It's an interesting question. First off, regardless of the states where it's legal, it's still illegal under federal laws. So anyone operating under federal laws is still subject to sanctions if they fail a test. That applies to me as a truck driver. I'm subject to random testing (and it seems to be truly random, not what Ryoder was suggesting where he was). If I fail, I'm in trouble. I think as long as it's illegal under federal law, employers can refuse to hire anyone who fails a pre-employment test. I do know that a number of years ago (mid-90s) Wisconsin ruled that employers couldn't refuse to hire because of legal activities. The specific example was smoking. Some places were testing for nicotine in the pre-employment test. The rationale was that smokers had much higher health care costs and had been shown to take more sick days (my understanding is that this is correct). But there was a lawsuit that ruled that this was illegal discrimination. I know specifically of someone who failed a nicotine test, wasn't hired, and ended up being hired later after this ruling. She was a good, reliable worker. She hadn't made any 'legal threats', just called up and asked if she would be considered for hire after the ruling that the testing that kept her from being hired was discriminatory. How this sort of thing would apply to this sort of thing is an interesting question. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Clearly you don't understand Chicago politics. Having "D" after your name is no indication of being liberal, conservative, green, libertarian, or anything else. It's just a requirement if you wan't to participate at all. And recall that Illinois Governor George Ryan (R) was imprisoned for 5 years on a federal corruption conviction in 2006. 4 of the last 7 Illinois Governors ended up going to prison. It's not a 'party' thing. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

so now people like you are going to be happy with the guy who is eviscerated for being misogynistic against women keeping women's resumes and killing dogs on top of the car? Holy shit hellis going to freeze over.. Your blatant hypocrisy is a thing to behold Well, your facts (or lack of accurate ones) is too. Go away, sonny. Adults are talking. Projects of what magnitude? Building a small-to-medium sized building? Filling it with artifacts from the sport? Nominating deserving people from the sport? The one you are willing to destroy the stiffeners, pull out the stitching and unseat the grommets on? The one on which you are willing to work waaaaay to hard to pack? The one you are willing to risk the reserve not opening because it's overstuffed? I would suggest rethinking your priorities. What's the smallest reserve you would feel safe landing in a small, tight area, while dealing with the emotional aftermath of a mal & cutaway? What size rig will comfortably hold that reserve and a 135? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Hit the "quote" button on someone's post and it loads it automatically. Alternatively, put their name in "quotes" inside the square brackets. Also, anytime you want to figure out how someone did something, simply hit the 'quote' button on their post. The text, including whatever markup techniques someone is using, will show up in the text box. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It's a hell of a lot more than 'spilled milk' Its a huge expenditure of our money into a project that has been stumbling and bumbling along for a loooong time with little to show for itself but a bunch of famous names and a collection of vintage equipment in storage. You seem to think that studies and 'research' are understandable uses of the money. That may well be true for a new project, but this hasn't been a 'new' project for some time. They had a spot of land donated, but they seem to want to go elsewhere. The idea of being by a tunnel is a fools errand. The idea that people trying out the tunnel would spend more money to go through a skydiving museum is not totally stupid, but I don't see it as the attraction that it's being promoted as. The idea that going through a museum of old gear and old people would motivate someone to take up the sport is silly. The fact that the museum folks claim that the museum will be built next to a new tunnel that I-Fly won't confirm as real is one more thing that makes me really wary of what they are going to end up doing with the money. If it could be confirmed that the tunnel will be built and the museum will actually go next to it, great. But that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems far more likely that this is another 'snipe hunt', like so many the project has gone on throughout its history. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Meh if you feel guilty about it plant a couple of pine trees. Or don't drink bottled water. Seriously. I drive truck and I've pulled loads (44,000 pound loads) of bottled water from the plants in Allentown PA, Indianapolis and north of Grand Rapids MI. I would take them hundreds of miles to grocery distribution centers. Then another truck would take them to the stores. That's a lot of fuel used to move something that comes out of a faucet. New Girl, getting started on AFF

Welcome. From one point of view, your concern about canopy flight and landing is reasonable. Landing safely is the ultimate goal of any jump. Dealing with malfunctions can be intimidating. Proper patterns are important. Collisions are really bad. Judging height on short final and timing the flare takes practice to do it well. BUT... None of it is all that hard. Mals are pretty rare. You need to be ready, but the EPs are usually pretty simple (at least at the beginning) and you likely won't need them. Proper patterns take a bit of time to learn, and because of that, students are usually segregated from the 'rest of the crowd'. You'll exit last, open high, and descend slower than everyone else.By the time you enter the pattern, you'll be (safely) alone. You will likely have radio guidance the first few times, but even without, you will be under a large, slow and forgiving canopy. When (not if) you screw up the flare, you will just land a bit hard. You are not alone with these concerns. As with everything else, discuss it with your instructors. The suggestion of watching others land, while an instructor points out what they are doing, how they are doing it and what they are doing right (and wrong) is a good idea. The idea of doing another 'instructional tandem' isn't entirely bad. Having an instructor right behind you, talking you through the entire landing process can be very helpful. Well deserved, but I really admire Jimmy Carter for what he's done since leaving office. Jimmy Carter did far, far better as an 'Ex-President' than he did as President. Truly a decent human being. Perhaps his decency was his biggest fault/liability. He didn't seem to understand how truly evil some people are. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." SCOTUS rejects Trump's asylum restrictions
wolfriverjoe replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
That's not really true. The teachings of Jesus are primarily love and tolerance, kindness and giving. I know a lot of Christians (of all varieties) who try their best to practice those teachings in everything they do. I know some people who aren't Christians (or any other religion for that matter) who practice these things too. There are just a LOT of people who claim to be Christian, but substitute hatred & bigotry for love and tolerance, fear & violence for kindness and giving. Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?

Are you really that detached from reality? Flynn & Manafort are both going to go to prison. Because of their connections to Russia. Trump himself admitted paying off Daniels. Cohen is going to prison for it. And the reason nobody called for Obama to step down for his campaign finance violations is because they were reporting violations. Some forms had the wrong date on them, some forms were filed later than required. Who is being led around by a 'nose ring'? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Did you even read what I wrote? Where did I equate AGW with a nuclear exchange? I know what nukes can do. I know who has them (at least who has been credibly accused of having them). And I know full well that desperate people do desperate things. Like launching nuke when their entire population is in danger of extermination. And even the small amount of rise we've experience so far has had some pretty impressive effects on coastal flooding. Norfolk VA is a good example. A big part of the problem is that the land is sinking, but rising sea levels play their part. And even though the flooding isn't due entirely (or even mostly) to actual rising sea levels, it shows what even a modest increase can do. OK, page 5 (you will need to rotate it clockwise): https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4210859/8-16-2017-AuditFYEnding2016.pdf The $419M is the organizations total expenditures for the year. I had also never seen data showing that the NRA was much of a cash cow as far as campaign finance goes. In fact what makes them so relevant is the bang for the buck that legislators get out of them. They're more of church than a company because of the almost religious adherence to the modern interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. This is probably also what made the group attractive to the Russians since once its members get an idea in their head they're almost fanatical about it. Take the Yeti cooler debacle, for example. So, I'm assuming the author is simply uninformed. In fact the reports from even the most leftist sources put the number at about $2500 including Torshin's $1000 lifetime membership. The biggest political clout that the NRA brings is votes. Not unlike the AARP, NRA members vote. And the HQ sends out postcards every election. Not just national ones. State & local too. They do a lot of 'grass roots' campaigning. While 3 to 5 million (nobody seems to know for sure) members aren't a whole lot, the idea that that many people (or a large percentage of it) can be instructed to vote either for or against someone is a very powerful tool. Especially in close elections. And they do have a lot of expenses outside political campaigns. In fact, the political wing of the NRA (NRA-ILA) is just a part of what they do. It does, however, get the most attention from its critics. Education and training are their biggest focus. Just about every firearms or Hunter's Safety instructor is "NRA Certified". Most course material comes from them. Ranges and facilities are held to their standards, competitions are too. The biggest ones (shooting equivalent of our Nationals) is held at their facilities. Quick question from an old fart
wolfriverjoe replied to oldwomanc6's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
So the question is really "How much is a jump ticket?", right? First off, turbines go to 14, unless they are doing competition passes, which are 10500. Most piston planes (182, 206) go to 10. Second off, the ride is TO altitude. The jump is from altitude, and that's free (you pay for the ride up, not the fall down). Last year, going from memory: SDC - 24 CSC - 27 SDMW - 24 That's 'flat rate.' Various specials and deals are available, which can bring the cost down. There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998
wolfriverjoe replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, there's nothing so bad that it has no good effects. And there's nothing so good that it has no bad effects. Increasing the CO2 will help plants grow. And increasing temps will allow crops to be grown at higher latitudes, which have more daylight in the summer months. If you've ever seen what comes out of a garden in Alaska, this idea has a lot of appeal. But I would think that the downsides are worse. Increasing temps allow insects to survive winters where extreme cold used to kill many off. Pine beetles are a good example. Pine forests in the Northern Rockies are dying off rather quickly because the pests that used to be largely killed off by temps that were well below zero for a week or more at a time are surviving when the temps don't go and stay that low. Increasing temps are pretty bad for some types of ocean life. Coral is one. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is in big trouble. Other reefs in other places are too, but the GBR gets the press. If the sea rises significantly, large areas will be under water. There will be huge numbers of people displaced. Where will they go? And, if the lower latitudes become too hot and dry for crops to be grown on a large scale, then there will be BIG problems. One of the more frightening scenarios is India. They have over a billion people. What would happen if much of the sub-continent becomes inhospitable? Are those people going to just stay there and die? Or are they going to try to migrate north. To China, Pakistan & Russia? And if C, P & R say "no, you can't come here" and start killing off the migrants, will the remainders just stay where they are and die? Or will they use the nukes that India has to fight back? And what sort of consequences would a nuclear exchange have? Personally, I think we're pretty much screwed. We (as in the overall human race) won't do anything substantive until it becomes very obvious that the problems are serious. At which time it will be too late. The planet will survive, humans will likely survive. But a lot of individual humans will die. And so will a lot of species currently living on earth. It will be a very, very different planet in a couple hundred years. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Mueller investigation - making money for America
wolfriverjoe replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
That is my understanding too. For example, fourth offense OWI in Wisconsin results in seizure of the offender's car. If there is still debt owed, the car is gone and the owner still owes the bank. In this particular case, I think Manfort has enough money and is old enough that he likely has little debt on his properties. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Probably not. This is likely just the latest manifestation of the isolationist viewpoint of your inward looking President. It is completely in character for him. It is capricious and foolhardy but emotionally satisfying for him. In other words, just what you would expect from a dotard with power. Very true. The problem is that it's a very beneficial action for Putin. So the question remains: Is it stupidity or following orders? It could easily be either one.
