China 'willfully inflicted coronavirus upon the world'
wolfriverjoe replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
It's always easier & more effective if the people you are trying to blame have a different color skin, different appearance, speak an entirely different language (with a very different 'alphabet'). Much easier to treat such people as "them". Compare the difference in the attitudes towards Germans vs Japanese during WW2. (Hint: How many Germans were taken from their homes and put into concentration camps?). -
Technically, the WHO never offered tests to the US (I've had too many Trumpettes harp on this). They usually only offer test kits to the poorer countries. The US can afford it's own tests and should have had them. Trump could have requested test kits from WHO, but never did. A bit pedantic, but that's how it goes.
-
Please show one example of Trump telling the truth, having valid information, showing real leadership or doing anything correct during this. How about this: Please show an example of Trump expressing sympathy or condolences to those who are sick or have lost loved ones. Someone commented that there was a lot of hate for Trump in here. Please explain why there shouldn't be. Use actual facts, not speculation. The man is a dangerous buffoon. He clearly cares only for himself. He has made the situation worse. Why does your worship of him blind you to this?

I'll go with 'entitled asshole'. I really don't like Feinstein. And I've gone from 'meh' to strongly disliking Ron Johnson (and he represents my state). If there were two senators I'd really like to see face consequences for their behavior, those two are near the top of the list.
-
Well, Ron Johnson, Diane Fienstein and Jim Inhofe have apparently been cleared. Burr & Loeffler still look guilty as hell. I haven't heard any others being mentioned.
-
I'm seeing reports that Michigan will too. On a slightly different note, a friend is retired anesthesiologist. He said he's hearing a few very scary things about this disease. About 1 in 6 who need ICU care and recover had enough lung damage to require oxygen for the rest of their life. And some of the ICU patients in China survived because they were placed on a Heart/Lung bypass machine. There aren't a whole lot of those out there (he said that there were 2 local to him and me, serving about 100k people). Note: The above is not confirmed, but it comes from a source I trust for this sort of thing.

Wisconsin going under a 'stay at home' order tomorrow. Same as a 'shelter in place', but less 'martial law sounding'. Indiana will be too.
-
Very true. The post by Bill that you quoted (didn't carry over in my quote - still not entirely used to the new system) mentioned being sick and getting healthy.
-
It's not certain, but likely. Some of the reports of re-infection are likely incorrect. OTOH, it seems like it takes a lot longer than 2 weeks to recover. And I've read that even after all the symptoms are over, the person can still carry the virus and infect others. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-22/doubt-over-contracting-coronavirus-covid-19-twice/12075878
-
Once you've had it and gotten over it, you have the antibodies in your system. You can't get it again. People who've had it and recovered can go out and be in contact with infected people without worry.

But it's in the Constitution, it's essential
wolfriverjoe replied to JoeWeber's topic in Speakers Corner
Meh. They should have thought of it earlier. Kinda like the TP run. You either are prepared or you aren't. Edit to add: I'm part of the local shooting range. It's a club-run outfit, with a number of us who are the 'leadership', making decisions on everything. Wisconsin has an order banning indoor gatherings of more than 10 people. Lots of other stuff is shutting down, even stuff that doesn't fall under the order. The group decided that the range should shut down, at least for the two weeks. A decision will be made to extend the closure or to open later. Of course, some dipstick had to complain, saying that 'keeping skills sharp is needed, along with function checking the weapons to make sure they work properly'. Really. -
Hi Jerry, You are absolutely correct. Triple 'pup' trailers (the short ones) or 'turnpike doubles' (2 long trailers in tandem) are only allowed on certain roads, not even all of the interstates. Eastern half of the US is primarily on the toll roads in IN, OH, PA & NY. Most exits have 'makeup/breakup lots' where, as you suspected, pull off into those lots and break the triples up. I'm not Ken, but I drive a big truck for a living.

Shelter in place? That's for the little people.
wolfriverjoe replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
He's said a lot more stupid shit than that, Professor. And there's a huge (I mean HYOOOOOOGE!!!) difference between blaming the person who's supposed to be our 'leader', yet says 'I am not responsible' and blaming an entire nation of 1.4 Billion people for a virus. But don't expect the Trumpettes to see that. They need their false equivalence to keep from having to admit how incredibly inept he is. -
So you see trying to pass an important bill as the same as handling a crisis that will likely kill millions. And, as was noted above, at the time he said it it was probably true. There were enough changes in it by the time it finally passed that much of what was said about it at the beginning (by both sides) turned out to not be true (how many 'death panels' have been formed?). If the Idiot in Chief had said something to the effect of "it's serious, and we'll have to put measures in place to minimize the spread, but if we do that we can weather the situation" it would have put us ahead of the game. If he had asked the WHO for test kits immediately, if he hadn't had suspected infectees brought back on a plane with healthy people (and had them examined by health care workers who weren't properly briefed or given decent protective gear), if he hadn't said shit like "it will go away like a miracle", then maybe we could have put the brakes on it faster. Again, look at South Korea. Compare and contrast them with Iran, Spain & Italy. Those sorts of statements would not likely have caused much panic (some folks will panic at anything). But he didn't. He made placating, soothing, FALSE statements that were intended to keep the stock market from falling. They didn't work, because the truth came out, like it usually does. Reality has a way of doing that. Why did you think it was going to be the same as H1N1? If you weren't following the news, how could you draw any conclusion? If you had been following the story, you should have seen the numbers coming out of China and seen that this was far more serious than the 'normal' flu. Where were you getting your info from that made you come to that conclusion?

Are People Jumping Right Now?
wolfriverjoe replied to PlaneFun's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not entirely my idea, I've seen variations bouncing around on FB: Do you really want to jump? Do you want to risk getting hurt and needing to go into a hospital when all the ICU beds are full? Not just 'full of covid-19 cases' but 'full to the point that they can't take you in'? It's been a long winter and I was looking forward to getting up. But I don't see it happening any time soon. -
Because you make ridiculous statements. What else do you expect in response? While you are correct in the idea that they are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law, the facts are pretty clear. They were briefed on the reality of the coronavirus situation. In a classified briefing. They dumped a LOT of stock immediately after. The markets tanked because of the seriousness of the coronavirus situation. How would that not be insider trading? And, in a really ironic note, Burr was one of a few who voted against the STOCK act, which banned Congresscreatures from insider trading.

Shelter in place? That's for the little people.
wolfriverjoe replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
I drove through Chicago Wednesday evening. Hit the IL/WI line about 4:45, took I-94 thorough downtown. Virtually zero delays or backups. It took less time than it usually takes on a weekday late morning. I was crossing into IN before 6:30. It was really weird. -
You don't give a 'bat's ass' that the President is a racist asshole? That his base is also a bunch of racist assholes, who love this sort of shit? That he's using this as a distraction to hide how miserably he's managed this situation? That his race-baiting is likely at least partly at fault for the increase in attacks on Asians? Or, is it just 'Fuck them'?
-
That is fucking ridiculous. In 2012, the Swine flu came around. It was taken seriously from the beginning. Testing was done, travel restrictions were put in place, warnings were issued. While it was a different disease, with a different infection rate and a different mortality rate, it was handled reasonably well. Which is why the Alt-Right has spread so many lies about it. If the Mango Mussolini had taken this seriously from the beginning, it might not have gotten so bad so fast. But he didn't. He pretended it was a minor issue. He lied about the severity. He didn't even understand that the flu kills people. Or why a vaccine for one disease can't be used on another. He delayed bringing the people on the cruise ship ashore because it would increase the numbers and hurt his popularity. And now he's lying about the lies he told before. Saying that he knew it was a pandemic before everyone else. If you don't think 'a government can be prepared to protect you', look at South Korea (as was already noted). While they aren't totally unaffected, their total infections is not terribly high. Their mortality rate is around 1%. Italy, OTOH, was horribly unprepared. Caught totally off guard. They have over 31k confirmed cases and their mortality is nearly 8%. EIGHT PERCENT. Think about it.

Here is what I've heard is one of the more accurate summaries of cases: https://ncov2019.live/data If someone has a better one, or good info that this is not accurate, I welcome correction.

Highly unlikely. It seems to have started in a wild animal market in Wuhan. It likely came from a wild animal. Bats are suspected but no proof yet. One link (search 'Is coronavirus man made' to find a zillion more): https://www.centura.org/news/six-big-myths-about-coronavirus OTOH, Jerry Falwell Jr is advocating that ides. That, in and of itself makes me doubt it.

I don't see "Moderate" here (Wisconsin). Everything is open (Edit to change: No, everything isn't open. Schools are closed, the YMCA is closed, Green Bay shut down the bus system, the libraries are closed, some of the Nature Centers have closed their buildings but the trails are still open). Out on the West Coast, there are 'shelter in place' orders. That would be "Moderate". The difference in the number of deaths is the idea that with a slower spread (look at the peak dates), there would be far less load on the healthcare system. I'm hearing (unconfirmed) reports that it's bad enough in Italy that very old people are simply being put in a regular hospital room and left to die because they don't have enough ICU beds and specialized equipment for everyone. The local radio morning guys posted on FB something to the effect of: Look at what happened at the stores when everyone wanted a three year supply of TP all at the same time. Now think what the hospitals would look like if all those people got sick at the same time. THAT is why we need to take these steps to slow the spread. It sucks. I have a friend who just came back from Guatemala, on one of the last flights before the shutdown. She posted this: America, you're dropping the ball, big time! I just stood in nearly two hours of customs that looked just like those pictures of Ohare and DFW where thousands of people stand shoulder to shoulder and there is NO SCREENING WHATSOEVER for Covid-19. Nada. Just making us all stand there with a filthy floor holding all our bags. Guatemala on the other hand has been taking temperatures of every arriving passenger for over a week. They were constantly bleaching the floors, sanitizing surfaces, the airport was very clean. Miami is a fucking pit. Discarded masks, trash, neck pillows even on a dirty ass floor. I'm sorry, but there is no excuse for this. I took a photo but a customs agent immediately made me delete it because you're not allowed to take photos there. Word might get out about the b******* going on with our screening procedures. Those aren't REAL preppers. Those are 'wannabes'. Real preppers already had a year's supply of TP (along with food, water, guns, ammo, first aid supplies, soap, ect) on hand. Nope. Your ongoing fantasy of shooting the roaming gangs of thugs that will come out of Atlanta for you and your stuff is not likely to happen. Not with a 3%-4% mortality rate. We may have a mess, lots of people dying, hospitals overwhelmed, that sort of thing (look at Italy). But a real breakdown in society, no police to enforce order, dudes in shoulder pads & Mohawk haircuts riding around on beat up crotch rockets? Not gonna happen.
-
Do you really believe that? I won't deny that there are a few folks on here that I would not feel at all bad if something happened to them. But you aren't one of them. I disagree with you on both 'general principles' and specific issues on a variety of things (not everything). But in general, you are intellectually honest enough that I can at least mostly respect you. You claimed earlier that many on here wanted Trump to fail at handling this crisis. That's also not true, at least for me. I'd like to see him behave in a rational, adult, intelligent manner, using the best scientific information to help guide the nation through this. But, given the fact that he has NEVER acted in those ways, either before or during his time in office, I didn't have much hope. And, unfortunately, I was right. There was something posted recently (last couple of months?) that noted Evangelicals expected to be persecuted by those who disagreed with them. Mainly because they would persecute those who they disagreed with. Sort of "expect others to do unto you as you would do unto them".

The Governor of Oklahoma posted a tweet from a crowded restaurant. It is now deleted, but only after a lot of flack. Go figure that he's a Trumpette. https://www.palmerreport.com/analysis/governor-of-oklahoma-posts-idiotic-coronavirus-tweet-deletes-it/26387/
