  1. Oh, that's too bad, I was expecting a 'social justice' argument. Well, I can always hope DreamDancer or one of his sock puppets come out.... (but I don't, I don't wish that on all the good people here) Damn!! I shoulda named the title "Corporate Social Justice". Oh, well, locked is locked. You could always link alternet or common dreams. 2. Well, the .17HMR is a necked-down version of the 22 Win Mag, which is a much more powerful round than a standard 22 Long Rifle. Most of the "minimum caliber" laws are designed to ensure that wounded and lost game is kept to a minimum. From that standpoint, banning 22LR, but allowing 17HMR does make at least some sense. But that's assuming that the 22 ban you are talking about didn't ban 22WMR in addition to 22LR. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 4. Anything less than 26000# GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Registered - the max the truck can legally weigh) and without airbrakes can be driven on a regular license. The typical "Ryder" straight truck (26' box truck) is one. http://www.ryder.com/en/truck-rental/rentalitems/straight-truck.aspx 8000# capacity. That's a lot of cigarettes. 5. When this happened in Canada, some of the manufacturers were found to be supplying the illegal cigarettes out the back door. This also shows that the oft repeated mantra of legalize drugs and tax it heavily, is really not such a simple solution as people like to think. Well, when a pack of cigarettes is almost $10 in NY and around $4 in VA, the incentive to smuggle them is pretty high. The trick is to tax them enough to raise revenue, but not so much that illegal trafficking and black markets become attractive. And this was proven after Prohibition ended here in the US. The taxes were still there, and generated a significant amount of revenue (one of the lesser known but more important reasons for repeal was the tax revenue). It was just that the taxes didn't raise the cost to the consumer enough to make illegal distilleries and smuggling attractive to the bootleggers. With the exception of a few die-hard holdouts in the back hills of course. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. Yeah, there's this Russian on here (hasn't been here in a while though) named "Nikki." He has to fend off the "Keyboard Romeos" too. To the OP - As you have already noticed, that will be too small for you right now. The dude who wants to sell it doesn't have your best interests in mind. He wants to sell his gear. The sites GooniesKid posted (especially the "bigairsports" one) are good reading. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. Meh. I had to read it twice to realize that he wasn't attaching it to the H/C. Chuck is the first one I've seen that doesn't tie something to the H/C. And this is apparently "old school." Sometimes those "old farts" know a thing or two. Every other idea for a "Slider Tie" attaches somewhere on the upper part of the H/C. Usually to a reserve flap in some way. Some are more "secure" (bad idea IMO) some are less (not a good idea, just less bad). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. 'Odds are' it'll tear off and everything will be rosey... Then again, if it takes a heartbeat to tear off and the risers are released enough to pull the RSL you're firing a reserve into that mess... A stretch maybe...but the system wasn't designed to have a 3rd attachment point. It wasn't TSO'd with a knob attached to a reserve flap. Since there are ways of 'stowing' the slider that don't require attaching it to the HC...why not go with that? Good Lord, you guys. It's f*ckin' velcro an inch and a half square. It releases VERY easily. Hell, the RSL requires more force to pull a reserve pin after a cutaway than the velcro does to release. Yup....'odds are' everything will work just fine. But like I said, I still (personally) don't like putting something on the HC behind me...not on my last chance. . But he's not attaching it to the H/C. He said specifically that he attached the little Velcro strap to the collar of the jumpsuit. I agree that the "ball and bungee" attached to the reserve flaps seem like an invitation for trouble. And I try very hard to look at something and envision a "failure mode." Interestingly, but not too surprisingly, I'm far better at spotting potential issues in someone else's stuff than my own ideas. And I really can't see any real issues with Chuck's idea. Small patch of Velcro, not a lot of force to release it. It's right by the 3 rings, so it's not likely to pull anything in an odd direction when the main gets chopped. And although it's theoretically possible for the main to be in some direction other than straight "up" (Up meaning over your head, even though the earth may not be directly under your feet), the chances of it are really low. If the main is out, it will be over your head. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  9. The part that you seem to think eliminates due process. Please show me where the SC implied that "not unlimited" means "ignores due process." And what about the word "Commercial" in reference to sales? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 10. ^This Any pyramid scheme is a fabulous investment for those on the top couple of levels. Usually the ones who start it. Mid-levels (the ones that think they are early adopters) can sometimes break even. Anyone who is anywhere near the bottom (or not anywhere near the top) gets screwed. 11. How about "Friend Farming"? It's what a lot of those stupid "Can you name..." or "My (insert family member here) will (insert valiant deed like quitting smoking here) if we get a million likes" More info about the rather creepy motives behind this shit here: http://www.calgaryherald.com/technology/Budge+Facing+Facebook+scams/8176929/story.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. Well, Lanza got his guns by stealing them from his mother, whom he murdered. And I thought that he was able to pass a background check. He didn't want to wait the 14 days because he thought his mom was going to institutionalize him. But he could have bought them legally if he had been willing to wait. (I could be wrong on this. If someone has a contradictory report, I'd like to see it). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 13. I don't know anything specific about the Centaurus, but keep in mind that you will need to find a rigger that can pack it (will at the very least need a manual). And with any rare, oddball or orphan gear, you will want to know if parts are available. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. Those "Long Standing Prohibitions" are for convicted felons, or those found not guilty by reason of mental defect or those involuntarily committed to a mental institution. All of those follow the concept of "due process." You seem to want to be able to declare someone a "nutter" and strip them of their rights without that due process. And I don't see where the court even begins to allow that. And the last part of that: "Law imposing conditions and qualification on commercial sales." Do you think they specifically used the word "commercial" by mistake? Or did they mean to only require those "conditions qualifications" for commercial sales, exempting private sales? 15. Well, to be perfectly fair, the only "internet" sales that go through an FFL, get background checks and all that are those that cross state lines. That's true for any sale. GCA '68 established the FFL, and rules for transfers. But it had to stay out of intra-state sales because the Federal gov't really couldn't regulate those. So currently, stuff up on GunBroker or similar sites doesn't require a background check if the buyer and seller are in the same state. They can agree on price, ship the gun and send payment. I don't know if the proposed law would require checks on intra-state internet sales. I think the argument could be made that if the host servers for the site are in a different state, the sale crosses state lines (kinda like this is a South African owned site hosted on Canadian servers). Personally, I'm not against requiring some sort of evidence that the buyer is legal to own a gun. Personally, I wouldn't sell a gun to a stranger without some sort of evidence that they are legal. A carry permit, being vouched for by someone I trust, that sort of thing. But I'm not too keen on having each sale noticed by the government by a check on each purchase. I know a few guys who have fairly extensive collections that have zero paper trail. All their guns were either bought pre-'68 or in private purchases. The government has no idea whatsoever that they are gun owners. A little paranoid for me, but that's their choice. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. EBT cards are just like debit or pre-paid credit cards. There's a set balance on them, the cashier runs it through the machine and you are good to go. (EBT stands for "Electronic Balance Transfer") I don't know if they are registered to the proper user (as in "needs to show an ID to use it), but just like a CC, lost or stolen ones can be shut down with a phone call. So I don't believe it would encourage theft. But I fully agree that it's most likely a welfare scam. Selling food stamps for cash to spend it on stuff they aren't supposed to. Only with this scam, the welfare "fraudster" accompanies you through the checkout and pays for your stuff, you then give them cash money to blow on booze, cigarettes, drugs, gasoline, whatever. 18. And don't forget the Post Office. Congress (Both sides of the aisle) bitch about the PO not being able to break even, but when realistic cuts to service like shutting down little used Post Offices or stopping Saturday delivery, then Congress says "No, you can't do that." It'd be hilarious if it wasn't real. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  19. Well, considering that Cho, Loughner and Holmes all went through the background check, and Lanza's mom did too, I find it hard to believe that any law requiring background checks on any private sales would have made any difference. 20. Serious answer: Generally, 2 size jumps isn't recommended. Not that it can't be done, but it isn't considered a good idea. Have you read Brian Germain's Downsizing chart? It has a good jump number/minimum size chart. It also has a good article on canopy skills (it's a sticky in the Canopy Control forum). Have you read Billvon's "Downsizing Checklist? It has a list of skills that you should be able to do before downsizing (it's in the safety articles). Those are 2 good places to start if you want to know if you are ok to downsize. 21. The level of stupidity exhibited by some cops with their guns is absolutely amazing. Basic safety rules ignored, common sense behavior right out of the window. This is just the latest. The ATF agent who shot himself in the foot (on YouTube) is one of the more famous. There was a chief here in Wisconsin (Madison IIRC) who thought the oven would be a safe place to store his gun. And then forgot it was there and turned the oven on. And yes, the heat caused the ammunition to fire. And because it was IN the gun, it did what it was supposed to (loose rounds that cook off aren't as much of a threat). Wait, I know... Take the guns away from the cops. 22. Riiiiiiight. And how long can you stay stopped? And how often do you stop? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  23. Ok. First off, you are already aware of it, are discussing it with your rigger and are planning on discussing it with the CC instructor. Their input is far superior to mine. And I will agree that if you have short arms, giving up a little tail deflection in order to get optimum flaring performance is probably your best trade-off. One thing though - If you are deflecting the tail, and start pulling on a front riser, the canopy will buck some. Nothing really nasty, or unmanageable, but it will definitely get your attention, especially the first couple of times. 24. That sounds pretty good. One question: How much slack is in the steering lines when you have the toggles all the way up? There should be a little bit of a bow in them so that you know the tail is not being pulled down at all. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. Panic buying. Plain and simple. People are afraid that the government is going to place restrictions on what they can buy so they are buying up everything in sight. And at ridiculous prices too. I hear that .223 is going for $20/box (of 20). A buck a round for .223. The "Government is buying it all up to keep it out of our hands" is bullshit. I don't know of any government agencies that use large quantities of .22 Long Rifle, but it's as hard to find as anything. And the production lines that make it are not easily convertible to anything else. 40 and 45 are fairly easy to find. Very pricey, but not hard to find. If most cops use 40, why hasn't the government "buy up" made that hard to find? So it's 2009 (after Obama got elected) all over again. Everyone panics, buys everything in sight, prices go through the roof. Guns are in the exact same situation. The manufacturers are going full tilt to try and meet the demand. Russian imports have gone through the roof. Wolf and Tula are pretty easy to find, although 223 flies off the shelf the instant it's put out.
