. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And the defendants will be represented by Dewey, Cheatem and Howe, the law firm that sponsors Car Talk on NPR (listen to the close of their show for a whole list of these kind of names). You would have if you were jumping in the 60's; it was a known 'fact' back then. JerryBaumchen What is the supposed result of not "setting the lines" properly? I've heard the story that you are supposed to do it, and that it isn't true, but I've never heard why you should do it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Bingo. If they were at all interested in "Health & Safety" as they claim, then why don't the add these requirements to any surgery or procedure that is similar to an abortion? There are a lot of outpatient procedures that are as risky if not more so, but they don't put these requirements on them. Go figure. If there aren't safe and legal options for women, then the women will find other options. Not necessarily safe and probably not legal. That is where the "back alley butchers" will come in. When I find myself in a situation like yours, I ask 2 questions. #1 - How did it happen? #2 - Why didn't I catch it? I try to figure out what mistake was made to create the error in the first place. Was I distracted partway through? Was I in too much of a hurry? Do I really understand what I'm doing with it? Then I try to figure out why my safety checks didn't catch it. Did I get complacent? Was I in too much of a hurry? Were my checks cursory or did I really check? Are the checks adequate, or do I need to change them? I haven't seen you address either of these questions. All I see is that you are adding "Tug on the chest strap" to your checks. And I'm not sure that's really going to change much. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Thought I Was Gonna Die. In freefall with nothing but a silkworm and a sewing maching... Seriously - To the OP: Do you have any idea how your chest strap got that way? I never put it on partway. If I start threading it through the buckle, it goes through correctly. I don't put it partway through and then stop. The same is true for everything on the rig. I don't leave my legs straps loose. If I've got the rig on, it's on right. Also, you have added "Tug on strap" to your checks to make sure it is on correctly. Do you think that you checked it visually and didn't notice it was not correct? And last, the suggestion is to do the "3 Checks of 3s" (3 rings, 3 straps, 3 handles) 3 different times. Putting it on, before boarding the plane, before exit. Do you follow that? It would mean that you missed it twice, after putting it on and before boarding (you were in the process of boarding when the pilot noticed). I agree that it's a bit hyperbolic, but I also understand how it can feel when you have a serious scare like that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I think the "continue" is in dispute. Watching a few minutes of this trial standing in line at work for coffee, while the defense attorney was up, definitely bought that into context for me. He was on neighborhood watch, in a neighborhood that had been robbed enough times that the folks set up a neighborhood watch, with the help of local law enforcement. Ok, why did GZ get out of the car, if not to continue to follow TM? Neighborhood watch doesn't have any arrest powers (over and above ordinary citizens). The cops will tell the NW people to watch and call, to not put themselves into confrontational situations. So will any firearms instructor or attorney who does self defense cases. Did you catch the testimony of the 22ish year police vet the defense had? He pretty much nailed the self defense claim for Zimmerman. No, not following every minute of it. If he can show that all the elements are there, then he will be found not guilty. And there have been several cases in Florida where the "unwilling participant" element has been absent, yet the self defense claim stood. I don't agree with that, but I'm not in charge. IL legislature overrides governor to pass CCW
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
16 hours is a long class. For Wisconsin and Minnesota, the class runs 4-6. And it covers everything it needs to. I don't know what the requirements for the IL permit classes are, but I can see that it would be a barrier, both from a financial standpoint and an opportunity standpoint (not only do you have to pay for it, you have to find time to attend it). Although, I know a couple instructors that will offer a "sliding scale" for the course fee for people who can't afford the class fee (normal fee is around $125). If you are asking how it can be manslaughter, but not 2nd Degree Murder, then it all boils down to intent. Did GZ intend to kill TM? I believe not. That pretty much rules out 2nd Degree. But it can easily be "not self defense", but not intentional. That is where manslaughter comes in. Usually "Voluntary Manslaughter", but "Involuntary" is also a possibility. I've held the opinion that this was never a case of 2nd Degree Murder, it was a case of Voluntary Manslaughter, and the claim of self defense was invalid (basically a vigilante situation that turned deadly). The issue with self defense (and the one a lot of people are missing completely) is that there are several elements to a claim of self defense. "Fear of Death or Great Bodily Injury" is one of them. But not the only one. All of them must be present for a claim of self defense to stand up in a court of law. As currently taught, it is also necessary for the threat to be immediate, for no lesser force to be adequate, and for the claimant to be an unwilling participant. (the old way was an "unavoidable situation." Basically the same thing.) I don't believe that GZ intended to "hunt down and kill" TM, as has been suggested by the agitators. I believe his motive was to stop what he thought was a criminal. But TM has not been shown to be involved in any criminal activity at that time (I am treating TM's prior record the same as GZ's for this- irrelevant). And GZ willingly got out of his car to continue to follow TM after TM apparently tried to elude the "creepy-ass-cracker" he noticed following him. GZ deliberately put himself into the situation. As I have said before, if the defense can separate GZ following TM from TM attacking GZ (assuming GZ's version is the truth), then the self defense claim will stand. If the prosecution can keep the entire situation as one incident (from GZ first spotting TM to the shooting), then the correct charge is Voluntary Manslaughter. He deliberately put himself into a situation that ended in the death of TM. Another point that is being missed is that the claim of self defense often has to be proven. It's not that GZ has to prove himself innocent. It's that GZ clearly shot an unarmed TM, who was apparently doing nothing but walking home from the store. If GZ can't show that all of the necessary elements of a claim of self defense were present, then his claim shouldn't stand. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." IL legislature overrides governor to pass CCW
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
The city government in Chicago has been doing everything it can to prevent it's citizens from obtaining pistols ever since the Supreme Court decision. The NRA has taken them to court several times, and won every time. And Chicago keeps throwing up new restrictions. I believe what Normiss is referring to is that to get a pistol ownership permit (not a carry permit), the city requires a minimum of training, including a certain amount of live fire... But prohibits firing ranges inside city limits. It's not that you have to leave the city to get a gun. It's that you are unable to meet the "reasonable restrictions" the city places on pistol ownership. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So the old adage (which is false) of "The drive to the DZ is more dangerous than the jump" will be replaced with "It's more dangerous to live in New York City than to jump." IL legislature overrides governor to pass CCW
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
oh....16 hours is magical certainly an experienced owner and user with a history of safe use will need 16 hours of training just like someone buying and shooting for the first time what a crock Well, the vast majority of the classes are about rules and regulations, when to shoot, when not to shoot. What to and not to say in the event of a DGU. Where you can and cannot be armed. Reading through the Zimmerman shooting threads, I see a lot of people who really don't understand what the laws on self defense actually say or what kind of behavior has been found to not be self defense in a court of law. Actual gun handling skills are secondary to that. Teaching a newcomer how to safely handle a gun can be properly done fairly quickly. Developing safe habits takes a while, but that's not something that can be taught. And shooting well enough to qualify isn't that big of a deal. Shooting well (like developing safe handling habits) is far more a "practice" thing than a "teaching" thing. I can teach the fundamentals of safe gun handling and basic pistol marksmanship in a class that is well under 16 hours. But the shooter will have to practice a lot more than that to actually become proficient. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Mexican Police Chief Killed By Rifle From Project Gunwalker
wolfriverjoe replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
This thread is hilarious. Really. There are now 2 LEOs dead as a result of the BATF's deliberate actions to deliver firearms sold in the US to Mexican drug gangs. They pretended it was to trace the guns from the dealers, through the straw purchasers and the smugglers to the drug gangs. But there were no (as in absolutely zero) assets in Mexico to follow the guns once they crossed the border. And the BATF told the Mexican authorities nothing (as in absolutely zero) about this "investigation." Several BATF agents have been reassigned, a US attorney has resigned. But that's really about it (the family of the dead Border Patrol agent has a lawsuit in progress, but it's going to take a while for results). I find it ironic that the conversation in Congress has been really similar to this thread. Thread drift, snarky comments, and very very little actual discussion. Of course the Obama administration (the one that was going to be so transparent) has delayed, obfuscated and flat out refused to answer any thing about it. But at least the bullshit rhetoric about how 90% of the guns used by the Mexican drug gangs come from the US has stopped. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Since you used the term "frog brain", I'm going to assume you have read the "Skydiving Duck" cartoons. If you have, then you know that door fear is very normal. Doubting yourself is very normal. Asking "What am I doing here?" while on the plane is very normal. All because jumping from a plane goes against just about every survival instinct we humans have. It's not very normal. Namowal, who wrote those duck cartoons, asked the very same question about the diving exit. My answer was (and is): How hard is it? From a physical standpoint, not very. You simply throw yourself headfirst out the door, turn a bit to the side to present to the relative wind and arch. That's all there is to it. It's a very easy exit to get stable from. From a mental standpoint, however, it's a bit more difficult. You have to throw yourself headfirst out the door. Of a plane flying waaaay above the earth. There's no "climb out into the wind then hang there for a second to get used to the idea before you let go." You just count off and go. But once you've done a couple you will love them. Me too. Page loads except for the ads, then I get a "long running script" warning across the bottom. Not quite like the one Amazon has. It's slowing me down a lot, but isn't showing up on any other forums that I am on (or any other pages for that matter). It happens every time I load a page. It doesn't seem to matter which ad pops up, it happens with all of them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Read this again. She has a very good point. Right now, interest rates are low enough that the benefits of a 15 year fixed or any ARM are minimal. Make sure your loan doesn't have a prepayment penalty (few do these days, but make sure you check). And then pay it off as fast as you can. On my mortgage, at the beginning of the loan, the actual principal payment was only about 20% of the Principal and Interest (tax and insurance were added on as an escrow account, not including that part). By making a double P&I I was effectively taking 5 payments off the back end of the loan. The effectiveness of this diminishes over time, but any extra payment off the principal is money in your pocket because you aren't paying interest on it for the rest of the loan. I did that as much as possible and had the house paid off well ahead of time. Owning my house free and clear is really cool!

Henderson NV police commandeer home, get sued

Yeah, they're called normal people. I am not joking. As for the police - they shot the dude's dog. If true, fuck 'em six ways from sunday. Wrong story. No dogs in this one.
