Religious Authoritarianism Has America nailed to its Cross
wolfriverjoe replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, if it involves 'quacking', or 'quaction', then Bill would be the perfect guy for it, now wouldn't he? -
I agree that just about everything is 'waiverable'. Hollywood gets all sorts of waivers for the FARs to do movie stunt shoots. They've got the track record, connections*, skilled people and all that. The FAA allows them the waivers because they can show they aren't just a 'bunch of yahoos'. USPA does the same. Look at Luke's jump into the net. My understanding is that he got sort of a 'blanket waiver' to do a bunch of practice jumps where he pulled pretty low. Again, connections*, credibility, and a demonstration that he knew what he was doing. The thing about low exits from a balloon for training BASE is a bit different. If I read the thread correctly, they were going from a tethered balloon. I think the FAA treats tethered balloons differently. Because, among other things, they don't need a pilot, they aren't considered 'aircraft'. Again, this is from reading the thread. I don't have any personal or direct knowledge of this. * - Note: I'm using the word 'connections' to mean knowing what people to approach, and a working relationship with them from previous experience. It's not intended to mean special treatment.
-
Nope. Not from an aircraft. USPA doesn't care about people jumping from fixed objects. FAA doesn't either. It's when the jump is from an aircraft that they become interested. And I think that jumpers in places that have different rules would have to think about that. A BASE rig out of a plane is perfectly within it's design parameters to open well below BSR minimum pack opening altitudes.
-
I think the differentiator is that 'approved type rigs' are legal and 'other than approved type rigs' are not legal. Think about using a BASE rig for an emergency (pilot) rig in a jump or acrobatic plane. From a 'function' standpoint, they would both save your life if you had to get out. From a legality standpoint, the 'other than approved' part would be problematic. Part 105 covers 'other than approved type rigs', when they can be used and by whom for skydiving.

For a large part of the US, cheap gas is the only way to cheap transportation.

Wisconsin is seeing a significant drop in new positive cases. The total test numbers have gone down quite a bit too, so the 'percentage of positives' isn't dropping as much, but it's dropping some. Not sure if it's 'light at the end of the tunnel', or just a lull. Vaccinations are progressing slowly. A friend who's an RN was recently hired by a 'large national drug retail chain' to stab people. However, her start date has been pushed back a couple times. Originally it was going to be the 20th. Now it's the 2nd of Feb. She wasn't given a reason, but the shortage is probably a good guess.

91.307 says: The sticking point would be the 'available for emergency use' part. I highly doubt it would be illegal to transport an out of date emergency rig, even in the cabin (most light aircraft don't have a separate cargo hold). I would think that if it's in a box that is taped shut, with the handle zip tied to prevent accidental pulling, one could successfully argue that it wasn't 'available'. However, if it's in a warbird, where the parachute container is the seat cushion, then the 'availability' may become questionable. I read through the whole thread. Interesting and sometimes annoying discussion. This one is from before I started, and it's kinda cool to see some names that I haven't seen in a long time. Some, including the OP are no longer with us. There's no actual cite to verify that jumping a single, non-TSO'd rig is illegal. It's repeatedly stated, and simply accepted. Again, it's been cited somewhere, by someone. I just can't remember when, where or by whom.

Most of the 'base rig from an aircraft' stuff is done outside the US, where it's legal. The US isn't all that hostile to BASE. Bridge Day in WV, the Perrine Bridge in ID, much of the stuff out west, all of that is mostly legal. Structure jumping (bridges, buildings, antennas, power line towers, ect) are generally considered 'trespassing'. The owners are pretty strict about keeping everyone off them, due to the 'sue happy' legal culture in the US. Jumping in the National Parks in the US isn't ever going to happen again. Search out the "Flatbed Ten" for the story. That covers emergency rigs. Everything I can find in 105 covers what has to be legal to make a 'single harness dual parachute' jump. And a "parachutist" is defined as using one of those. But, again, I don't see a requirement to actually use one anywhere but as applied to foreign jumpers using equipment not certified in the US. Also again, this has been discussed before. More knowledgeable people than I have cited the spot in the regs that requires a two parachute system to legally jump from an aircraft (I think).
-
Interesting. I know this had been gone over before, and more knowledgeable people than me were able to cite it, but I looked at FAR 105, and the only place that I can see that requires using a single harness, dual parachute system is 105.49 (a)(2) - Foreign parachutists. There is a fair amount about the requirements to jump with a single harness, dual parachute system in 105.43, but I don't see anything that states using one is a requirment. In the definitions at the beginning, they define a 'parachutist' as someone who intends to jump from a plane with a single harness dual parachute system. That might be where the 'using one' is considered a requirement, but it doesn't specifically say so.
-
Actually, the jumper would be violating the regs too. While the 'typical' FAA enforcement involves suspending or revoking certificates, they can also issue fines. "Lawnchair Larry" (the guy who flew a bunch of weather balloons attached to a lawn chair through LAX airspace) didn't have any certificates to revoke, but he got hit with a 5 figure fine.

From what I understand, he's a much different person in real life. Some people undergo a personality change when they sit down in front of a monitor. It's partly the lack of accountabliltiy when you aren't dealing with 'real people'.

Well, it seems to be largely older white males. Look at pictures of Trump rallies. Look at the Capitol insurrection attempt. Look at the pictures of the guys who've been arrested for it. And I'm neither suprised nor amused. The idea that people want to shove their 'faith' and their 'loving God' down people's throats, at the point of a gun, is disgusting. Almost as disgusting as the 'stolen election' lie. I highly doubt that I'm going to do much. Posting on here is a way of venting. I don't think I'm going to reform any of the RWNs. There are still some posting crap about Biden and in support of Trump on FB. Besides, 30 years ago or so I was a 'right wing nut' (Is it 'rightwing nut' or 'right wingnut'). Pro-gun, pro 'small government' anti-ATF, all that (the shit the ATF pulled in the 80s & 90s was REALLY outrageous). These idiots are giving "Right Wing Nuts" a bad name.

Trump didn't cause it. He just capitalized on it. If you want to blame someone, blame Obama (not really). Once one of 'them' took up residence in the White House, all the racists lost their shit. They claimed he was a 'secret Muslim'. They claimed he was really Kenyan. They called him nigger in every way except actually using the word, and many of them did use the word. Just not where 'regular people' could see it. Trump capitalized on that big time. Remember when he claimed that a private detective had provided him with earth shattering proof about Obama? Of course, it was going to be made public in 'two weeks' and again of course, never was. Lots and lots of older white Christian males were completely marginalized when their hate, something they had held for decades, something they had needed to keep secret for a while, was brought out to the degree that Obama fueled it. As I noted above, Trump capitalized on it. He fed into the bigotry, xenophobia and hatred. He made it acceptable to hate again. His supporters lapped it up. He let those slimeballs think it was ok to crawl out from under their rocks. Why do you think Trump praised the Nazis? Or told the Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by"? Or attacked the BLM protests with anonymous federal agents? All of it was because he knew his base and what they wanted.

Funny how being conned for almost 3 years is a 'blessing'. Other folks don't share your positivity. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/paulmcleod/qanon-faithful-biden-inaguration?fbclid=IwAR0t03xtV7bmNgj_FsQ3n_BvdiMeWfPpyUFjIns1Fvk0n1AnDRmICEIftPU https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-55746304 From the Buzzfeed article (first link): Those folks see that they've been conned. Finally.

Given that they said they expected 20 million vaccinations to be done by the end of the year, yes. I would think they would have had some sort of plan in place. Unless they somehow though those injections would 'just happen, like a miracle'. They're going to release it in 2 weeks.

Does anyone else remember him claiming that the Ebola 'outbreak' in 2014 was the 'worst crisis we are facing?" I can't find that precise quote, but did find a rather interesting story. Look who was slamming the Obama administration for the response to Ebola. Look at what they were calling for to stop it. Compare and contrast that with those same people's response to Covid. https://www.salon.com/2015/05/13/the_ebola_buffoons_get_humiliated_the_politicians_and_pundits_who_were_the_wrongest_about_ebola/

Well, we've now found out what the "Trump Plan" for getting the vaccine out was. Nothing. Abso-Fucking-Lutely NOTHING. Link: https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2021/01/21/biden-covid-19-osterholm

All good points. Thanks. Although, I thought 'flappy-aroundy' was an aerodynamic term.

Very true (and well put). But Ron doesn't want to or need to 'get better'. He's going to keep hating liberals, fearing antifa and waiting for SHTF. He'll never admit that Q was a hoax, Trump was an incompetent buffoon, or any of it. Not to anyone else, not to himself.

Well, the concern that Amazon would host left wing sites, while shutting down right wing ones is legitimate. That would amount to discrimination. That would be illegal. However, the facts support the allegation that AWS shut down Parler because there was a LOT of incitment and advocacy of violence. Which is a legitimate reason to shut it down.

Yeah. Bernie's been showing up everywhere today.

Don't be so sure. If it can be shown that the insurrectionists were planning shenanigans, and it can be shown that those guys either were or should have been aware of those plans, and they facilitated tours of the Capitol the day before the insurrection attempt; then there's grounds for a conspiracy charge. Whether or not the prosecutors can get a conviction is a different story, but the idea of 'throwing everything at the wall' to see what they can get them to plead guilty to is a very strong possiblity.
