  1. We all know how your ethics are perceived. Tell me how the reality is different from the perception. I'm not asking you to justify anything. I'm asking you to take the time to help me understand what you're saying. My experience is that people will say all kinds of things, and those things are often quite meaningless in reality. The only way to make a judgment about anything a person does is to look at the action. Not the intention. Not the stated intention. And not the result. (Because all three may be totally different.) rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. "Ethics" isn't what you say. It's what you do. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  3. You don't know just how true this is. It's still not the same as posting. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. Nah, he's just being a drama queen. To be a drama queen, you have to make an announcement and leave in a huff. He just went quietly...and scared me to death. He was there and then he was gone. I miss him--he's one of the smartest, most caring guys I've ever come across, and whatever his weird qualities, they are far overshadowed by the quality of his mind and his bottomless empathy. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 5. Oh, maybe he was waxing it... I was trying to erase that part of the message from my memory. No. He was mowing. He usually gets himself waxed, but the regrowth was driving him crazy, so he got out the old electric shaver and did a quick buzz job. When I talked to him, he was still nekkid. God, I miss him. I think we need a memorial thread. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. It's remarkable what a name change can do to increase one's cachet, veter. Like everyone else, I'm glad you're okay. Unlike them--because I know who you are--I'm wondering why you continue to make jumps beyond your skill set. Perhaps we need a base version of bounce bingo. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  7. Whoops! Sorry. I took out the last line, but I didn't delete the emoticon. Bad Rhonda, bad bad Rhonda. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  8. It does work. The other name for this is "casting one's bread upon the waters." No one ever knows when they'll be the victim of a random act of senseless kindness, but for me, it always happens when I need it most. There's only one way to continue that cycle. Discern a need, and if it strikes a chord within you, assuage it. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  9. Is it spousal support or child support? If it's child support, no. If it's spousal support, it depends on why it was awarded. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  10. Fixed the first three, but all the rest are right on. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  11. None of the above. I think that it should be an honorable profession in all its many forms, but I have no interest in paying for it or being paid for it. So I don't date if I can help it, and given the quid pro quo aspect of dating as set forth in some of these posts, I prefer to pay for dinner (or whatever the "date activity" happens to be). I also prefer sex to happen in the context of friendship, and if the relationship deepens, then it's all to the good. If two people can strike a balance this way, then neither one of them is "paying" for sex. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  12. That would be my bet. It certainly looks like they were making the effort. And it would serve him right if he lived. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. I drink rarely (and never when I'm unhappy) so when I'm sad, I either post or lose myself in fiction. But I think for most people, calling a friend or going out and seeing friends is probably a better solution. Sex also works. Some of the hormones produced during sexual activity are mood elevators, and for women, there's an added bonus, because women exposed to semen have a lower rate of depression than those who are not. But that comes with its own set of perils that may lead to greater sadness. I hope you feel better soon. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. Upon further reflection, I like the attitude this bespeaks. You're right. The term "date rape" diminishes the emotive content elicted by the word "rape" used alone. It somehow minimizes the fact that rape is just as devastating (and possibly more so) if it is committed upon one by a "friend" or acquaintance. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 16. Take your pick. Do you want them in formaldehyde, mummified, or flash frozen? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  17. There is now a composting process. I've posted this link before, but this is where I learned about it. The book is called Stiffs: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, but it should probably be called 101 Things to Do With a Dead Body. 20. No?!? see this post... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2014883;#2014883 He thought your sig is a part of your post, and he assumed it had something to do with him. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  21. *** Reference to a 'Gay' porno?!? rotflmao! Poor bill. For as long as he lives, there will be those who remember how he tried to pretend that it was his fanny pack. But we all know what it really was. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  22. One more misunderstanding to clear up. "Date rape" doesn't mean "given a date rape drug." There are a lot of women who are assaulted by men with whom they have relationships that the women do not intend to be sexual. And that's why it's called "date rape." The so-called "date rape drugs" are derived from that, not the other way around. And I guess I should be using the word "people" because 10% of rape victims are men. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  24. My closest friend in the world took his own life in June 2004. He was only in his early 50s, but he had incapacitating health problems that were not going to improve. For quite a few years before that it was one of the recurrent themes of the many philosophical discussions we had (about a year before he died, in particular, there was one three month period when we spent five and more hours a day on the phone every single day, and it came up quite a bit). My only issue with suicide is not making a mess for someone else to clean up or creating a situation where hapless bystander will be scarred for life. I don't think I would ask a friend to help me off myself. If it came down to that, I guess I'd just play the hand I was dealt, because I don't think you offer that kind of moral quandary to anyone. My daughter used to say (when she was in her early teens), "Don't worry, Mom, I'll just shoot ya." She now understands that it wouldn't be a good idea, although at the time, it was a loving gesture (given the context of the discussions in which it came up). But asking someone to pull the plug (act in accordance with the standard precepts of a living will) is a different matter. So if I can't do it myself in a non-scarring, non-messy way, everyone knows I want an immediate DNR. But as I said, barring the unforeseen catastrophe, after which I will not be able to act for myself, I have little doubt of my ability to do the job. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 25. It's better than it was 30 years ago, but you have to understand something. I would rather be beaten within an inch of my life than be raped, and I'm guessing that most women probably feel something close to the same. Forced sex. There's nothing like it. And to ask a woman to get her head together afterward...well, it's asking too much. Someone who is in the mental and emotional fetal position is not capable of accepting support. Especially if they've first had to deal with the tender mercies of the patrolmen with bad attitudes who answered the 911 call. http://www.rainn.org/statistics/ 58% of rapes go unreported. There are good reasons for this. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
