  1. Usually I tip the standard amount, because the server puts the order together and because it takes up time just like everything else s/he does. Sometimes--however--if I get in the direct path of an attitude, I don't. I once had one of the servers at the local bar allow my burger to sit and get cold (she told me she would be with me in a minute, and then she kept counting her tip money), so I didn't tip her (I saved a buck, but my burger was still unpleasant). Other than that, I tip. Edited to add: If you order take-out regularly, the servers will remember you, and you'll do a lot better as a tipper than not. Especially at your local ethnic restaurant where it's usually a family affair. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. It can be irritating unless you really like to write. I have days when I write lengthy posts and realize that somehow I have managed to make a completely incomprehensible argument. Sometimes I delete and start over, but sometimes I just give it up and go make a cup of tea. Other days, I don't notice I'm making an ass of myself, and I post crap. I do actually try to learn something here, and sometimes I do, if only that there are certain people I never want to meet, no matter how long I live. Other times, I find that people will make interesting points I've never thought of, and that makes it pretty worthwhile. Trying to keep up makes me tired, though. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  3. Never. It's all about the argument itself. For me it is primarily entertainment. I know I'm not going to change anyone's opinion, so the point is just to make the best argument I can. I do get a bit annoyed with myself, though, when I miss the point or have trouble writing a coherent reply. Edited to add: What Rebecca said. I can't stand arguments that are about the psychology of the poster. Although...I did make an exception to that when it came to artistcalledian. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  5. I believe I wish to retract my original opinion. http://www.masslaw.com/break021506.cfm Excerpt: Korman apparently thought Abdala had a bright future ahead of her so he offered her a job in their first meeting. They agreed upon a start date. But Korman then called Abdala to his office to tell her that he had decided to hire two lawyers, not one. As such, he had crunched some numbers and decided he had to reduce the amount of salary they had discussed. Still, he said, he was excited about her working for him. Korman set up computer resources for his new hire and made the other usual arrangements. But Abdala did indicate to Korman that she may have to give the job some more thought. It's an interesting article, but I'm just not so certain that I agree with the conclusion, or with my own conclusion here, given the additional facts. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 6. That this was very funny: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2068282#2068282 And, of course, we agree that Peter needs a spanking. Many, many spankings.
  7. No way! Aw, c'mon, Chris...I'm mean...sometimes we agree, right? Well...uh...once, anyway. This is just one that I've argued so fiercely, I don't feel like doing it again, at least not so soon. And it's kind of off the real track of this debate anyway. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  9. We disagree. I've already had this argument twice here in SC, and it's not worth having again. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  11. How so? What's emotive about it? What I'm seeing from you lately (like now, and I don't get it) is a lot of analysis of the discussion but I don't actually see you venturing an opinion of your own or even backing up your analysis with any facts. I don't know what it's all about, because as I said, it's new, but I'd still like to see you backing up your arguments as you always have in the past. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 12. totally disagree - you'd rather just go on and pretend that those who disagree with you are hopeless and evil. Where do you come up with this stuff? Eh? I would not be likely to abort a child of my own except under very compelling circumstances. As for what others do...well, there was a time, pre-abortion, that babies were left to die by exposure, oft-times only because they had the misfortune to be female. Invent the uterine replicator, and I will still advocate for not bringing a severely mentally or physically challenged child into the world, but without giving it a whole lot of thought, that's where I'd draw the line. I might come up with other instances, but that's my initial thought. It's remarkable to me that biology continues to be a thought experiment to some people. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. This is Speaker's Corner. No one listens, no one cares, no one actually gives any thought to their opponent's argument. In most contexts, I would agree with you, but there is no real dialogue here. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. She's 21, plenty old enough for anyone under 35. The old guys will be judged on a case-by-case basis (if I want them, she can't have them). rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  15. Actually... ...you look a little old for her. Also...a little...uh...strange. And weren't you once a dog? With that said, however, she is apparently conducting her own negotiations now, so I urge you to contact her directly with your bid. Be warned that she's not cheap either. Edited to add: Oh wait. I get it. You want me to pay you to take her? The going rate was always $50, but I never could get anyone to haul her away. I wonder why. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  16. When do you think it is a life worth protecting as any other? If what a woman carries inside her body isn't capable of living outside her body, I'd say that no matter what you believe, you haven't the right to demand that she use her body as an incubator just to suit your idea of what is right and wrong. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 17. Thats like saying, "I wouldn't tie a black man to a tree and participate in a firing squad that killed him, but I would want the choice to do so." This is a terrible, non-working analogy but the answer is still: She does have that choice, and she chooses not to. If abortion is illegal, women still have a choice: back alley or baby. It's a question of the range of easily available choices, and the outcome you're aiming to achieve. If you want women dying needlessly, please feel free to ban abortions. If you want defective children being born, please feel free to ban abortions. If you want a child born into a life that is hell on earth, please feel free to ban abortions. And so on. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  19. By definition, he was a mean, domineering jerk. The fact that he intentionally kept her isolated is one of the biggest of all the flags of abuse. It doesn't matter that she seemed to go along with it--what choice did she have? She was his prisoner. I'm going to shut up now, because if I don't, I'll be taking a perfectly good thread to SC. But this is outrageous, and to characterize this guy and the relationship as anything less than abusive is insane. Edited to add: The stereotype derives from something akin to Stockholm Syndrome. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  21. "Pregnant" also happens to women who are meticulous about using birth control. Sometimes, shit happens. A woman who has chosen to have an abortion--for whatever reason--has enough to deal with without the Monday morning quarterbacking of those who don't understand that they don't get to choose for anyone else. An earlier exchange between Shannon and sundevil777 went like this (with elisions): The reason I cut out the stuff in the middle was that I think those two positions are not compatible. I totally disagree that the two positions are incompatible. It may be that we can decide "when life begins" but the choice to end a pregancy still lies with the person whose body carries the fetus. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 22. Actually, the line is "like mold." It's what Ray Losli used on me in the Base Zone when we were first becoming...uh...friends. In the end, the stupid fucker turned out to be one of my favorite base jumpers, and he doesn't post nearly enough. I don't know if Chris will reach his stature, but one never knows what mold will do, does one? rl P.S. Every time I post about Ray, I send him a PM with the link. It just horrifies him to find himself in the Bonfire, so I wonder what he'll do when he finds himself in SC. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  23. I'm perfectly willing to share him (well, I was stalking him first, so that must confer some property rights), but please try to give him back in good condition with only normal wear and tear. Deal? 24. I've known quite a few Filipino women in connection with working for various law firms. My experience is that one does not fuck with them lightly, because although the sounds emanating from their general vicinity are musical and although they can be quite warm and friendly... ...they are quite astute and they take no shit.
