  1. Again, it's more than "Disagreements." She is actively trying to take peoples rights away. She is lying and being very hypocritical in going about it. If it was an honest debate, using facts and logic, she would most likely lose. So she uses whatever tactics she can get away with. Some folks get a little passionate about that. 2. Post 16 - In the comments section of the video, the student said he did all his scheduled tasks, knowing it was on video and the instructor passed him after viewing the video on the ground. 3. Really? Over gun nonsense? Well, some people view it as more than "nonsense." It's the second thing in the Bill of Rights. I don't think it was placed there by accident. And Feinstein swore an oath to "Uphold and defend the Constitution." Ignoring a part of it that she doesn't like seems wrong to me. During the debates over the AWB in 94 she clearly stated that if she had the votes, she'd ban them and require they be surrendered. And she lies. A lot. She makes claims about guns and crime that are complete fabrications. And she's a total hypocrite. This example of her bringing guns in to show how bad they are while not allowing a pro-gun legislator to bring them in to show how much of a fraud she is is typical. She also is one of the most anti-gun politicians in Washington, yet has a carry permit (or at least used to). And getting a permit in the San Francisco area is virtually impossible for a regular citizen. I don't wish her dead, but I'd love to see her go away. 4. Not "just for the heck of it." Because it's really, really fun in a Porsche. If I can see that there's no traffic coming, then sometimes I will take an extra lap and hang the tail out a little going around. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. Died at age 88. Second Mercury astronaut to orbit the earth. Only went up once. He got a lot of blame for the problems of the mission, but it wasn't all his fault. He later was a deep sea diver, working with the SEALAB project for a long time. That leaves Glenn as the last survivor. I wonder if they put a bottle of good stuff away. 6. I can make my garden grow - tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, brussels sprouts normally. It tastes so much better fresh and out of the garden than from the store. I make (assemble) my own ammunition and have for a long time. It's been nice this past summer not having to worry about finding it in the stores. Last year I started casting my own bullets. That was an interesting learning experience. I mostly use range scrap (I pick bullets up off the ground and out of the backstops). I've tried a couple of different sources of other lead (and tin) and have had a reasonable amount of success. I started off making 45s, after I got those working good, I added in 357s (38), I now have a 380 mold on the way. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. What kind of exposure levels are they measuring? Hard numbers, not just "large increases." While I certainly wouldn't trust the government to tell us, there are enough people who actually know about this stuff that if it was real, it couldn't be kept a secret. Navy "nucs", power company people, docs who deal in radioactivity, even just interested amateurs. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is a Benny or Pro-Tec Helmet. It gives you your own helmet (not the stinky. sweaty ones off the student rack), neither of them cost all that much (~$60) and both of them provide significantly more real protection over the high-end "Skydiving" headgear. They make great first helmets. Good protection for when (not if) you have a bad landing. Low cost so if you damage it or decide not to pursue the sport you aren't out a big chunk of change. 9. You can do whatever kind of math you want to justify the purchase, but new will never make more financial sense than used in good condition. I bought my first rig about 10 years ago, shortly after I started. 7 or 8 years old, I was the third owner (it was 2 previous peoples "first rig"). The CYPRES was just out of it's 4 year check (2nd owner had put it in). It is now in the process of being inspected by a prospective buyer. Selling price is $1000 less than what I paid. If you discount the CYPRES, I'm taking a $200 charge. 10 years, ~250 jumps, lots of fun. I've had to get it repacked, CYPRES checks (until the CYPRES died), new BOC pouch because the old one stretched out. Basic rig maintenance. I blew $6k on a new rig (used main, everything else new) a couple years ago. No regrets on the expense, but I know perfectly well it doesn't make financial sense. I could have bought a used container for a lot less. Even if I had gotten the harness resized, I could have saved a bunch of money going used. So I know where you are coming from wanting new. But it doesn't make sense from a financial point of view. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  10. What caliber? Not too important, just curious. Tika makes an awesome 22, but I doubt you are looking for that. New or used? Just like jump gear; used, in good condition as determined by a qualified inspection, can produce great value. Personally, if I was looking for a decent bolt rife, I'd probably choose Savage. Not too expensive, the Accu-trigger is really good, good quality. IMO, Savage gives the best value out there right now. Don't forget the scope. A good scope will cost as much as the rifle, if not more (another reason to go used - used scopes don't hold value very well). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. Yes, in the contextual sense he means it, it really is... more or less. Sure, there are some examples of non-Catholic clergy - just like, say, teachers, scoutmasters or cops - who sometimes abuse their positions to sexually exploit juveniles. But, at least in modern times (say, the past 70 years or so), only in the Catholic Church has the sheer number of examples of adult clerical and vocational serial sexual abusers of juveniles reached utterly epidemic proportions... Don't forget about the leadership of the church actively covering up and protecting the abusers. Some were moved several times, to places where they again had the opportunity to exploit children, with no warning at all given to the congregation. 12. Yes. The consequences for inattention or neglect in this are... Severe. I don't "constantly adjust everything." Once I'm geared up properly, everything stays where it's supposed to. Some guys do that, but that doesn't require being geared up. they just have a need to constantly touch themselves. Tons of stand up comedy material about this. 13. Caller ID. I still have a landline and an actual answering machine. The cool thing about the answering machine is "Talking Caller ID." It announces the phone number of the incoming call. I don't even have to look at the phone. If it isn't a number I recognize, or at least a local number, I don't answer it. If they want to talk to me, they can leave a message. If they don't want to leave a message, it must not have been that important. Occasionally, I'm in the mood to mess with the telemarketers. Knowing who I will be dealing with gives me a chance to think of how to approach them. Charities get asked what percentage of the donation gets chewed up by admin costs, sales creatures get asked detailed questions about the performance or specs (like maybe 10 minutes worth), then after wasting their time, I tell them what I really think about people who call me and invade my privacy to either try to beg money from me or to sell me some useless piece of junk that I don't want or need. It isn't a nice ending to what they thought was a potentially lucrative call. But not too often. The scammers want to scam you. (Duh) They will convince you that you need their product to save your computer. Then they will either sell you some useless product or service or just rip off your credit card. 14. Interesting article/interview. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/01/pope-francis-interview_n_4023659.html?ir=World I don't know if he's serious, or if he's just making it look good. But if it's for real, there may well be a serious shakeup in the church. Which would be a very good thing. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. Bolding mine. Only up to a point. That's one of the things that make guns very effective in a situation like this. It's the "pack mentality." As this situation happened, one of the attackers could hang back a little bit and be reasonably sure he was not in too much danger. So there was no incentive to break off pursuit. The more aggressive ones were right up by the car, but the rest were staying "out of immediate danger." If the driver of the Range Rover had had a gun available, then anyone could have been targeted, not just the ones close up. So all the attackers are potentially in danger. And then they usually run for their lives. Even the ones who are armed. In riot situations, anyone not in the front of the crowd is usually pretty safe. So they have the security and anonymity of the crowd to protect them. Until the guns come out and (again) anyone can get killed. It's happened a lot of times. There are countless videos of armed robbers turning and running the instant they realize that they are facing an armed "victim." The same in riot situations. As soon as the mob realizes that they aren't in control, that their target has the ability to kill any of them, they usually cut and run. 16. I don't have all the facts, just what I have seen on the news. There may be important parts of the story that I am missing (I'm not into the typical "I know you are but what am I?" arguments on here). So I could be wrong. But the cops didn't draw down on her until after she rammed the WH gate, right? And they chased her around for a while, including her ramming a cop car, before they opened fire, right? I don't see a wrongful death suit going anywhere on this one. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 17. Why? The woman didn't have any weapons in the car, but the car itself is a pretty potent weapon. She rammed the cop cars at least once, and made it clear that she wasn't going to give up. I don't agree with a lot of the "use of deadly force" decisions that the cops make, but in this case I don't have any real issues with it. And the news is covering it pretty well (it's been on local TV evening news) including video of the car chase. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 18. Lots of good advice so far, here's mine: Brake pads are pretty simple. Go online and find a forum. Search around a bit to find what you want to do. I'd be willing to bet that, somewhere, there is a step by step with pictures for it. Or search YouTube. There's lots of "Here's how you..." car videos. Support the car properly. Jack stands, not a jack. I would consider bungee cords an important, not optional "tool." Hanging a caliper from the brake line (hose) is a good way to learn how to replace that line (and that is a much more involved repair). You can put a block, or extra jack stand under the caliper to support it, but if you do, still bungee it up - It will almost certainly fall off, and that fall will quite possibly damage the brake line (ask me how I know that ) Specialty tools can often be borrowed from a parts store. AutoZone, for example, has a "tool loan" program. You put a deposit down (cost of the tool), use it, bring it back in good condition, get the deposit back. You may have to purchase the parts at the store to borrow the tools. Not sure on that. You may not have to replace the rotors (discs). If they aren't too bad, they can be machined down. It depends on how bad of condition they are in. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  19. That same guy could start with any fabric he wanted, any thread that he wanted and then build his own canopy ( or 10,000 of them for sale to anyone ) by hand with a needle and thread. And no two would need to be the same. But, then along comes the FAA and says that anyone who works on it must have a Master Rigger ticket. If that is not absurd then nothing is. And no flames back at you either, JerryBaumchen Is a Master ticket required? (honest question) I have done a couple of minor repairs - Seam re-stitch and such. Nothing that would "affect the airworthiness of the canopy", just stuff to prevent further damage. Wouldn't that fall under Senior Rigger privileges? 20. I'd say most of the difference you're feeling there is due to change of model/planform... That may be. I don't know. It would be fun to try a Tri 170 or a Sabre2 190 to see how much the apparent difference is due to size and how much to planform. My point was (and is) that even changing both size and canopy model wasn't a dramatic or huge change. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 21. I agree that it is absolutely unenforceable. But I'm not sure it's totally useless. Some people actually obey the rules without the threat of penalties. I've had people ask me why they can't do a simple seam restitch on a main canopy. One guy wanted to do it by hand with a needle and thread (this was actually on a slider, not a canopy). Being able to say "because the rules say it has to be done by a rigger" is, IMO, a good thing. It helps reduce bad repairs by unqualified people. No flames from me, just an opinion. 22. Read this part. Then read it again. There shouldn't be any need to repeat the level if your instructors passed you. Tunnel time may be of help, but it shouldn't be necessary. You said you were stable, that's the big thing. If you aren't capable of doing the turns correctly, then you may have to repeat 4. Cross that bridge (jump across it ) when you get to it. 23. Well, the NFL gets non-profit status (the league, not the individual teams). And football as a whole gets billions in taxpayer money each year. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/10/how-the-nfl-fleeces-taxpayers/309448/ Edit to add link. 24. Come on. It's 2013. How many of the motorcycle guys had Go-Pros on? I'm not sure how the cops got footage from them (unless more of them were dumb enough to post it to FaceBook and YouTube). And, just like everywhere else, as soon as there's a commotion, everyone starts shooting video with their phones. I'm going to guess that there will be enough footage of this incident to figure out what really happened. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. Be realistic about your skills and abilities. Boogies often have opportunities to do stuff you've never done before. With people who don't know how good you are (or aren't).
