Registered since 2011, but no posts and an empty profile. Also a "too good to be true" price. I don't know if it's a scam or not. But I'd be suspicious. And I'd be damned sure to protect myself if I went after it. Escrow through a trusted 3rd party for sure. If he wasn't willing to do that, then I'd walk. I didn't say they were "just stupid." I said they were thugs. So far, these thugs don't seem to be part of any organized group. They are just "radicals" who decide that people who insult Islam need to be killed. And thanks, Andy for the clarification on the Fatwa on Rushdie. I wan't aware of the direct insult of Khomeni. Well, the idea that "the FBI confiscated much of the wreckage" is fairly ridiculous. The FBI took control of the investigation because of the initial beliefs that it was a terrorist act. That's SOP. The actual wreckage, the pieces of the plane, were assembled in a hangar. There's pictures of it all over the web. I don't see any indication that any is missing. I'm not aware of any SAMs that are "stealthy." They are radar guided. Anyone being shot at can easily detect that they are being targeted (if they have the right equipment on board). They are big, round and metal. Most tests include radar tracking. I'm not a real expert, but I don't think normal radar would have any problem getting a return off them. I took a quick look and couldn't find anything. If you can find different, I welcome correction. The phrase "low speed" explosion is a relative term. High explosives are incredibly fast. DetCord goes at 26000 fps (that's twenty-six thousand feet per second) That's around 18000 mph. As was noted in the previous link, truly "high speed" impacts actually melt the metal as they punch through. And they were never able to find the exact piece of frayed wire that they could prove provided the spark. We're talking scientific level of proof, not evidentiary. Not "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt." Absolutely for certain that it was that piece of wire. But they found evidence of frayed wires, and they found frayed wires in other planes. So they are certain enough. Another link. Interestingly, the guy behind the new film reportedly never raised these questions during the investigation. http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngoglia/2013/06/22/latest-twa-800-conspiracy-theory-how-likely-is-it/ "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I'm not convinced one way or the other but there are a lot of very intelligent folks close to the investigation that think something was odd about the way it was handled. And it doesn't take a whole group of people to change the outcome of an investigation; the right person with the right access can do a bunch of damage. Back in the day I was sure it was not a terrorist act or goof by the Navy. These days I'm thinking the possibility exists. I'm willing to believe that it was a "one in a million" shot. A "perfect storm" if you will. Just the right fuel/air mixture in the "empty" tank, just the right spark from the frayed wires. It hadn't happened before because age was a factor in the damaged wiring. I don't think it would be entirely unreasonable to say that "it would never happen again, so changes aren't necessary." But there's no way that would have been accepted by the public and the "powers that be." And the changes put in place give us a much better safety margin. I can't believe that it was a bomb or a shoot down because there was no evidence of either of those. And if it had been, I believe that evidence would have been found. Keep in mind that they recovered something like 95% of the wreckage. They did a lot of tests involving the penetration of the aluminum skin. They found significant differences between the holes left from high speed (high explosives) and low speed (fuel explosion) penetrations. Citizens for quiet skies

…and to this I ask, why the hell should a couple have to get married for health insurance benefits? Because not having them is expensive? I know a couple that were engaged to be married, had the wedding planned and everything. Big wedding was set for fall. In March the guy lost his job... And his insurance. He had an ongoing medical issue. One of those "Pre-existing conditions." If he went without coverage for any amount of time, he would have been uninsurable. To keep his (then) current coverage via COBRA, it would have been more than they could afford. They had to get him on her coverage. Which could only be done if they were married. So they had a very small, quiet ceremony in March. Only a handful of people knew that they were married for the entire summer. And then they had the big, planned "wedding" in the fall. It was a wonderful event. Nothing "sham" about their marriage or love or any of that. They've been married over 15 years now. But they "had to" get married right away when it happened. That's very true. Those witnesses were taken at face value, and the claims were investigated. But none of them held up in the face of real evidence. Which isn't terribly unusual. An eye witness to James Dean's fatal car crash still insists that Dean wasn't driving. Despite all the evidence to the contrary. The good old "I know what I saw and nothing will convince me otherwise." Instead of "well, I could swear that's what I saw, but I know how unreliable that sort of thing can be, so I must be wrong." Not terribly unusual. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Not exactly "just write it off." More of a "look at the issue, weigh the evidence, look at what the promoters of each side have at stake, look at what the promoters of each side say about other things, and make a rational decision based on the whole picture." Take TWA 800 (you know, the original theme of this thread). There were a number of eyewitnesses that swore they saw an upward trail before the explosion. Makes the "shot down" theory sound more plausible. But it doesn't hold up. The wreckage didn't show any indications of impact, or any indication of explosives (other than the leftover traces from the dog exercise), the radars didn't show any indication of other things in the air or behavior of the plane consistent with a shoot down. Then study eyewitness testimony. It's accuracy (not very good), how easy it is to get someone to "remember" the wrong thing simply through the power of suggestion, the general overall problems with it. A careful and thorough examination of the facts show that there was a fuel tank explosion. So it's a lot more than "just writing it off." But some people either can't or won't do that. So they continue to believe that the US never landed on the moon, or that the contrails up in the sky are laced with dangerous chemicals or that alien lizards are really running the government. Or that CReWdogs in Florida are UFOs. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

This, this, a thousand times this. Someone (Rafflers maybe?) had a sigline: "If you want to know someone's real nature, log onto an internet forum." Or something like that. Maybe I have a "stick up my ass," but I was pretty offended by the "Bruce Jenner" thread. Someone died in a car crash, and people are making crude and insensitive jokes about one of the people involved in it. I didn't post anything about it, because it wouldn't make any difference. Some people are just like that. I have a few "FB friends" whom I have lost a lot of respect for because they post garbage that most junior high kids would find juvenile. One that comes to mind is a side-by-side of Jenner's "Wheaties" box next to a current pic of him on a "Fruit Loops" box. Someone is "different" or "strange" or whatever, so let's post pics that ridicule them. Fucking please. You look great Hannah. Keep your head held high and know that you have a lot of support from a lot of people. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Bit of difference between the "tin foil hat" conspiracy theories and the "What the fuck did those idiots con us into?" questions. Fake moonlandings, TWA 800 shot down, Sept 11th was a plot by the US government (and the Pentagon crash was faked), ChemTrails, Kennedy killed by the CIA or the Cubans or the Mob, Alien technology from Roswell at Area 51, and on and on. Pure and unadulterated crap. Anyone who looks at that stuff with any openmindedness, critical thinking and common sense will see it for what it is. Secret CIA prisons where they torture suspects? Abuses by US soldiers at a Baghdad prison? NSA spying on US citizens? BATF secretly allowing drug cartels to purchase guns in the US and get them into Mexico? All were "whistleblown" or simply leaked out because there were too many people that knew about it. Going into Iraq based on lies? Ridiculously optimistic estimates of costs in both dollars and lives? Foolish belief that a US installed government would be welcomed and work out? Yup. Mostly because those in power were after bigger things. Like Cheney's PNAC buddies and oil company cronies after Iraqi oil. They pulled off a hell of a con job, and in a perfect world would be held accountable. But I doubt that will happen. But those are 3 different arguments about 3 very different things. They have to be able to get there, don't they? They can't get out of their driveway, down their street or out of their town. And they need somewhere to park at the ski hill, don't they? Someone has to plow out the parking lot at the ski hill. And all the snow removal/earth moving equipment is busy. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I don't think that they have that sort of "long term" goal. Not a "lets get out of hand, so that the government clamps down on our people so that we can provoke a real revolt" sort of plan. They are simply thugs who can't abide anyone "dissing" their prophet. So they, like any thug, try to intimidate people into compliance. And when the intimidation doesn't work, they lash out violently. The Ayatollah's death threat against Salman Rushdie is exactly the same sort of thug tactic. Scare people into silence. I highly doubt that would be possible. There would be someone who would leak it. (that's also one of the arguments against the 9/11 conspiracy bullshit - there's no way something that big could be kept secret) There were a lot of spooky coincidences that happened. The bomb residue coming from a "Bomb Dog Search Exercise" is just one of them. And it's just that, a strange coincidence. They did a pretty solid job of tracing the funky "click" in the comms to frayed wires in the center tank (and found the same frayed wires in the same spot in other planes). They also did a pretty amazing job of recovering a large percentage of the wreckage. Someone (NatGeo Channel? Discovery Channel? History Channel?) did a really good show on the whole investigation. They looked at all the conspiracy theories (mainly "bomb on board" and "shot down by the military") and did a thorough job of showing how & why the investigation rejected them and came to the conclusion it did. What is the largest caliber weapon you have fired?
wolfriverjoe replied to riggerrob's topic in Speakers Corner
It was a German Stg 44. For some strange reason, a lot of German tanks didn't have "internal" machine guns. Mainly the later "Elephant" self-propelled guns. They were most commonly used to "clean off" the other tanks. The Soviet Partisans had a lot of success against German tanks with magnetic bombs and Molotov Cocktails. The magnetic bombs were partially defeated with a "stucco-like" concoction called "Zimmermit." It kept the magnets from getting close enough to the metal to stick. They came up with the curved barrel (Krummlauf) as a "better than nothing" way to shoot the Partisans off the tanks. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." My understanding is that the data belongs to the owner of the device. Or any survivors. The Florida double fatal is my baseline for this. The NOK declined to send the CYPRESs in to AirTec for data extraction. So nobody knows what happened. I have heard of police investigations taking custody of a CYPRES, and sending it in to retrieve the data. Supposedly there's a police detective that will supervise the process to maintain 'chain of custody' for evidence purposes. I remember reading this on here somewhere, but my memory may be faulty. I searched around a bit, but can't find anything to confirm it. And I'm not a lawyer, nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn last night, so take all this for exactly what it's worth. I voted yes, but I wouldn't be annoyed because I wouldn't use a "large scale florist network" in the first place. I don't do it often, but I'll get some local recommendations on a good florist. A local one. Then call them directly and order exactly what I want. And make sure they understand that if they can't do it, let me know before they make any substitutions. Doing it the week of Valentine's Day didn't help either. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

If you could change ONE thing about the US
wolfriverjoe replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in Speakers Corner
I like that one... Thread de-rail, but what do you all think of my generation (call it...25-30) in terms of our work ethic? I'd call it about the same as any other. Some are amazing, some are really good, some are so-so, some are pretty bad, some are really shit. Anyone who thinks that the "Kids Today" are that different from the kids of (insert any time period here) is either fooling themselves about how bad the kids today are, or (more likely) fooling themselves about great the kids were from that time period. A lot of things change, technology mostly, but people don't. Not that I've seen anyway. And I like the idea of holding politicians accountable for their work. Either make what they say on the legislative floor subject to oath (and penalties for perjury) or base their pay on what they accomplish. We had a recent proposal from the governor about drug testing welfare and unemployment recipients. My comment was (and is) test the gov, legislators, and their entire staff. After all, they receive public money, just like the welfare people, don't they? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
