Yes, I know you believe the Gospels to be a big lie. I do not believe the Gospels were "A big lie" I do believe they were written at least 70 years after Jesus lived, that they were written by people who did not know Jesus. What was written, were oral traditions that were being passed from believer to believer. In the first few hundred years of Christianity, all of the first manuscripts of every book were different, reflecting the different views of the writers. often these views conflicted with one another, sometimes in very small ways, sometimes in huge ways, but they are all different. Perhaps one of the most famous quotes of Jesus " He who is without sin, cast the first stone" This story from John does not appear in any manuscript from the first 400 years. I have no doubt that the few that died, believed in what they were doing, they just made the mistake of pissing off the Romans and the Jews. there was no Roman law that made Christianity illegal. How were they to recognize him when they rejected parts of scripture describing what he came to do? Thats my point, God goes through all the work of the OT so that less than 1% of the Jews would recognize it when it comes? This does not make sense. Ya perhaps....Paul was awesome, an inspiration. I think the Psalms you quoted could have referred to any number of Jews who had suffered before Psalms was written, and there were many who suffered. The reference to casting lots for the clothing in Psalms was probably inserted by the writer of Mathew trying to give Credence to Jesus being the messiah I find it a bit strange, that a God would create a race of people, promise them all salvation and then send a messiah that 99% of them would not recognize. This would be like God sending David koresh as a Messiah and then expecting him to be recognized by Christians. Jesus was simply a first century apocalyptic Jew (There were many) who preached the end of the world would occur during the lifetime of those who were alive at the time. He was executed by the Romans for crimes against the state. If it were not for Paul busting his hump spreading the word outside of Judea, all would be forgotten.

Some day, some way, I hope and pray that you and others learn the difference between Old Testament Law and New Testament Grace. Question: Then why even care about the Old Testament? If the God of the Old Testament is made irrelevant because of the New Testament, then why cling to ANY of it? Where in the OT does it say that Jesus would come and be crucified and live again? The OT speaks of one who would overturn the present political system and restore Israel to all of it's glory. Jesus never did that. The early Christians tried and failed to establish that a few of the OT writings could explained Jesus, that's why the vast majority of Jews failed to believe he was the person what they were expecting. which was a great king or warrior who could restore Israel to what God had promised them. I haven't heard that one in a long time. Here's a challenge. If you drink regularly but do not consider yourself as having a problem, try going without alcohol for one year. My problem was never booze, it was mostly of the powered variety. I attended a popular 12 step program for a while, but could not get over step... what ever the one about the higher power was. I have been powder free for 20 years. I still drink, perhaps 2 or three times a year, mostly at the DZ I may have a couple of beers. Being a nurse and working nights and every weekend, I just don't have the chance to drink much.

He is considered as one of the leading scholars on the history of early Christianity and early Christian writings. I find this time period in Christianity fascinating and not for the reasons you suspect. I will never change your beliefs, as you you never change mine. When I post here, I am trying to suggest to people who may be on the fence about religion, to look for themselves about all the different points of view on the matter. You may very well think you "own me" when it comes to our arguments, thats great, think what you will. Nothing I say will ever be taking seriously by you when you have the old " The bible says it, I believe it and that settles it' attitude. It gets a little boring trying to match you with book, chapter and verse, you can find several that say no one knows when Christ will appear again and I can find several that say he will appear again during the lifetimes of some of his contemporary followers. That is my main point; the bible is filled with contradictions. You say it's not, I say it is. Viva la difference.
