  1. While I don't care personally if someone is gay or straight, there are still a lot of idiots who do. Many of them think that gays shouldn't have the same rights as straights. Others think that they are "immoral", will go to hell if they don't reform their ways, and should be set straight (pun intended). Read some of the "gay marriage" threads to see some of the vitriol against gays. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 2. When that song came on the radio, a co-worker and myself got into an argument about the gender of the singer. One of us thought it was a dude, while the other thought it was a chick. Then one evening I saw them perform it on TV. So next morning I saw my co-worker and told him: "OK, I saw them on TV last night...and I still don't know if the singer is male of female." I'm not sure what "male of female" is. Good catch, I missed that. There's another singer whose name I forget, similar to the Culture Club's frontman.... was a one hit wonder with a music video... Big long hair, make-up, catchy tune, the works. I couldn't stand him either. Dead or Alive? You Spin Me Round? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. 0,2,0. Finally got my ass up in the sky for the first time this year. Awful, awful spring kept me on the ground until this weekend. One H&P for currency, one 4way that went ok for my first jump of the year.
  4. Do you have any documentation of that? I'm not being snarky, I'm genuinely curious. I know that the Stingers got onto the market (they would fetch about twice what the CIA was trying to buy them back for). They got used in a variety of countries, but I am unaware of them ever being used against the US. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. Both of your posts are pretty vague. If you would give more specifics, you will get better answers. There are a couple of larger DZs that send planes out to various places. Skydive Arizona and Skydive Chicago are two that come to mind. I'm sure there are others. Getting them to send a plane to a location is usually just a question of paying the fees. I would guess that they would include TIs and gear if the price was right. Cspencefly does the "Roaming DZ" thing, he sets up events at places that don't usually have an operating DZ. You might PM him, or search out the RoamingDZ website. Here in the US, landings would almost have to be on private land. The rules require "permission of the landowner" and getting permission to land on public land is next to impossible for liability reasons. Other countries have their own rules. You would do best finding out from DZs that operate in a particular country what their rules are. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It hurts. It really, really hurts. They weasel their furry little way into our hearts and leave us far too soon. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  7. And of course still others get bent out of shape when you simplify stuff. They think you are implying that they are idiots. Which you are, of course. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  8. So the "he has a point" is in reference to horrific working conditions and the Triangle comparison in general? What about the "mutilate your children in front of you for theft" rumor claim? Admittedly there's some pretty horrific stuff that happens in places like this. And a lot of it can be blamed on American consumerism. We want all the crap and we want to pay as little as possible for it. So the unscrupulous will do whatever necessary to get the product on the shelves at the lowest price. No matter what the true "cost". One of the reasons I try very hard to buy "responsibly." Fair trade coffee is one. Not perfect,, but better than it might otherwise be. US made is another. Not always possible and usually more expensive when it is, but worth the price to me. But of course, that means that I'm now denying those poor workers in other countries the opportunity to have a job and support themselves and their families. 9. Meh. They had reason to believe he was armed with both a gun and explosives. If he made any sudden or suspicious moves (or even any move other than directed) they were probably justified in opening fire. I don't like a lot of what the cops did in this situation, but I don't have a problem with this. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. You guys who are saying that don't know that; it's completely speculative. It also cleared a whole area so that any movement would be noticed and not caught-up & potentially camouflaged in all the routine traffic & activity. It probably kept the perp pinned down. It kept other civvies & their vehicles off the street so the perp couldn't commit another carjacking. It kept civvies off the street so that if there was another firefight there'd be less chance of civvies being hit by stray fire or taken hostage. All this tactical Monday morning quarterbacking I'm hearing from non-experts is for the birds. I don't know about that. It isn't speculation that the cops couldn't find him. It isn't speculation that he was found by the homeowner who noticed the boat cover was disturbed. It's reasonable to believe that the homeowner would have checked the boat and made the discovery a lot sooner if he hadn't been "sheltering in place." He took shelter in the boat really close to where the chase ended. When did that happen? Probably fairly soon after the chase. It's entirely possible he was waiting for daylight so that he could carjack another vehicle and try to escape, but get marginally real. If he'd tried to move at all during daylight, he would have been spotted. Do you really think nobody would have noticed him? Especially wounded and covered in blood? And I hope any civilian who spotted him would run for cover, knowing he was armed and dangerous. (of course, a lot of idiots would have stood there, running the video camera, while bullets were flying). And trying to escape during morning rush hour in Boston would have been as stupid as most of the other mistakes he and his brother made. No, I think he would have been captured several hours earlier if they hadn't panicked and done what they did. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 13. What do you mean by "not helping?" Does "not helping" include letting them search my property when I am not required to? Because if so, I'm an asshole. Warrant or get off my porch. Yes. Doing that would be, in my opinion, assholishness because the person doing it is slowing down the process of capturing the terrorist and cop killer. Every second a person stands at their door, locks it, requires the cops to kick it down anyway . . . that person is helping the terrorist and cop killer . . . by tying up forces which could be moving forward to the next location. A person may, in fact, be completely within their rights to do so, but it also makes them assholes. Well, in this particular case, the whole "lockdown" slowed the process down didn't it? Wasn't it after the "stand-down" that the resident went outside and noticed the blood and disturbed boat cover? In this case the whole "lockdown" and man-hunt and all that bullshit accomplished exactly... Nothing. They could have captured him hours earlier if they hadn't had everyone "sheltering in place", shut up in their houses. And the Westboro Baptists are assholes. Exercising their rights in a manner deliberately designed to piss people off. But telling a cop "You can't search my house without a warrant"? Refusing to allow an unwarranted, unreasonable search? I don't see that as being anything but reasonable. Edit to add: No, they obviously didn't stage this to conduct illegal searches. But they sure took advantage of people's fears and the scaremongering by the media to conduct those warrantless searches. And yes, False Sense of Security. Again, what did all the lockdown, illegals searches, and media hype accomplish? It allowed Tsarnayev to stay hidden all day long because the owner of the boat wasn't able to go outside and check it. And apparently, even thought it was just a few blocks from the end of the chase, the cops never checked it either. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. What do you mean by "not helping?" Does "not helping" include letting them search my property when I am not required to? Because if so, I'm an asshole. Warrant or get off my porch. Well, they can stay on the porch. But they can't come in the house without a warrant. I don't see how allowing random, unwarranted, unreasonable searches of everyone's house on the off chance he was in one of them is "helping". When this was going down, I made a comment about that. I heard "house to house searches" and wondered out loud "Do they have warrants? They'd better if they wanted to search my house." I'd do a quick check of the doors and windows for a possible entry. If none was present, I'd do a good search of the house. I don't have that many hiding places. When the cops arrived, I'd have told them "He's not here, I already checked." Through the closed door. I wouldn't have opened the door in the first place. Once they kick it in (and I fully realize that they probably would have), I'd tell them to leave. When (not if) they stayed and did their illegal search, I'd be on the phone to my lawyer and plan on suing the living daylights out of the city and the PD and anyone else. This wasn't "exigent circumstances" it was a manhunt for one person. One incompetent person if you read the article linked in the "Mistakes" thread. And Quade - Don't automatically equate "Civil Libertarians" with "Libertarians". CLs are nothing more than people who value civil liberties. The ACLU is the best example I can think of off the top of my head. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. I think one could argue that eight cops shooting one guy who tried to reach for a gun while on the ground having already been shot is a "mass shooting." Maybe we can come up with a dictionary entry as it sounds like we need multiple definitions though... mass shooting [mas shoot-ing] n. 1) Any event where a firearm is discharged or firearms are discharged and more than one person is injured or killed (as a result of the firearm discharge(s) or otherwise.) 2) Any event where more than one firearm is discharged, or a firearm is discharged more than once. (note: no one need be injured or killed.) There, is that useless enough for everyone? Yes, because your definitions are doodly-squat. It's OK; Wm F. Buckley, for example, was a master at doing that. Diverts the discussion quite nicely, and sometimes people don't even notice. Well, I'd have a hard time defining this incident as a "Mass Shooting." A typical Mass Shooting is one gunman opening fire on a crowd of unarmed victims. Newton CT, Aurora CO, the Giffords shooting in Phoenix, Virginia Tech, and on and on. This is more of a "gun battle" where most of the dead were armed and shooting at each other. Drug deal gone bad? Home invasion where the occupants fought back, but were killed anyway? (and so were the invaders) Hard to say at this point. But it seems to be atypical for a mass shooting event. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. I've had that picture since Friday mid-dayish, but my question is what rule? No dead body pictures? I never tried to post any before, so I guess I missed it. It's not in any of the "Official Rules" but it falls under the "Inappropriate As Determined by the Administrators and Moderators." Billy has been very helpful in assisting them deciding exactly where the lines between "acceptable" and "unacceptable" are. And if Billy says "don't post this", it's not because he has great judgment, it's because he has vast experience. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 17. If you're outside you should be on a GFCI plug. No worries.
  18. 3 dead and 180+ injured in two blasts. Sounds like a WMD to me. They can be of any size as far as I'm concerned if they are still able to kill and maim a bunch of people. Please. Really. Please. A TRUE WMD is capable of killing massive amounts of people. Not 3. Set off one of those IEDs in a crowded football stadium. How many will die? A couple of dozen if it's placed in a strategic spot? Put a small nuke on the 50 yard line. Everyone is dead (60k +) Release Sarin or Ricin or VX and everyone who takes a breath of it is dead. Probably 30k-50k Fly over and release anthrax spores. Most everyone who breathes it in and doesn't get treated right away (before symptoms show up) is dead. Again, 40k +. 19. I'm going to count your reply as a vote to disappoint the guy who needed his rig for competition. Mark. The guy who needed his rig for a competition shouldn't have waited until the last minute to get his reserve repacked. Or should have had a backup rig available. What would have happened if the work was going to take longer? Or if it needed parts that would have to be shipped? I won't do any extra cost work without specific approval from the customer. Period. 20. Good point. If the suspect isn't capable of listening to and understanding the Miranda Rights, it isn't a valid "reading" either. That's already been established. 21. There's no legal requirement to read the Miranda rights at any time. General procedure is to read them at the time of arrest to make sure it's done. All skipping the "Reading of The Rights" does is make it a lot easier to get any statements he makes declared inadmissible. And I have a feeling that they have enough evidence to convict him of at least one murder (the MIT campus cop) and one attempt murder (the other cop) and put him away for "life without." And they won't have any trouble getting search warrants for just about anywhere he may have used to construct the bombs. All the interrogations are going to do is to try and establish if they booby-trapped the places they want to search, and gain intel on who else may have been involved. 22. Not really. It's a concrete example of what you are asking, an example that most of us are at least somewhat familiar with. "Someone" is a known gun enthusiast. He is known to carry at least on an occasional basis, from what he himself posted in the past. He has since become at least somewhat irrational. At least moderately obsessed. If I was one of the moderators involved in his banning, and lived reasonably close to him, I'd be concerned. I would give serious thought to informing the authorities. For more of what you are really talking about: If I knew someone who had the knowledge and skills to construct a decent bomb (I do know a few people that fall into that category) and I saw that person become obsessed/irrational/, then I would very carefully think over the idea of contacting the authorities. I would balance my friendship with the potential for innocent lives being destroyed. I wouldn't want to call the cops on someone who is just venting frustration, but I wouldn't want to live with the guilt of not saying something when I had good reason to believe bad things were going to happen. And realistically, my first step would be to contact a local cop (shift supervisor/sergeant) that's a friend and describe the situation in as much detail as possible without revealing identities. Sort of "I've got a friend who's acting pretty weird. He's said "x" and "y" and done "z". What do you think I should do?" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 24. Well, generally a "17 year old gangbanger" doesn't throw homemade bombs at the police during a pursuit. And there are some reports that the dead one may have been wearing a suicide vest. He had blast injuries and burns that didn't seem to coincide with the stuff that was thrown during the pursuit/shootout (that's based on what CBS News is reporting). There's one cop dead and another in critical condition after last night's confrontation. This guy is armed with both guns and explosives (at least he used them last night). He and his now dead brother may well have placed two bombs that killed 3 random people (not proven, just suspected). I'd say treating him as a little bit more dangerous than the "run of the mill" gangbanger is prudent. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. NPR just had the Mass Governor's statement live. 1 suspect dead, one at large. Both are the suspects who's pics were released. They are brothers, 19 and 20. Both Chechen nationals in the US legally. The naked guy is a "suspected accomplice" who is in custody but not yet named. 1 cop dead. The suspect is not inside of any perimeter, and the entire city of Boston and all it's suburbs are under a "shelter in place" order. Holy Fuck!
