Instruction discussion split from 2021-01-08 Incident
wolfriverjoe replied to tbrown's topic in Safety and Training
SF Zombie already replied to some of this, but IMHO: Some of this stuff has to be learned personally. You can't learn it from a book, you can't learn it from a video, you can't learn it from a lecture. OTOH, some of this stuff is fairly advanced. You don't take a beginner and try to teach them to apex a curve at the limit of tire adhesion. You can teach them what skidding feels like, to take away the panic of it. To try to take away some of the incorrect instinctive stuff. Slamming on the brakes in a car, reaching for the ground when landing a canopy, that sort of stuff. -
How about a Harvard professor being arrested on his own porch? Look up Henry Louis Gates Jr.

The stories I've seen & read have made it clear that they took a good hard look at him at the scene. They made it clear that they determined that he didn't appear impaired. Nor was there any evidence of alcohol or drugs in the car. So they looked for that too. I'm guessing that the investigation is continuing and that they are making sure of what they have before issuing any charges. Tiger isn't poor. If they don't get this right, his lawyer will tear them to shreds. I think they know that and are being careful & thorough. We'll see what the next week or so brings.

Yes. It's a subtle but important distinction that the 'bad behavior' isn't being taught. It's the 'how to get out of trouble when you end up in it' and 'where the edge of trouble is' that is being taught. -
Georgia officials are suing Trump and the State GOP chair. They want the attorney's fees for the 'baseless and frivolous' lawsuits paid for. Only $17k, but it's only 2 counties. There are a lot more, and apparently some of them are considering similar suits. It would be kinda funny if every one of those stupid suits resulted in a similar claim. https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/24/politics/georgia-counties-trump-legal-fees/index.html

When I went through the training, there were two reactions: "We have to take the truck out there and do skids? Oh my god!" "We get to take the truck out there and do doughnuts? WOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!" (I was in the latter category). -

Keep in mind that there were potential felony real estate fraud charges against Ivanka & Don Jr that 'went away' after a large contribution to the Manhattan DA's campaign fund. https://www.mercurynews.com/2017/10/04/ivanka-trumps-little-secret-she-avoided-criminal-indictment-in-2012/ -

There's a huge difference between the idea of 'practicing mistakes' (or 'teaching mistakes') and intentionally putting people into situations they might end up in by mistake and teaching them how to get out of those situations safely. Stall recovery, either under canopy or in a fixed wing aircraft is a very good example. Spin recovery (used to be required to be a flight instructor, not sure if it still is) is another. Understanding how those situations can arise, but more importantly understanding how to get out of them is important. Another example I have personal experience with is skid/jack knife recovery in a semi truck. There's a huge difference between discussing how to get out of a skid or jack knife situation and actually doing it in a full sized truck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amiStk539Kw -
She's offering half a mil reward 'no questions asked'. Not all that bizarre. This was even a "Dragnet" episode way back when (not Lady Gaga and not involving armed robbery).

Apparently nursing home deaths have dropped quite a bit. The NYT "Morning Update" e-mail says they've gone down 60% from late December to early February. And it's primarily because the residents were among the first to get the vaccine. I said a while back that I was rather 'vaccine shy', and was perfectly happy to be towards the back of the line for it. That I would likely change my mind by the time my turn came. Still not my turn, but I'm now very willing to take the shot. No deaths from vaccine side effects that I've heard of. Serious side effects are rare and usually accompanied by underlying allergies. More importantly, while there are people who've been vaccinated getting sick, it's very few and virtually NONE of them have been hospitalized or died.

PD reserves have a limit of 40 packs or 25 actual uses. There's a section of the data panel to keep track with 'X' or '/' -

Oh yes. (or maybe 'oh no'). Prison is prison. No control over one's own self. Very little dignity. Lots of noise and commotion. Its not a pleasant place. That's one of the reasons I'd love to see Trump in one. I've been in visting rooms in a couple different places (Max & min), and I was always very happy to be able to walk out. My comment about Danbury was a play on Michael J Fox's quote from the movie "American President". I did a quick search for a video of the scene, but came up empty. -

Probably. They'll also be watching over him while he's in Danbury Federal Minimum Security Prison. -
LIfespan of rig and canapy with low jump numbers
wolfriverjoe replied to landmissle's topic in Gear and Rigging
Short answer: I wouldn't worry about it much. Get it properly inspected and you should be good to go. Longer answer: The nylon does degrade over time. But only a little bit. Less than the sun damage from jumping it. The military did some studies on gear that sat for a long time (decades) and found it to be perfectly servicable. Gowlerk covered the issue with the Vigil batteries. The one thing I'd be concerned about is the elastic. The keepers on the chest & leg straps and the mouth of the BOC pouch. The rubber in the elastic looses it's elasticity over time. But other than that, I'd personally have no issues packing or jumping it. -

Link doesn't work. -
It's wrong. To pretend that the entire military sees itself as "just green" because a small, elite segment of it does that is ignoring the reality that, as you noted above, the military is a microcosm of the entire country. My understanding and (limited) experience is that there's less racism in the military than out in the 'real world'. But 'less' doesn't mean 'none'.

Not on a whim. But they sure seem to take advantage of any opportunity to do it when they think they can get away with it. Not just cops either.

We argued this last month. You are required to have one more parachute that you plan to use. The regs are written poorly, but that's what they are supposed to say, and that's what the FAA will enforce... If you get caught. Intentional cutaways require a third parachute. Commonly called a 'tertiary' setup, commonly referred to as a 'tersh'. I can't remember which mfg it was that required a cut away to get a TI rating, but if a candidate didn't have one for real, they had to do one on a 'tersh' rig. UPT used to have one on the boogie circuit, used to demonstrate the skyhook. Beginners were NOT allowed to try it (C-license, IIRC). -
Johnny. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Right. But the power grid independence is a purely profit-driven issue. Yet former governor (and energy secretary) Rick Perry declared that Texas must remain free from any federal oversight or regulation of it's power supply. He also blamed wind power for the situation right now. Which is a blatant lie. https://cbsaustin.com/news/local/rick-perry-says-texans-would-rather-be-without-power-for-days-than-have-more-fed-oversight
