Did the Zimmerman trial increase racism?
wolfriverjoe replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't think it was exacerbated, because it was always there. Sort of like Lawrockets comments about women's rights in the "Another Dem who Disrespects Women" thread. Racism and discrimination are pretty pervasive in our society. It's a lot better than it used to be, but it's still there. Most of it is far more subtle than it used to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. Some of the "closeted" racists came out during the GZ/TM debate, and since white racism toward blacks is more prevalent than the other way (because there are more whites than blacks, not because whites have more of a tendency to be racist), there was more "racist bias" towards TM in favor of GZ than the other way. That doesn't mean that the people who supported GZ and his behaviors were racist. I don't even really think GZ was all that racist. He profiled TM, sure, but when the majority of the crimes are committed by young, black males; then it isn't all that unreasonable to be suspicious of an unfamiliar young, black male. To take it a step further, I don't think all of the people who are convinced TM was a "thug" are racist. "Youthist" maybe (prejudiced against young, "hoody wearing saggy pantsed" men). BUT... there are a few on here who are blatantly racist, biased against blacks. A couple of them steadfastly deny it, but anyone who reads their posts on a regular basis can see it. Even at $20 they would have gotten some. A lot of little old ladies who have their dead husband's gun and don't want it, a bunch of clunkers, maybe a few BB and pellet guns, depending on the rules of the event. There was one a little while back (Illinois maybe?) where some pro-gun folks dumped off several non-working pieces of crap (worth about $0) and a broken BB pistol and got several of the vouchers. They usually give out gift cards or similar, not cash. These guys took the cards for a local sporting goods store and used them towards a new gun. Thoughts on No flaps or No cuts for H&P ??
wolfriverjoe replied to stayhigh's topic in Safety and Training
I don't know about a Caravan, but I never used any flaps for jumprun in a 182. The jumpers would biff their heads on it. Not a tailstrike kind of "biff", just that the flaps would get in the way. Think about where the door, step and strut are in relation to the flaps and I think you will understand. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Comments concerning a Canopy Licensing System
wolfriverjoe replied to MakeItHappen's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Have you looked for gear appropriate for a beginner lately? Put a 170 or 190 Sabre2 or Safire or similar up in the classifieds and see how long it takes to sell (hint: think in minutes or hours, not days). The reason "groups on fbook" are filled with "gear for 5'6" 130lbers" is because it doesn't sell as fast. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." $10 a load is a bit on the low side, but for pilots who are doing it for fun (or building hours, which these guys aren't doing) it's ok. One thing to remember is that being a jump pilot can be a lot of fun. Especially for your situation, where the pilot isn't going full speed from early to late, sneaking in a bathroom break here and there, eating on the way up, ect., ect. The best part is the descent. alone in the plane and a chance to just "play." Airline pilots don't get to do that a lot. It's also fun to open the door in flight (normally a bad thing) and to watch the jumpers go. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." When does the 'beer light' come on?
wolfriverjoe replied to pchapman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've always thought "wheels up on last load", with a place away from the general operations area so that tandems can have one after they jump, but before the end of the day (we always made them go over by the firepit). Personally, I can't see anyone getting drunk enough to be a danger to themselves or others from the time the plane takes off until it lands and gets put away. But I can see how the appearance could create issues, so I fully agree with "DZO's decision", even if I didn't vote for it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Did the Zimmerman trial increase racism?
wolfriverjoe replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
Increase it? No. I don't think so. What it did was force us to recognize how much racism (in many different directions) is still present in society. There is a lot of racism still around. Many folks don't see it, or refuse to acknowledge it. There are a fair amount of folks who are pretty racist, but claim that they are not. And they get pretty uncomfortable when it's shoved in their faces. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It's been just 4 days since you started This Thread saying you were thinking about applying for the job, and basically asking what it was like. What's up? My guess is that it's either Funks or JR. But I could be wrong. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Got it. Thanks. I really don't know exactly how a parliamentary system actually functions. From your description, it isn't all that different from our full Congress (House is lower, Senate is upper). And that article Jakee linked is right on. More posturing and "Doing SOMETHING" rather than taking effective steps toward actually addressing the problems. Typical politicians doing typical garbage. Not any different than over here. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Well, first off, BHO doesn't have the power to enact laws. He could propose it, and do a bunch of arm-twisting of congress-critters to get it introduced and passed, but he couldn't simply "do it." For legislative purposes, all the President does is sign or veto stuff. It's one of the major differences between our setup and yours. This is a cartoon segment from the '70s, part of a series called "Schoolhouse Rock" that played in between Saturday morning cartoons. 3 minutes of how a bill becomes a law. here in the US. I'm just a Bill I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't pass constitutional muster. Even serious, hardcore stuff is pretty much covered under "free speech" rules. I get very, very nervous anytime the politician pull out the "For the innocent children" line. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Trayvon Martin case and double standards
wolfriverjoe replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, for one thing, a black teenager being killed by a white guy for "looking like a thug" (yes, there's a lot more to it) brings back a lot of very ugly memories in a lot of people, both black and white. And for another, a neighborhood watch person killing someone he was suspicious of doesn't happen everyday. For that matter, deadly force in self defense that gets challenged in court doesn't happen very often. Black on black violence happens every day in cities big and small across the country. Did you hear about the fatal car crash in Chicago the other day? Or the double fatal head-on in Wisconsin? No? But the three dead in the Asiana crash in San Fran are still making headlines. Because car crashes kill people every day across the country and planes don't. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." For me, trust is vital. Without that trust, there can't be a real relationship. One of the reasons my ex-wife is my ex is because of how she lied to me. Not about cheating, but about other stuff. There were other issues, some of them my fault, but the lack of trust was one of the biggest reasons. Your GF has lied to you repeatedly. You have to decide whether or not you will be able to trust her in the future. If you think that you can rebuild that trust, then move forward. If you can't, then you are probably done. And that trust has to work both ways. She has to feel safe telling you the truth. She may feel that she has to lie to you because of how you might react to the truth (my ex used this excuse). Good luck. Edit to add: Wow. 'Twardo said something very similar, he posted his short response while I was thinking about and composing mine. Rollings Stone Set To Put Tsarnaev On The Cover
wolfriverjoe replied to rickjump1's topic in Speakers Corner
And which part of that liberal brainwashing would make them fall in love with a mass murderer? What have Jackson, Clinton and Soros said that would encourage them to like this guy? Anything? No? Obvious troll is too obvious Look at his picture. This poor boy is no mass murderer. He is a victim of his environment to include his older brother and multiple sessions of islamic jihad on the internet. He is a victim who shows remorse. Just a couple of nights in the slammer no doubt rehabilitated this misguided youth. Set him free. That's the full depth of your devious Liberal brainwashing strategy? If someone looks nice they must be nice? I gotta be honest, I was hoping for something a little more creative. That isn't a "Liberal Brainwashing Theory," that's the epitome of women picking losers because they are: A - cute B - "fixable" Both Menendez brothers and Richard Ramirez (the Night Stalker) met and married women after their convictions. Hell no. They are worth way too much money. And they are owned by the Ford family. They are as likely to leave Detroit as the Bears are to leave Chicago. Not that the Lions are ever going to be a relevant team, but they are still in the NFL. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Totally normal. Door fear is very common. As long as you do ok once you are out, and as long as you do ok under canopy, you are not a danger to yourself or others. No, the apocalypse is coming. You know, what he means is Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! I agree that they will be able to disregard any info obtained at the expense of his basic, constitutionally protected rights. They have enough evidence to convict without it. But that doesn't excuse the behavior. Interrogating a suspect who is seriously injured? Denying counsel? Trampling all over his rights? It will all get ignored. Because he is a terrorist. Actually, yes. Depending on state law about "Age of Consent," 2 teens who are in a relationship can go from legal to illegal if one turns 18 and the other is still under. To make it even stranger, there have been cases of 17 year olds being charged as adults with statutory rape for having sex with another 17 y.o. Is that Pete? Yes! Yes it is! Great guy! Just... a bit of a height mismatch... He's lots of fun. We roomed together for a very, very long week a couple years ago. A couple thoughts: (discuss these with your instructors before trying them for real) Line twists on student canopies are usually a minor annoyance. Grabbing the risers during deployment usually isn't the best idea. It will do very little to stop the twists. Paying attention to your body position will do the most to stop the twists. And it's been shown that pulling outward on the risers (braces) is less effective than pushing them inward. The "high hot air" actually makes you come down faster, not slower. It's less dense and doesn't support you as well. I don't agree with the "Do nothing under 100 meters." I was taught do only do minor corrections. Any significant control inputs are a bad idea, but I was taught (with a rather docile student canopy) that pulling the toggle no lower than my shoulder and holding the turn no more than 90 degrees was acceptable. It's the hard turns that are held too long that get the canopy diving towards the ground. Landing on your ass is never a good idea. Ever. Learn to do a PLF and learn it well. Be ready to do one on every jump. It can save you from serious injury. Congrats on your first 2 jumps and I hope you continue.
