Miss Beverly Hills Thinks God Wants Gays Put to Death
jclalor replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
I'ts funny that every major news group reported on her full quote from the talmud, calling for the death of gays, yet Fox news only reported that she is against gay marriage, and she is just expressing her right to free sheech. I bet her hairdresser pissed http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2010/02/23/miss-beverly-hills-lauren-ashley-same-sex-marriage-carrie-prejean/?test=faces -

No punchline? Heres one: It seems that, when Moses came down from the mountain with the tablets containing the Ten Commandments, his followers asked him what they revealed about how they should live their lives. Moses told them, "I have some good news and some bad news." "Give us the good news first," they said. "Well, the good news," Moses responded, "is that he kept the number of commandments down to ten." "Okay, what's the bad news?" they inquired. "The bad news," Moses replied, "is that he kept the one about adultery in there." -

This is the kind of analysis a teenager would come up with, who thinks he's figured out everything. “It is an interesting and demonstrable fact, that all children are atheists and were religion not inculcated into their minds, they would remain so” Ernestine Rose -

That was a good one, keep em coming. Nothing more edifying than Christian proselytizing with a few racial slurs thrown in from time to time. -

"Of all the systems of morality, ancient or modern which have come under my observation, none appears to me so pure as that of Jesus.” - Thomas Jefferson “God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift from God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever.” - Thomas Jefferson "We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." -John Adams You are right, we can go round and round on the founding fathers. I guess our country should move more in the direction of Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. Nothing like a good theocracy, science bad, superstition good. -

Now there's a plan I like. You better get them while their young, we all know that once they get past the age of childhood without religion most are doomed to a life of logical reasoning. One thing that can not be done is to turn back the hands of time, the days of superstition are slowly coming to an end. "History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government." - Thomas Jefferson -

I think the point trying to be made is that when guns are on hand for noble reasons, more often than not, they are used in a moment of passion for the wrong reasons. -

I don't believe the claim was made that the majority of programs are faith based ( though not for lack of trying by the previous administration). The US teen pregnancy rate speaks for it's self. Odd, that's exactly the tie you made in your last post - you know, that part where you say "The result is soaring rates of unwanted pregnancy". Did you mean proof like this? http://www.newsweek.com/id/219818 According to your article, even at the beginnings of the 'abstinence surge' (in the 90's, btw), the US had the most teen pregnancies. The only reference that I can find for percentages was mention of roughly 1/3 of teens receiving abstinence based counseling in 1999. Neither datum appears to support your claims. Mabe you should have been a bit more honest in paraphrasing that paragraph; By 1999, one study estimated a third of American students were receiving an abstinence-only education. But as funding grew, so did a body of research showing that abstinence didn't change the sexual behaviors of students; pregnancy and STD rates did not go down, the age of initial sexual activity did not go UP. That look a little more familiar? or perhaps you should just ask Sarah. Show me data that says faith based programs work, but we both know the answer to that. -

I really take exception with this, I have a 19 YOF for a daughter who is wonderful, she is in college, volunteers at my hospital with abandoned sick and dying children, works part time, has never has been in trouble with the law, and never has been to church. On the other hand her best friend is very religious, And you know what? she is also very wonderful. Religion has NOTHING to do with character, I have no doubt that you are a very honest and decent person, but give your self the the credit. -

Just for fun look look at how many atheist are in prison, while about 2% of the general population consider themselves atheist, less than .03% of the prison population is comprised of atheist. -

Then expalin: Several weeks ago, a ground-breaking study on religious belief and social well-being was published in the Journal of Religion & Society. Comparing 18 prosperous democracies from the U.S. to New Zealand, author Gregory S Paul quietly demolished the myth that faith strengthens society. Drawing on a wide range of studies to cross-match faith – measured by belief in God and acceptance of evolution – with homicide and sexual behavior, Paul found that secular societies have lower rates of violence and teenage pregnancy than societies where many people profess belief in God. Top of the class, in both atheism and good behavior, come the Japanese. Over eighty percent accept evolution and fewer than ten percent are certain that God exists. Despite its size – over a hundred million people – Japan is one of the least crime-prone countries in the world. It also has the lowest rates of teenage pregnancy of any developed nation. (Teenage pregnancy has less tragic consequences than violence but it is usually unwanted, and it is frequently associated with deprivation among both mothers and children. In general, it is a Bad Thing.) Next in line are the Norwegians, British, Germans and Dutch. At least sixty percent accept evolution as a fact and fewer than one in three are convinced that there is a deity. There is little teenage pregnancy , although the Brits, with over 40 pregnancies per 1,000 girls a year, do twice as badly as the others. Homicide rates are also low -- around 1-2 victims per 100,000 people a year. At the other end of the scale comes America. Over 50 percent of Americans believe in God, and only 40 percent accept some form of evolution (many believe it had a helping hand from the Deity). The U.S. has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy and homicide rates are at least five times greater than in Europe and ten times higher than in Japan. All this information points to a strong correlation between faith and antisocial behavior -- a correlation so strong that there is good reason to suppose that religious belief does more harm than good. At first glance that is a preposterous suggestion, given that religions preach non-violence and sexual restraint. However, close inspection reveals a different story. Faith tends to weaken rather than strengthen people’s ability to participate in society. That makes it less likely they will respect social customs and laws. All believers learn that God holds them responsible for their actions. So far so good, but for many, belief absolves them of all other responsibilities. Consciously or subconsciously, those who are "born again" or "chosen" have diminished respect for others who do not share their sect or their faith. Convinced that only the Bible offers "truth", they lose their intellectual curiosity and their ability to reason. Their priority becomes not the world they live in but themselves. The more people prioritize themselves rather than those around them, the weaker society becomes and the greater the likelihood of antisocial behavior. Hence gun laws which encourage Americans to see each other not as fellow human beings who deserve protection, but as potential aggressors who deserve to die. And hence a health care system which looks after the wealthy rather than the ill. As for intimacy… Faith encourages ignorance rather than responsible behavior. In other countries, intimacy education includes contraception, reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancies. Such an approach recognizes that young people have the right to make their own choices and helps them make decisions that benefit society as a whole. In America faith-driven abstinence programs deny them that right -- "As a Christian I will only help you if you do what I say". The result is soaring rates of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Show me ANY study where non-beleivers are more law abiding than beleivers. -

The different criteria for the daignosis of mental illness has risen dramaticaly in recent years, probably about the same rate that you think society is crumbling. I woud submit that religion is a mental illness: A delusion is defined as a false personal belief based on incorrect inference about external reality and firmly sustained despite of what everyone else believes and despite what constitutes incontrovertible and obvious proof or evidence to the contrary -

\ Jesus did not say he was going to change the old laws (Matthew 5:17-19) but fulfill them. The only rules that are ever changed are the one that fit a particular religions needs. Some are just more extreme than others (Duggars). There is still plenty of nonsense in the NT just like the OT. The bread and butter of the christian right is still the OT, capital punishment, gay marriage, Prayer in schools, creationism and blah blah blah blah blah.

] If people are so in favor of bringing their children up with "Christian values" then why do they not give them the whole thing. I wonder how a six year old would react to hearing that god smashes babies heads against rocks (Psalms 137:9) or having bears maul 42 children for simply teasing a bald man (Kings2:27-9) Maybe the story of Lot offering up his virgin daughters to be raped by horny angels so they would leave some men alone that lot had as guest at his house. (Genesis 19:6) or better yet when the daughters get there father Lot drunk and then fuck him in able to get pregnant with their fathers sperm (Genesis 19:23-25 30-60) And lets not forget lot was a good and righteous man in the eyes of god. No need to even mention all the Egyptian children having their throats slashed by God. But we don't teach our kids any of this stuff, this mite spook them just a bit. It's better to start them off with A feel good Noah story or little baby Jesus in the manger with the cute little animals. So when we tell our young children how wonderful God is, lets give them the WHOLE bible, not just the warm and fuzzy stuff. sure there is a ton of good old fashioned sex and violence in the good book, so lets not deprive the little ones from learning why god smashes the heads of babies against rocks or offers little girls to be raped. I just love a good christian value filled bible story. The truth is, parents only teach the parts that won't freak out their kids. WWJD? How's that sit with ya?

Yes. Just like raising religion hatin' kids. My daughter is now 19 and I have never discussed religion with her at all, in fact I was very careful to avoid all conversations about it when she was around. Her mom is very religious and attends church a couple of times a week but never forces it on my daughter, who chooses not to attend. She is now old enough to make an INFORMED choice if she wants to be superstitious. It would also be hard for me to get her to beleive in Santa or the Easter bunny now that she has the abliity to reason.
