Legal to jump base gear from heli?
wolfriverjoe replied to potatoman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I can only speak of US rules, but jumping an expired reserve could get both the jumper and the pilot in trouble. The pilot risks his license, but both potentially face fines. That's why manifest usually checks the reserve card when a jumper checks in. The pilot is trusting that manifest is only letting people with legal gear get on the plane. And here, you only need a private to drop people too... Unless they are paying to be on the plane If you have a buddy who is willing to take you up for free to jump, that's ok. Pretty much any other situation requires that the pilot hold a commercial license. And here in the US, it can be legal to jump "anywhere you want", within certain limits. Proper type of airspace, permission of the landowner where you plan on landing, notification of Air Traffic Control (not permission). Search the term "Bandit Jump" or "Bandit Demo" for previous discussions. Some people don't like the term "Bandit" because they are legal, but that's what they are typically called. Infinity I-44 Container/Canopy Compatibility
wolfriverjoe replied to iinastynateii's topic in Gear and Rigging
I have an I-44. I have a 170 Sabre2 and a PDR 176. I ordered it new, I chose the canopies, they (Gail, actually) chose the container size. The PDR 176 goes in nicely, I haven't had to use it (yet), but when I repack it, it comes out easily with the main still in (I reach over my shoulder and pull on the reserve bridle). The Sabre2 170 fits perfectly. Not too tight, not too loose. I haven't tried to put anything else in it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Of course. Everything does. Look at the cost of the nylon over our heads. It comes from crude oil. Look at the cost in lives with wars over oil, etc. Finding any product without a long list of negatives is a fool's errand. Well, the trick is to find the shortest list of negatives, or at least the "best" negatives. And balance that off against the cost. I don't pretend that we are going to magically stop using coal today or tomorrow. But we need to look hard for an alternative. Coal is horrendously damaging to obtain and use. Gas is far better to use, but the damage from fracking to obtain it is a problem (although it is less damaging than strip mining). Wind kills birds, but then destroying their habitat through strip mining of coal and the pollution that comes with burning it causes a lot more birds to die. Nuke has issues obtaining the fuel, risks of using it (although those have been addressed to a large extent) and big issues with the spent fuel. Hydro has issues with the problems the dams cause. I'm against it. Too many pollutants, regardless of the greenhouse effect. Don't forget the "cost" of getting it out of the ground. Environmental damage from the actual mining (strip mining is just about the worst kind there is), the toll it takes on the people who mine it - both short term and long term (deaths in the mine, and health effects like black lung). Coal is "cheap and easy" in the short term, but not so much if you look at the entire picture and in the longer term. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Dance Men In Hats Yeah, I'm old enough to remember that song. You may remember the song, but the band was "Men Without Hats." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

On limited access roads, you are absolutely correct. On roads where there are cross streets and driveways, not so much. I may be going fairly slow in the left lane sometimes. It's because I am going to be turning left, and may not know exactly where, or it is going to be soon and I don't want to get up to full speed and then slam on the brakes. Can you recommend a good starter Sewing machine?
wolfriverjoe replied to Shredex's topic in Gear and Rigging
If you want a cheap domestic machine, try Goodwill or St Vincent De Paul. Or a local thrift store. Last time I was in St Vinnie's, they had 4 or 5 decent domestics - older ones that were built to last, not the current cheap stuff. Some of them included (domestic style) tables. $25 or so. Take it to a sewing shop and spend $50 - $75 for a good cleaning and tune up and you will be good to go. I was given a Pfaff 90 that's pretty old (circa 1950s). That thing is a tank. Metal head, metal gears, and so on. The guy at the shop said that it would last a long, long time if cared for properly. It's not a commercial grade machine, but it will pull E-thread just fine. I've sewn denim, heavy canvas, even leather with it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Chris Christie knew about bridge closure details
wolfriverjoe replied to Anvilbrother's topic in Speakers Corner
Have you ever driven in New York/New Jersey traffic? It's bad enough without someone deliberately making it worse. What would be the cost (in salary) for everyone who had to sit all that extra time? Doing it for political payback is pretty vindictive. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
So more cheap excuses and glib promises? My friend's order "didn't follow normal tracking procedures?" How come the numerous e-mails he sent (most of which generated zero reply) didn't alert you to the fact that you had lost track of an order? I think your responses here (or lack of them) are far more indicative. You posted the original ad on Feb 21. I responded that day about the non-delivery. A month later (and with a couple of additional posts), I get a PM from Chris. A week after that you pop back into the thread. Five weeks after the OP. I don't expect someone to sit here on Dizzydot all day, every day. But five weeks to respond to a thread that YOU started? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Buying a used/starter rig, how old should I go?
wolfriverjoe replied to Donica17's topic in Gear and Rigging
^This^ A thousand times this. Most sellers are honest. Unfortunately, the prices good gear generates entices some people to try and sell "gutter gear" for insane prices. Most of the honest sellers understand this, and are willing to have the gear inspected. Personally I won't buy anything without an independent inspection. I wouldn't sell anything without it either. Having someone else inspect it as a part of the purchase process protects me from any "It showed up and this was misrepresented" claims. Who writes the code for this place?
wolfriverjoe replied to lyosha's topic in Suggestions and Feedback
Why not? There's a three day waiting period to post in the classifieds, isn't there? A similar three day waiting period to post (or maybe just to start threads) wouldn't be totally unreasonable. The new guy would still be able to read the "member only" stuff (Bonfire, SC & Incidents) just not post. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Patriot Guard Riders statement on the passing of Fred Phelps.
wolfriverjoe replied to RonD1120's topic in Speakers Corner
Okay, but that doesn't address my question. The "convicted death row criminal" and even Bundy presumably lived the rest of their lives without continuing doing the things that they had done. I don't doubt that Bundy would have continued killing had he been able to get free, but that's another issue. To repeat the question: Does "Accepting Jesus" give someone free reign to continue doing evil, and still get into heaven? Because Fred Phelps was pretty much "evil", continuing to preach hatred after supposedly accepting Jesus. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Global warming traps scientists in ice
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, I don't remember ever having a "Polar Vortex" before. I do remember having "Strong Arctic High Pressure" systems before. And having "Cold Snaps" that resulted in a few days without seeing a temp above zero. It happens most, but not all winters in Wisconsin. And the really funny one was how we had the "Coldest Temperatures In TWENTY Years" this winter. Yeah, it hit 22 below. But it hit 19 below last year, 20 below the year before and 18 below the year before that. We (Green Bay where the TV new comes from for me) set a few "coldest" records this year. Most days with a temp below zero, coldest average temp and a few others like that. But the old record wasn't "smashed" it was just broken by a few days or degrees or whatever. Well, this thread has generated some activity. This thread was started on Feb 21. My reply about the non-delivery was that day. In the interim, I made a couple more posts about it. Last week, on the 20th (a month later), I got a message from Chris (not "weaverd", the OP) asking who hadn't gotten a suit that was ordered at Summerfest. He said his info showed all but one had been delivered. I sent back the name and contact info for my friend who ordered and paid for 3 items, but hasn't received anything but empty promises and had to work pretty hard to get even those. Chris responded that he'd get on it. I got a text from my friend the other day that Chris had e-mailed him and promised delivery in 2 weeks. We shall have to wait and see what happens. Patriot Guard Riders statement on the passing of Fred Phelps.
wolfriverjoe replied to RonD1120's topic in Speakers Corner
So "accepting the Gospel" and "Believing that Jesus is your savior" is all that's required? Preaching hatred and deliberately making people miserable, even after accepting Jesus doesn't disqualify anyone? Does "accepting Jesus" give someone a free shot at heaven, no matter what they do? (not "have done before") Or is learning his teachings and doing your best to live by them part of accepting Jesus as your savior? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Supposedly, someone got pissed at the speed cameras, and stole the plates off of the camera company's van. They then ran past all the cameras with the stolen plates. Which then generated tickets that got sent to the plate holder. I can't say if it's true or just an urban legend. But if it isn't true, it ought to be. A friend who loves books posted a thing on FB that she would be far more likely to respond to a guy in a bookstore offering to buy her a book than a guy in a bar offering to buy a drink. Hmmm. I may have to try that. And maybe the guy in the video is just looking for a girl as shallow as he is. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." What is the "Big Picture"? You keep saying that we are at "War" and you imply that illegal immigrants present some huge "Threat" to us. Big enough to suspend the Constitution (or at least the BoR). What, exactly, is that? Terrorism? Not really. The level of difficulty for terrorists (Islamic or "other) to get into the country is pretty low. Finding a "clean" guy to enter the country is pretty easy. Actually pulling it off is another issue. The "Destruction Of Our Way Of Life?" Not really. That fear was present all the way back to the beginning of the country. There was a show on PBS about the anti-immigrant sentiment back around the turn of the 20th century. It was amazingly similar to the rants and bigotry shown today (in general, not you specifically). Most of the illegals just want a better life for themselves and their families. They work the bottom jobs because that's all they have. They pay taxes (sales, gasoline, property[directly through ownership or indirectly through rent], income, SSI) and have earned in-state tuition. Welfare and other aid usually requires proof of legal status. Some of them have counterfeit stuff, but that usually won't pass a serious check by the government. So why are you so afraid of immigrants? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Welcome. Good for you to avoid the scam sites. They are pretty common. They have a website that says "Skydive in (insert any city in the US here)." And they sell you a gift certificate that you then have to travel a long way to redeem, going past numerous legitimate DZs in the process. We're a pretty small sport, as was mentioned. We also like to travel around and jump at other places. So a lot of us know each other. Since you asked, I would go for the tandem. It gives you the entire experience (full altitude, freefall) and it gives you the "safety net" of an instructor right with you. If you decide not to pursue it, the tandem gives you the best experience. If you do go for your A with static line, it will be at least 6 jumps before you get to your first delay fall, and longer before you get to full altitude. Ask your instructor to teach you, not just give you a ride. You can learn a lot on a tandem if you want to learn and the instructor is willing to teach. One of the things is canopy control and traffic patterns. Your first static line (or AFF) jump, you are solo under canopy, receiving direction via radio. Experiencing the canopy flight with an instructor can be very helpful. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." If you can change history answer your own question to your own satisfaction I see it as a question unable to be answered. I can't change history, but I can learn from it. I can see that applying this sort of technology as a requirement wouldn't have any real benefit. So why do it? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I am uncertain if the technology was even available in the past perhaps the plane that struck the pentagon, the field in PA, the world trade center. But again was it available.... I don't think it was. So it's moot. How would that have changed any of the outcome, presuming it was available? ATC knew where those planes were. They had them on radar. The only one I can think of is the Air France from 09. It went down in the middle of the Atlantic. That's the only one I can remember is recent times. And by 'recent', I'm going back 40 or 50 years.
