Yes. I see the quandry and I agree that there really isn't a good answer. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

It's the woman's body and her fetus. That makes it her choice. Nobody else gets to make that choice. For an absolutely horrible analogy: I can have my dog put down for any reason I choose. Age, illness, behavioral issues. I can have him put down for a treatable illness that I don't want to pay for. But YOU (generic you, not you specifically) cannot kill my dog because (let's say) it pooped on your lawn. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Rule 34? If it exists, there's porn of it. Don't know about a generic "You didn't think of it first" rule though. Westboro porn would be kind of funny. More in a "Funny-strange" way than a "Funny-humorous" way. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

If you don't visit a forum for a while, the numbers reset to "everything unread." It works that way even if you visit the site, but not a particular forum. I haven't been in the S H&T for a while and it has reset. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Is her quoted weight of 140 her exit weight? Or just her "driver's license" weight? If she goes 140 in street clothes, then she will probably push 165 or more with full gear on. That puts here at 1.1:1 or higher. And a 150 is considered "high performance" no matter what the wingloading. Take a look at Brian's downsizing chart and see how much experience she should have for it. I'm guessing it's going to be a bit more than 25 jumps. The 'Special relationship' between the UK and the USA
wolfriverjoe replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't think it's dead. I really don't think it will ever die. The US and UK have been very close for a very long time. Well before Churchill. And there have been disagreements and disputes before. The Falklands comes to mind. There will never be complete and total agreement on everything. But there will always be an understanding that we have too much in common to abandon one another. The UK is nowhere near what it was at the height of the British Empire (duh). But it still has a lot of power and influence, politically, economically and militarily. Must be cultural Persian thing to have a list of requirements a yard long. Nah, there's douchebags in every ethnicity. I think the Persians are just more open about it. Omigawd! Is there more than one like him???? It's not who you think it is. SoCal, not Jersey. House, not condo that it's underwater up to it's eyeballs in. I should let the lawyers respond to this, but that statement is not true. There is plenty of case law where it has been upheld that trespassers have the right to use lethal force to defend themselves when assaulted by the property owner (assuming all the criteria for self defense is met). It's true that there can be a valid claim, if the property owner assaults them, but in this case, he hadn't done anything other than tell them to get off his lawn. They responded to that by picking up rocks. He was carrying the gun, but not pointing it at them at that point. At least, that's what I remember the original story that I read saying. I could be "misremembering." And again, it will be up to the lawyers and the jury to sort all this out. And it's a hell of a mess. I'm very skeptical that that actually happened. His lawyer fully understands what's needed to assert a "defense of one's person defense" under the castle doctrine; and the "rocks" claim has all the hallmarks of that. I'll bet if we had a time machine and a video camera, we'd see the fed-up homeowner verbally and angrily reproaching the group, someone in the group drunkenly telling him to go fuck himself and them laughing at him, at which point his anger took over and he fired the shots. But no rocks. I don't know about that. One of the earlier stories on this had a statement from one of the boaters that they had picked up rocks before the shots were fired. And because the boaters were already trespassing and vandalizing the property, the homeowner was within his rights to confront them. And the boaters wouldn't have a valid self defense claim because they were in the wrong as trespassers and vandals. That could make this a valid self-defense claim by the homeowner. But that will be up to the jury. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Yes regarding contraception. Probably no on the STDs. That's not their primary mission. Actually yes on both. They don't just serve women. Low cost testing and treatment for STDs for both men and women is part of their mission. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Interstate Battery Commercial
wolfriverjoe replied to beowulf's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The "nothing spectacular" was a comment, not a criticism. It wasn't an amazingly huge formation. It wasn't proxy wingsuiting, it wasn't high performance swoops. It was a nice, well executed belly jump. It showed the kinds of skills a good jumper has. It is probably a step or two above what I could do. I thought it showed skydiving in a way that we see all the time, but the average wuffo wouldn't realize is "normal." And I think it was really cool that you got the opportunity to be a part of it. A lot. And even then it won't make a whole lot of sense. It's a total fluke. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
#1 - If the canopy isn't landable, it's a malfunction. Chop it. From your description, I agree with the others that it was probably tension knots. In addition to worn, fuzzy lines, they can come from the steering lines being twisted up. Those twists form loops, those loops form tension knots. They disappear as soon as the tension is removed from the lines. Ask your instructors about them. #2 - I doubt I'd try to land it. Even a 7 second turn will cause enough of a dive to be a problem, especially if it is allowed to continue for a while. It may have been possible to use risers on the knotted side and toggle on the unknotted side to perform enough of a flare to land safely... Or maybe not. I might screw with it a little, and see how controllable it was, if I had enough altitude to do these things. But if I am at my hard deck and I am not certain that I have enough control to land safely... See Ya. #3 - It is unlikely to happen on a reserve. Packing is much more neatly and precisely done. If it did happen, then you have to do the best you can to land as softly and smoothly as you can. Not much other choice, is there? Again, a combination of rear riser on knotted side and toggle or rear on unknotted side to get as close to normal flight as possible, flare as best you can, PLF like a SOB on landing. #4 - Other than pumping the brakes, which you did, the only way to get rid of tension knots is to relieve the tension. You could theortically stall the canopy to do this, then snap the knotted lines with a "whip like" motion to try and clear them. BUT doing this is a pretty advanced maneuver. I doubt that I would even try this myself, unless it was a deliberate high pull. I'd want a lot of altitude before I'd even consider something like this. From your description, you did not have a canopy you could land safely. That is a situation that calls for the reserve. It's not a "severity" issue. It's a judgement issue. "Can I land this thing?" If not... See Ya. You also did not screw around too long trying to fix it (this has caused a couple deaths recently). I would say you did the right thing. Anti Vaccination Church Hit with Measles Outbreak
wolfriverjoe replied to wolfriverjoe's topic in Speakers Corner
Nothing in my life fits neatly into a labeled box. Including me. I just found it interesting that the main reason for the outbreak (the lack of vaccination) is not being reported. At least on the one source I listened to. It may be being properly reported on other networks. And I wonder if it's the "Will of God" that these idiots who preach so loudly against vaccination are getting sick from a disease that has largely been eliminated by... Vaccination. Anti Vaccination Church Hit with Measles Outbreak

I haven't seen this here. Some of you might find it interesting. (Thanks to Nerdgirl for posting it on FB) I had heard the story on mainstream media (CBS radio news station) and NEVER heard the fact that the church was anti-vaccination. So much for the "Liberal media war on religion." http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/08/26/1234055/-Anti-vaccine-megachurch-hit-with-measles-epidemic-now-offering-free-vaccinations?fb_action_ids=10151915177858793&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=other_multiline&action_object_map=%7B%2210151915177858793%22%3A210635359101806%7D&action_type_map=%7B%2210151915177858793%22%3A%22og.likes%22%7D&action_ref_map=%5B%5D "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Positive image in Longmont
wolfriverjoe replied to BigMikeH77's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't think it was a paid ad.... Define "paid." I've known DZs that will invite reporters out to do a tandem for no charge. Understanding that a positive story will come out of it. It's not a revenue generator for the news organization, but they aren't paying what the general public would for the experience. The stories I've seen come from that sort of thing are very similar to this one. I see nothing wrong with it. It's a very positive story, and perhaps the newsies are aware of the situation, and wanted to show the public what it's like from the other side. That… is… stellar! That's horrible. Truly awful. Cruel, mean, disgusting. And totally awesome!!!! Seriously, you really have to change your mindset about food, not just what you eat. And you have to make it enjoyable. Which you seem to be doing. Congrats. And the baby poop prank in truly inspired. I now see how you made it to where you are. Your mind just ain't right. How many times are you going to ask this? NOBODY is agreeing with you. Not one. Do you have any idea how rare unanimous opinion on here is? You really don't have a clue how little you know about this sport. I'm going to guess you aren't even scared on the plane ride up, are you? You said that you read the "small format camera incidents" thread, and that obviously, all those people are idiots. And that you are too good and too smart to do anything like that. Don't you think that all those people thought that too? What in particular, what specific skydiving experience do you have to be sure that you won't do something stupid? Like all the others. You are suffering from Dunning/Kreuger. What is known around here as "Madd Skilz." The real experts on here have seen 'you' before. And all the other "youse" that have come and gone before you. Some went in wheelchairs, some went in bodybags. Get serious, get current or do tandems. This isn't Point Break. Care to post where your DZ is? I'm curious if anyone on here has encountered you. Or maybe you are a certain someone using another sockpuppet. And has changed his tactics enough that nobody recognizes you. Looking closely, the grammar, spelling and syntax are somewhat familiar. You do know that each of the characters represented one of the "7 Deadly Sins", right? Ok, without googling it, I'll take a stab: Greed-Thurston pride- the professor gluttony-Lovee Gilligan wrath-the Captain sloth-Gilligan Lovee lust-Ginger envy-MaryAnne How'd I do? Pretty close. Does anyone else remember how many coconut cream pies Gilligan could eat? And apparently, Sherwood Schwartz himself admitted it in his book. And there was another subtext (again, admitted by Schwartz) that it was also a representation of society and democracy. The Howells were the elite, Ginger was Hollywood Celebrity, the Professor was academia, the Skipper was the military and Gilligan and Mary Ann were the common people. Most people missed these subtleties (I certainly did when I watched it as a kid), but they made the show what it was, without preaching or shoving it in our faces. Welcome to the Nataly Stalkers Club! Pfft. He doesn't even care if she's there or not. He's more concerned about his car thingy. The real members of the club would not be interested in F1.
