  1. My father's mother turned either 99 or 100 on her last birthday (December 22, I think). She is still living in her own home, has no physical problems, and she gets around just fine, including up and down the stairs, and across the street to bug my mother...all day long. Her mind is toast. Gone. Sometimes she's 16, sometimes she 50, but everything that has happened since she was about 87 years old does not exist for her. Even so, the last time I saw her (2003), she seemed happy enough. As long as I'm physically healthy and mentally "there," I don't mind getting older. If I begin to lose the ability to do the things that are meaningful to me, however, I'm out of here. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  6. i think shes tried but her legs arent strong enough to keep me under once i run out of air....... Oh Vinny, you keep forgetting that I'm likely coming home. Between the two of us (and all the other volunteers I expect to flock to my banner), you're going under. Hugs and kisses, rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 7. I got it! I got it! You didn't stop being a bitch!! Nope. That's not it. (Well, that may be true, depending on who you ask, but it's not the answer here.) No prize for you. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  8. No, buthow did you like my clever, elaborate ruse to get you to admit that that's what you had been being? Get back to me when you figure out what really happened. Par for the course?
  9. It isn't women. It's people. This sort of thing happens a lot, and it's not just about domestic violence, and it's not just about women. Massachusetts has gone way overboard on the abuse bandwagon. It's on the "cutting edge" as to theory, treatment and punishment. Unfortunately, some of what it's doing is wrong--because the theorists are wrong--including the extremes to which it goes. But the pendulum always swings before it settles--humans are nothing if not creatures of reactionary behavior. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 11. It's PJ's basic nature to go off on tangents. He has an undisciplined (young) mind. Many original thoughts floating around in there, but they must be lassoed and wrestled into submission. And he has a bit of a temper. He hasn't yet learned that the adrenaline of anger transiently lowers one's IQ by a point or 30. God only knows what he's going to say about this. I'm sure I'm dead. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  13. It is based on the assumption that ... Please stand by. I can handle explaining what assumptions I was making. Why would you answer to the accusation that was made against me with such a strident assertion that you know what I meant? I wouldn't presume to respond for you. My response was a more general kind of assumption--a legal assumption, actually--not your personal assumption. A hijack of sorts, since this is not a discussion between only two people, but anyone who happens to wander along. I mostly don't agree with the rest of your post, btw. I stand by what I said, but I don't really want to turn this thread into a discussion of domestic violence and the various flavors of abuse--subjects with which I have all too much education and familiarity. I will tell you one story though. When I was about 10 years old, I asked my mother about the time my father turned the kitchen table over during dinner. I described what I remembered, and the look of shock on her face remains with me until this day. I was 9 months old and in my highchair at the time of that particular display of temper. I don't believe that children can remember prior to the time they have language, but I was both walking and talking by then. Most of my sharpest childhood memories include some scene of (relatively mild) violence, and in my early adulthood, I repeated certain things my mother did, only to realize later that it was an exact emulation of her behavior. As adults, we repeat the patterns of our childhood until we gain mastery over them. Some people never get help, and they repeat their parents' problems over and over from one relationship to the next. And even when people think they have it licked, it sometimes crops up in the strangest situations. What children see, they will do. Over and over again. If two adults want to drive each other crazy, and if they make misery of their life together, well, more power to them. But when children are involved, someone needs to step in and stop the cycle, because it will repeat itself. If you can't exhibit grown-up behavior, you're not entitled to grown-up privileges. IMO, of course. Edited to add: The reason their discretion was taken away is because the fuckers never did anything. Even today, some of them will do as little as they can get away with. Just this once, take my word for it, as to what used to happen and what still happens sometimes today. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. A subtle shift in syntax has occurred, here. Somehow you're now calling it the "age of consent" but I have always known it as the "age of majority" or the "age of adulthood." This has already been answered as to the meaning of "age of consent" so I'm not going to answer it again except to say the following: There is no subtle shift of syntax. John knew what bill meant by consensual sex--that we were not talking about statutory rape or pedophila--and he hijacked the meaning of the discussion. Further, the "age of consent" is not always 18. Actually, she can't. Not legally. Her parents have to consent for her, although they can't sign away her legal rights. It's a little more fluid in practice, but children cannot consent. They're legal incompetents. Okay, now you're off onto something else, so it's time for another thread or another poll or whatever. The line has to be drawn somewhere as to when a child is no longer a child. We do this to protect children. It's true that some "children" are more mature at 16 than others are at 18 or even later, but we still need a guideline. In practice, it doesn't happen all that often that 18 year old men are prosecuted for statutory rape. It only happens under certain circumstances, some deserved, others not. It may not always be fair, but sometimes it is, and we still have to have a line somewhere. Okay, what's your solution? Please don't solve it here. As I said, another thread, because this is completely off-topic for this one, and I can't handle another twofer thing this week. Seriously, didn't you enjoy it more when I was being a bitch? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  18. From a moderator's point of view, would this be a bannable offense or get the thread locked or deleted? It probably would be in bad taste at the very least... How can a moderator ban you for something that you do elsewhere? What if I actually did it, THEN posted the transcript here? Wouldn't the case need to be made that the transcript violates the forum rules? I think Chuck's point is that it is kinda childish and narcissistic and just generally not very nice to do to an innocent bystander. But I wouldn't want to put words in his mouth. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  23. I see how you are. Fine. Leave me out, then. What he really wants is a harem. What he forgets is that he has to be very careful not to offend any of his concubines. I'm afraid he's going to be very tired and not quite able to keep up. On the other hand, with you around, we can always hold the threat of a firing squad over his head. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  24. Do you think that if it were John and me, I would consent? Bait and switch (a/k/a equivocation) is one of the lowest forms of argument. People who do it are not on my list for anything but avoidance. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  25. Do I protest when I'm bashed? That's very naughty of me. Please provide me with some recent examples so I know what you're talking about. I didn't say that you protest about yourself being bashed. I don't see anyone bashing you, including myself - we're being polite. I said that you protest "from others", i.e. on behalf of other people. John, I can't keep up when people redefine the English language to mean what they say it means, not what English-speaking people understand it to mean. "from others" does not mean "on behalf of other people." It means what it means. You miswrote...whatever, but it is what you wrote, and now you're changing the meaning. No one can argue like that. And it's a bad reflection on you, not on those who don't understand you, because no one but you interpreted it the way you're now casting it. Good grief. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
