I have not been in Germany since '98. And it is very tough to phonenetically show how to pronounce words over the internet. But let me give it a try. Stein = Shtine Mueller = Muurler - I used to play ball with a Mueller; and he was my accountant for a number of years. This is how he said to pronounce it. Krueger - Can't do it - Maybe Kreyger Heitpas = Hite pas - Not good but maybe Christel, where are you when we need you? Hey, it was a try, Jerry Baumchen Hi Jerry, Very true that pronunciation over the internet is hard. Yours are probably closer than mine.

It depends. Some places want an Associate's Degree in Police Science or similar (2 years). Others want a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice or similar (4 years). Other places have no educational requirements. In any case, potential candidates have to become 'certified.' The process and requirements vary from state to state, but involve knowing the laws, qualifying with weapons, qualifying behind the wheel of a car, that sort of thing. Again, depending on the department and the candidate's background, the "Police Academy" can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Are You Going to Watch the Supermoon Lunar Eclipse Tonight?
wolfriverjoe replied to oldwomanc6's topic in The Bonfire
No. First off, lunar eclipses are pretty anti-climactic. The moon goes red. I've seen several, and one through a pretty good telescope. Second, the "supermoon" is more than just a little bit of hyperbole. Yes, it's closer. Yes it's bigger. But not by enough to be noticeable by anyone but the most attentive. As someone who has a last name ( it is German ) that gets mangled all of the time; my thoughts are that the name is John's and he can pronounce it anyway that he wants. The rest of us should oblige him. My name is pronounced ( I have been told ) substantially different depending upon what part of Germany that you are in. C'est la vie, Jerry Baumchen PS) Any idea on what 'Baumchen' means? I was taught that for most German names, the first vowel is silent and the second is pronounced. Stein = "stine" Mueller = 'miller' or 'meller' Krueger = 'kreeger' Heitpas = 'hippas' So Boehner = 'beener' or 'beyner' or 'binner' "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Teen suspended for protecting blind teen from beating

Because it would mean admitting that Don is right. As he is. About this situation, and about the PP situation. Which are strikingly similar. One is an inflammatory, demonstrably false accusation of wrongdoing by an institution known for perpetuating lies to gain publicity and further it's agenda... And so is the other. What is the weirdest cult movie you have ever seen?
wolfriverjoe replied to oldwomanc6's topic in The Bonfire
Kinda depends on how "cult" is defined. Sam Raimi (Evil Dead movies) makes some pretty odd stuff. He also made the Sharon Stone/Gene Hackman gunfight movie, "The Quick and the Dead" which was hackneyed, cliched, and yet not all that bad. Lots of other "names" in it. Paul Bartel & Mary Woronov made some pretty odd stuff too. Eating Raoul was one of the biggest, but they also made Death Race 2000, a really cheesy Cannonball Run ripoff (with David Carradine) and a few others. The Wall & Heavy Metal were both favorites of mine. I also really liked "Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension." Conventional in many respects, it was still a very, very odd story. And full of lots and lots of little jokes that you have to watch the movie a few times to catch. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So did Jeb: i0.wp.com/americannewsx.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/sandersphotobomb.jpg Ahhh... Thank you, professor. I remembered the "Repubs for Bernie" T-shirt pic, but "misremembered" that they did it to Walker too. No wonder I couldn't find it. Again, wait until just before the pic is taken, then (in this case) whip open the jackets to do the "gotcha." Normally, I find that sort of "gotcha" pretty lame. If it's done to anyone I have any respect for, I don't find it funny. But these so-called "presidential candidates" are so pathetic, I find it rather amusing. Nerdgirl left because the "signal to noise ratio became unbearably low." As in too much noise. I agree that she had an amazingly insightful view, and an amazingly open mind. She still does. And while there are certainly a few liberal trolls, the majority of the "I know you are but what am I" seem to be coming from the right wing. And the centrist/moderate/middle of the road types (DanG is one of the most notable) get called "liberal" on a regular basis. I agree that the conservative types tend to use "liberal" as a pejorative towards anyone who disagrees with them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." That's why you are seeing the responses you are seeing. The same stupid shit killing or maiming people over and over again. Glad to see that you are deciding to "not be stupid." And I hate to tell you this, but you will lose friends. No way around it. Someone once said: "If you are stupid, careless or reckless, you stand a pretty good chance of getting seriously hurt or killed doing this. If you aren't, you will see your friends die or get seriously hurt from something stupid, careless or reckless." The really fucked up part about it is that you get used to it. No. When the consequences of a bad decision are as serious as they are in skydiving, people will tell you the truth. It may be unpleasant, but it's the truth. The video of Sangi's accident is a stark reality of what can happen. If you don't understand that, you really need to step away from the sport for a bit. You got a lot of "You're going to die" comments because far, far too many people have died jumping canopies that were too small for them. There have been more than a few people who died under small canopies who knew what they were doing, and just made the 'wrong mistake at the wrong time' and didn't survive the error. People are blunt on here, going so far as to "predict" a date to make it clear that this is serious. As was noted above, too many younger people are "invincible." They say that they understand the risk. They say that they are willing to accept the consequences. But they don't really. They truly don't believe that it can happen to them. They won't admit that to anyone else. They may not even admit it to themselves. Your attitude and comments are very typical of a 'young hotshot" who is "above average" (or at least believes so). What is known as "Madd Skilz." Whether or not you really are that type, I don't know. All we have to go by is your written word. So the reaction here is typical. A lot of that type get hurt. Some just have a close call. And often quit after that, saying something like "I really didn't realize it could happen to me." Some get killed. The Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino bombing of 1980
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks for posting that. I knew some of the story, and a bit about the bomb, but not to that level of detail. Amazing how well he thought out the bomb, and how poorly he thought out the money delivery plan. Even if the pilot hadn't misread the (poorly written) directions, he never would have gotten away. The FBI is pretty good at catching extortionists at the money drop. They don't play fair and follow the directions. The number of times anyone has gotten away with any real quantity of cash is very, very low. DB Cooper is one. Also the only completed air piracy in the US. The bomb was pretty cool. No way in, no way to disable, no way to nothing. It was going to go off. BUT... It wasn't a "real" bomb. No wires, no big digital clock counting down, none of that. I see... so people who break the law while trying to get into the country can fuck off, but people who object to corporate bosses breaking the law can also fuck off? Hmmm.... In the 2 examples above, it looks like the two "corporate bosses" were found guilty of ...breaking the law! I'm for that. ...and for Capitalism. Looks like the system is working. But, it's a big system and sometimes a corporate law breaker gets away with it. Just like sometimes folks who illegally enter or remain in the country get away with it. The problem is that very, very few corporate executives face any sort of penalty or accountability for what the company does. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." First off, there's a difference between "Not having fun because of fear" and "reckless and dangerous behavior' Second, what about 'false confidence.' You are getting the "shitstorm" because too many people have seen "you" before. Too many of "youse" have made the decision, and paid a very high price for it. There are instructors out there who will tell beginners that it's ok to progress fast. I have no problems calling them idiots. To their face if necessary. You want to downsize to a 135, yet haven't landed your 150 on rears yet. Why not? What if a toggle or steering line breaks? You also haven't done any induced speed landings either. Again, why not? If you want a beginning of an idea of what it's like to land a smaller canopy, make yours go faster on approach. It's not a direct comparison, because the flare will be different, but it's a start. But it's your choice. And you will probably be ok. After all, if you are careful, you might get away with it long enough to learn how to handle it, so when (not if, when) something funky happens on landing, you don't hurt yourself... Much. But is it worth it? With 80 jumps on the 150, you are just learning the flight characteristics. And it's easier to learn and more forgiving to make mistakes (if you don't make any mistakes, you aren't pushing your limits) under a bigger canopy. A lot of people who downsized fast have later said that it was a mistake and that they were lucky not to have gotten hurt. They also said that downsizing too fast slowed their progress instead of helping it. What's going to be more fun - A larger canopy that you can push to your limits (and eventually the canopy's)? Or a small, twitchy "rocket" that you can only land straight in because you have to be "careful"? One that you are rightly afraid of, because it's limits are so far beyond your own? You seem to have decided to stay on the 150. Good on you. I hope when (if) you decide to downsize, that you do it for the right reasons, and with the proper skills and experience to do so safely. See post #75. I guess I don't consider a NBA team owner on a discussion panel show to be that authoritative. (not trying to be snarky, I just don't like Mark Cuban all that much). NPR story: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/09/16/440820557/high-school-student-shows-off-homemade-clock-gets-handcuffed He told the teacher "That doesn't look like a bomb to me" and while it says: What teenage kid can offer a good reason/excuse for a lot of stuff that they do? And once you have the principal, cops, all that, leaning over you, demanding an explanation, the kid is going to be intimidated to the point that he won't be able to give a "good explanation", whether he had one or not. I honestly don't know if racism was a factor. But it's easy to assume. Maybe the teacher over-reacted, maybe not. But the cops certainly did. Anyone with any experience or training can clearly see that it's not a bomb. As I posted above, no detonator, no explosives, no shrapnel. Just a circuit board, a lot of wires and a digital display. You do have to admit however that times have changed slightly. Whether we like it or not we live in a period which is much more aware / paranoid about the possibility of deliberate terrorism, and instructions are much easier to come by on the internet than it used to be. I can certainly see that if ANY student brought in a bunch of electronics with a counter attached to it and then refused to talk about it with a teacher then that would set alarm bells ringing. Was the response over the top? Maybe. But what if it HAD been a bomb and some kid had just blown up a school after showing the device around and nobody said anything - the outcry would be a hundred times worse than it is now. At best the kid made a dumb error in judgement. I did similar when I was his age. I'm also not discounting the possibility that he deliberately wanted a prank or attention - again, because I did the same when I was younger. While I agree that times have changed, and caution (and overreaction) are much more common, I don't recall seeing anywhere that he "refused to talk about it." He explained that it was a clock. They kept asking what it was and he kept saying it was a clock. A teacher who has no clue what a bomb looks like, outside of bad TV was suspicious. And it spiraled out of control from there. The school wasn't evacuated. The bomb squad wasn't called. The kid never made any threats, or even showed it off in a threatening way. Apparently, it "beeped" and the teacher wanted to know what made the noise. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And to add to the Professor's comments: If I was on a jump plane and an unannounced barrel roll took place, the pilot DZO and I would be having a fairly unpleasant conversation after I got back on the ground. "What the fuck does he think he's doing?" Would be the main point. Aerobatics in an unapproved airplane, with paying passengers on board? "Unacceptable", "Illegal", "Dangerous", "Stupid" are all words that only start to describe this kind of behavior. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." obsessed after tandem // also fitness questions ??
wolfriverjoe replied to chlo's topic in Introductions and Greets
A few thoughts, in no particular order: When I landed after my first static line jump, my first words were "I am so doing that again." I didn't know how far I was going to take it, but I knew that I had to do it again. And again. And again. Your aerial work will help. Gymnastics, dance (ballet in particular), any activity that teaches you to put your body into a specific position helps... In freefall. But gear knowledge, airplane procedures, emergency procedures, canopy control (including landing pattern, collision avoidance and the actual landing) are all important too. You will have a bit of an advantage, but only in one specific area. Upper body strength is somewhat important, but you don't need a whole lot. One thing you can do is get yourself some "Thera-bands" - the big rubber bands used for rehab after injury or surgery. loop it over the top of a door or something and pull down. But if you do aerial silks, I'm guessing you can do at least one or two "chin ups" (hanging from your arms, pull your body up). If you can do that, you are fine. Committing to an entire lifestyle after one experience isn't the best idea. Keep in mind that if you turn your "love" into a job, it will become work. I know people that burned out by turning it into a job. Personally, after a few summers of spending almost my entire freetime at the DZ (club DZ that got very small at the end - the few of us left did a lot of work), I was approaching burnout. On the flip side of it, it can be a lot of fun. I also know people that work the sport and love it. But they thought it over very carefully before jumping in and made sure they took steps to do stuff outside of jumping to keep some sort of life balance. Your training progression can take a variety of paths. Talk to the DZ. Some places do tandems that are actual "training jumps". You learn a few different things. Canopy control is one of the things tandem can teach very well. Tandem was originally developed to do the same things as "dual instruction" in airplane flight training. Or you could do a few AFF jumps, knowing full well you will have to do repeats. Personally, I would suggest getting through AFF and to your first license (A here in the US, not sure what NZ has) before you commit to the school. Alternatively, get through uni, get a good job, and then go after it as a sport. Having enough income to afford it as "fun" is a much better position to be in. What's there to "armchair quarterback"? At first glance, opening fire from a helicopter in the air seems a bit sketchy. BUT... The people they were chasing were suspects in violent home invasions. They practice shooting from the air on a regular basis. Nobody else got hurt (outside of the collision after the "pursuee" driver bailed). Apparently this is the 7th "Shoot them from the air" incident. They've been doing it for a while. Presuming that they followed the use of force protocols, I don't have a problem with it. Presuming a competent pilot and reasonably smooth air, a helicopter can provide a pretty stable platform to shoot from. I'm going to guess that the department had to demonstrate a certain level of accuracy in practice before they took this out into the "real world."
