  1. Close. Crew required to use it above 14 or after 30 min above 12.5. Passengers must be provided with (they aren't required to use it, but it must be available) above 15. All altitudes MSL. FAR 91.211 My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that a few DZs at higher elevations have waivers that allow them to take jumpers higher without oxygen. 2. Well, I think it's the capitalist part of the Chinese Gov't that is doing this. They don't want to share it with the masses, they want to make money off of it. FWIW - I've been a bit slow here on Dizzydot now and then of late, but other places I go are normal. Where, oh where is Concrete Rebound Hammer when you need it? 3. It's football. If he helps the Rams win, the fan base will be calling for the entire team to "Go Gay." And yes, there will be lots of "Ram" jokes. Perhaps the only team that would have spawned more jokes would be the Packers. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 4. Well, he got picked. Went to the Rams in the 7th round. Which is about where a lot of the prognosticators predicted he'd get picked. Good skills, but not spectacular. Not a great overall player, but a good situational guy. If you don't follow pro football (hand-egg) reasonably closely, you may not realize that the NFL is so competitive, that the player's skills are the top consideration. How he will fit into the team (how his skills help the team on the field) is second. How he will fit into the locker room (how he will fit into the team as a member) is also there, but so is "will he stay out of jail." I think his sexual orientation was well down the list on reasons he did or didn't get picked. There are teams that will avoid picks that have "off field issues." They don't want to worry about that stuff. Other teams (Patriots are a good example) will go after players with great skills, but questionable behaviors elsewhere. Belichek may be a cheater, but he's got a hell of a good record at reforming the league's "Bad Boys." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. I was discussing acrophobia and pilots with a psychologist one time. I've read/heard that pilots are affected by fear of heights more than the average population, but it isn't an issue in the plane. (I'm a pilot, afraid of heights, but not in the plane) He suggested it wasn't fear of heights, but fear of edges. I don't know how true that is or isn't, but if fits me. On a roof, balcony, cliff, whatever. I'm not happy. In the plane, in freefall, under canopy; no problem. None at all. Although I am not terribly fond of sitting right next to the open door in the Otter or the Skyvan. Too much of an "edge" for me. But once it's time to go, I have no problem climbing out and hanging on the side of the plane. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. Honest question: Do you think it's happening more? Or has it always been happening and we're just seeing it more and more because nowadays everyone has a video camera on their phone? 7. It's also not weird or unusual (your link claims up to 30% of people have it). But snakes aren't evil, nasty or cursed. They're just snakes. Some are very dangerous. Some are a serious menace (Boa Constrictors as an invasive species in the Everglades are a good example). But unless you'd prefer to be up to your eyeballs in vermin (mice, rats, ect.) then you'd better be happy there are lots of beneficial snakes. Keep in mind that one of the reasons the Bubonic Plague was so bad was that the rats and mice were running rampant. Which was caused in part because the "powers that were" decided that cats were "evil" and should be eliminated. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. There must have been some interesting links in that search. Oh yeah. Just not the one I was looking for. Here are a few of this sort of thing: http://thoughtcatalog.com/zaron-burnett-iii/2014/04/is-that-a-gun-in-your-vagina-or-are-you-just-happy-to-see-me/ Just not the one I was looking for. I think I remember it happening somewhere local to me. But I can't find it anywhere, and it's entirely possible that I'm mixing up bits and pieces of a bunch of different stories. 9. There may be some truth to that. Cops tend to be very conservative with their equipment choices. They are very reluctant to adopt any new technology until it is well proven. How long they kept using revolvers is a good example (some still carry them). But I can't really see how the sellers would care if the cops bought standard "dumb" guns or "smart" ones. They are just resellers. The cop orders the gun, the dealer gets it from the wholesaler. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 10. Procurement isn't always about the best technology. A lot of times it has to do with historic relationships between procurement offices and sellers. Sometimes it has to do with ideology and bribery. Think about that dyed-in-the-wool Microsoft guy in IT who won't let you have anything installed on your computer except Office 2007. These days, most cops buy their own guns. They have a list of "approved" choices, and usually (but not always) a list of "approved" dealers. The individual cops are the ones who make the decision. Not a "procurement office." And AFAIK, no department has banned "smart guns" (they just refuse to require them), but none of the officers have adopted them. 11. There was one fairly recently (last year or so?) where a woman had drugs (heroin?) in her butt and a small gun in her vagina. She got busted when she didn't share the heroin with everyone. Someone who didn't get any snitched on her. It gave new meaning to the phrase "business in the front, party in the back. I'd include a link, but a quick search didn't find anything. 12. LEO won't voluntarily do it ever. Like everyone else, they don't want to get killed by gun control fantasies. But unlike everyone else, they have enough pull to get excluded from the experiments. "Smart" gun technology is a major KISS violation, adding multiple failure points for a marginal gain. And the most aggravating part about this is that LEOs are the ones who would stand to benefit the most from "smart gun" tech. A huge percentage of officers who get shot are shot with their own gun. Something like 30% IIRC. They practice gun retention on a regular basis. They have some very tricky holsters to prevent a "snatching." Having a gun that is disabled when taken from the LEO would end LEOs being shot with their own gun. But the LEOs feel that the technology isn't solid enough for them. What does that say about the technology? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  13. Which certainly seems as if there is an intentional bias in either the asking or selection of who can say what. My only info on this is what I have heard on the radio news (so no links to it). But I remember hearing that the Christians were the only ones who asked to give the prayer. The council had opened it up to any who wished to, but no other faith stepped up. If that's the case (I'm not sure that it is, but that's my understanding), then I think the ruling was correct. I'd love to see a Satanic priest ask to give the opening prayer, or an atheist or agnostic say something like: "If God does exist, he's got too much serious stuff to take care of so let's not depend on him for help, but make the best decisions we can without him" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. You are right in that it takes a bit of time for the wind to overcome your inertia. That is easily demonstrated by the "forward throw" you get when you leave the plane. The plane gives you forward velocity that you bleed off as you fall. But by the time you open (presuming a typical freefall) you are going more or less straight down (relative to the airmass), aren't you? By the time you open, you are "one with the airmass." You really become "one with the airmass" as far as the ground reference is concerned when the plane leaves the ground. Even if you just do a H&P, by the time you are fully open, the canopy is only "seeing" the air it is moving through. What the air is doing (presuming a steady wind) has zero effect. Go back to throwing a toy glider in a 747. Does it matter if you throw it toward the front or back? Or side to side? Or take a balloon in the jump plane (only inflate it part way on the ground to allow expansion). Will it float differently if you bounce it toward the front or back? Will is sit still if you don't bounce it? Edit to add: This is all presuming a steady wind. Steady in both speed and direction. No shifts in direction, no changes in speed, no turbulence or burbles. Which really never happens. Also: No. Just like forward speed through the air isn't affected, this won't happen either. If the wind is steady, the entire canopy is going sideways with the wind, no matter how strong it may be. Without a change in velocity (gust), the canopy won't care how fast or what direction the wind is blowing. Does a flag ever flutter if it's hanging off of a balloon? (in the real world, variations in speed and direction will cause minor movement) "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. Off by a few days? When you say "2 weeks" do you really mean 6? Part of my friend's order finally arrived. 9 months to the day after the order. 6 weeks after Chris quoted 2. After repeated e-mails asking what was up (after the promised 2 weeks was up). At least these were answered. But the tandem pants he ordered didn't show. Apparently, there was a miscommunication during the manufacturing process, and the 36" waist was made a 46". So the waiting continues. 16. Sort of. It wasn't a DC-3, it was a Convair. And Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant (along with Cassie Gaines and a couple others) were the only members killed. There were five of the original members left when they came back in 87. Allen Collins was in a wheelchair by then (car crash) and didn't participate. Time has taken it's toll, however, and between deaths and departures, Gary Rossington is the only original member left. 17. Might have something to do with a certain person who is pretty high up in USPA, who repeatedly did something really reckless. And got bit. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  18. True. My post above is referring to "Pure Gas", or "ethanol free" gas. It may not have been as clear as it should have. The other problem with gas mixed with ethanol is that it violates the STC and is illegal to use (It's not allowed under the STC for the reasons you note). 19. I somewhat doubt that it applies evenly across the whole organization. I would expect that owners and executives (all of them) are held to a different standard than players. I would guess that non-executive staff (coaches, trainers, ect.) are held to another standard somewhere between the above 2. But I would think that all the owners would be held to this standard. Anyone who brings this much bad publicity is going to quickly become a pariah. And Kareem Abdul Jabar had some interesting comments about the whole situation. He hammers pretty hard on all sides. http://toprightnews.com/?p=2777 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. That is true, it's part of the STC. Be there's a few places around here that sell it. At my current DZ, they know a local station that sells it and use a small tank trailer. At my old DZ, we had a fuel dealer come out and fill the tank. They didn't seem to have any problem getting it. Availability may vary by location. 21. When I transferred jobs COBRA was a joke. Extremely overpriced. I found an individual policy for way less for a couple months. Well, when I moved jobs, COBRA could be paid for retroactively. For a longer time than I was going to be without coverage at my new job. Since I didn't have any preexisting conditions that would require me to keep continuous coverage, I simply didn't pay for it. If I had needed it, I could have paid for it retroactively. This course of action was suggested by the HR person at my old job. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 22. This is something a private organization can do if legal and contractual. Good news. The government certainly can't do this kind of thing. (in otherwords, I'm thrilled to see the NBA's response, but if any gov department did the exact same thing for an internal analogous situation, I'd be outraged. I wonder who understand why.....suspect most here do - those that really do understand the difference between libertarians vs hard core dems/reps) great to see the private sector work to market responses as it should Eh, we'll see if it goes through. The franchise is property and it can be difficult to force someone to sell property. It is also a business. Preventing a business owner from being involved with the business is ridiculous. Remember when the USPA tried to kick out a DZO(s) and their business? This could fall into the same anti-trust category as the people voting him out (other owners) have significant gains to be made by forcing him to sell. The legal challenges will go on for years. Eventually I predict the NBA will buy his franchise at a significant markup just to get rid of him, after losing their lawsuits against Sterling. The franchise is part of the NBA. I would bet very heavily that the NBA has a bunch of rules written into their franchise agreement, penalties for violating those rules, and a procedure for revoking the ownership of a team. The problem that USPA had when they tried to boot Ben & Cary was that they didn't follow the disciplinary procedures. They didn't follow the rules. I''m going to guess that the NBA has enough lawyers on the payroll to make sure that they can follow all the rules and still force Sterling out "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 23. I didn't jack the price up, and I am not aware that anyone else did either (not saying it didn't happen, just that nobody I know did it). I was in favor of the 180 day and still am. Being in the upper midwest, it means one I&R right before the season starts will more than likely be good for the whole season. I don't think a 60 day span will make any real difference in the wear and tear on a rig. Any sort of damage that would make it unsafe is something that the owner should catch on a pre-jump inspection. Other places have their schedule at a year and don't seem to have any real problems with it (not arguing for or against a year, just noting that other places do it). 24. It really isn't the exhaust that creates the lead exposure. It's the accumulation of the lead in the area. The post above about not eating berries that grew next to a road is a good example. You would need to live there for any real increase in the exposure. But, as you say, what you do is up to you. Just out of curiosity, does the DZ plane use the autogas STC? 25. Atari 2600? There are still some out there. They command a premium as "Vintage." My sister and her family have our old one. It still works fine.
