False equivalence. Nobody is calling for 'open immigration'. Many are calling for more avenues for legal immigration. That doesn't negate previous calls for 'clamping down' on illegal immigration or going after those who exploit them. Not exactly. Although I wouldn't suggest going below zero without plugging in, modern diesels will cold start a lot better than even 10 years ago. The shop I park the tractor at has plug ins for all the trucks, but the power is on a thermostat. I can plug it in at any time, but the cords don't get power until the temp hits 10F (above). The techs in the shop say that it's the technology of the starter motor more than anything else. We still use 15w-40 oil in the motors, and they will crank 'briskly' at colder temps. Well, by definition, a 'generalization' is simplistic. And while there are zillions (generalizing ) of examples where it doesn't fit, I can see it being reasonably true overall. Take most food, for example. Crops grown in the ground need fuel. The fields have to be prepped, planted, treated & harvested. Those are done with diesel fuel. The crops then get transported to a processor/packager. More fuel. It takes power to process & package the stuff. Primarily electricity, but that power still comes with a 'carbon price' Then transport to distribution warehouses & stores. More fuel. While a portion of the cost to purchase, say a can of corn, does include the labor involved, some of that labor cost can be translated to fuel. The fuel the people use to get to & from work, that sort of thing. While that does end up counting some 'carbon footprint' twice, I think it's not a terrible way to compute it, overall (and that's a generalization too ). Having lived in Maine, Michigan and Vermont my knowledge is that it just gets colder and the snow gets deeper for longer. The western part is the same as it's northern US counterparts. Northern plains are northern plains (Alberta & Saskatchewan same as North Dakota & Montana, British Columbia similar to Washington). Anyone who lives north of I-80 or I-90 is familiar with it. I've spent a fair amount of time in eastern Canada for work. Nice folks. Similar climate*, better than average coffee. Roads are rough, but similar to Michigan. Well, we've been through this more than once. But, just one more time... My seal on a rig shows that it was airworthy when I packed it. It shows that the reserve pin has not been pulled. That's it. That other points of view may have merit. To be so closed-minded and intolerant that NO point of view other than your own is worth considering is to stop growing. Many right-wing folks talk about "American Exceptionalism" as if it's a trait exclusive to American & Americans that makes this country as great as it is and has been. As if it's a inherent, natural trait that we have. What itreally is is the conglomeration of ideas, backgrounds and cultures that various immigrants brought to America over the years. Many closed minded folks over the years have tried to limit or eliminate immigration. You know, 'we don't want those types of people coming here.'. Right now it's Hispanics. But in the past it's been every group. Italians, Irish, Eastern Europeans, Chinese, and on and on. Fortunately, until recently (past 30 or 40 years or so), there was little movement towards that. Immigrants were allowed to enter and contribute to society. And they often thrived. And made huge contributions to the country. It's often been the children of these immigrants who made the biggest contributions. Steve Jobs, who's father came from Syria, is a classic example. There are other factors that "Make America Great" (and it's already great). Rule of law and societal freedom of movement are two. But it's diversity, the collection of different cultures and viewpoints, the 'melting pot' if you will, that is the biggest factor. I think the 'funniest' part of that is the point that all of the terrorists caught coming into the US have been captured at airports. Not the border. In mountain biking circles there are numerous cases of trail use nazis sabotaging runs with things as lethal as neck high wire and covered pits with punji sticks. They risk going to prison for GBH, or even attempted murder. They still do it, because they're so confident they wont get caught. As you just demonstrated so perfectly, noise abatement nazis can feel the same way with drones - with the added bonus that they don't even need to risk having someone's death or paralysis on their conscience. I would think that the situational differences would be significant. For instance, Gatwick is a huge place. There are virtually tens of thousands of people would be potential suspects. If it were to happen at Mile-Hi, for instance, the suspect list would be a lot shorter. For an Otter at 70 or 80 knots, vs an airliner at 150 or more, the threat of damage and ability to avoid it are a lot different too. Besides, at a DZ, there are often a few drones around. Using another drone to follow the intruder back to it's home wouldn't be all that hard. Using one as a Kamikaze would also be possible, but would have potential consequences, and may not provide any usable info. And, as far as the 'silence' on the investigation goes, the Brit cops are far less willing than Americans to share that sort of stuff with the press.
