Wasn't she going to bed? Mom, that is. I'm trying. Really. The problem is that I can no longer keep up. I deleted half a day's post reply and PM notifications about an hour ago. There were 70, one third of which were replies to my posts and the rest of which were PMs. For the whole day today, I think the total number was somewhere between 100 and 120, but I can no longer think coherently enough to add. And then there's Yahoo and MSN. I post rather thoughtlessly, because it's somewhat impersonal, but I try to be a little more careful with the PMs, so most of them take longer. In the last two months, I have initiated or replied to about 3500, and I still owe a couple hundred more. Obviously, I have a big mouth. Even more obviously, I love the time I spend online. But sometimes, I just fall behind because I do occasionally have to do normal people things, and then I spend some of my sleep time trying to get caught up again. Now I'm really going to bed. Good night. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

How do you feel about pregnant women smoking?
RhondaLea replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
Well... I hear you.. We have an entire prison system full of people that feel just like you do. Those people in the prison system aren't there because they're breaking "Rhino's Personal Rules of Behavior." They're there because they forgot that their right to swing stops at the end of the next guy's nose. Very often, people go to prison for precisely the reason that they thought they should be able to control another person, and so failed to exercise self-control. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. How do you feel about pregnant women smoking?

Excuses.. Lots of them coming from you. Anything can be quit with a decision. I've known pack a day smokers to just STOP. And never again have an urge to smoke. Simply because they stopped rationalizing and made a decision. It's not an excuse, it's a statement of fact. I've never said it was okay for me to smoke when I was pregnant. I know a lot of people who can take cigarettes or leave them. I also know a lot of people who can do the same with drugs and alcohol. That doesn't change the fact that for some people, all these things address a biochemical issue that needs to be resolved. That's not a judgment, it's just a fact. It is also a fact that quite a few very good mothers smoke cigarettes, whether you believe they should be allowed to be mothers or not. I'm not disputing the dangers of smoking while pregnant; I'm disputing that you have the right to decide how other people should live. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. How do you feel about pregnant women smoking?
RhondaLea replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
Nicotine is physically addictive, Dave. So it's not quite a choice. I've mentioned before that I tried to quit several times while I was pregnant. I failed. But there were other things going on in my life at that time that were a lot worse for Beck than smoking a cigarette. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Do You Have Different Rules for Online Behavior?
RhondaLea replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
Well...I'm prepared to talk about all the same things in person. And I'm prepared to do the things I talk about with some obvious limitations. Well, obvious to me, anyway. But I think that all online discussions have an element of performance art...because, for example, if GTA is walking around at work in a tin foil hat, I'm really worried about him. About the only thing I wouldn't talk about online that I would talk about privately is current relationships, especially if they're not working. It's one thing to have banter in public between partners, but quite another to drag the dirty linen out for all to see. And although I might talk about past relationships in certain contexts, I would not be naming names. The rest of my life, however, is pretty much an open book. It's a lot easier not to have secrets. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

It has nothing to do with attitude and everything to do with addiction. Satisfaction is not the word I'd use, and I wouldn't chalk it up to choice. As far as cigarettes are concerned, nicotine is more addictive than heroin. But there are lots of potentially unhealthy things women can do while they're pregnant, as well as unhealthy things men do to them while they're pregnant. In the end, most women do the best they can with what they have to work with. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

Anyone who refers to a baby this way shouldn't be a mother. Well, too bad. Because I am a mother, and I became a mother against some pretty overwhelming odds. So, you can make all the judgments that you like, but my own experience is that those who feel the need to control everyone else do so because they have no self-control. Further, I can tell you from my own experience, such people make singularly lousy parents. My kid is okay, in spite of the fact that in your judgment, I shouldn't be a mother. I'm satisfied with the outcome. I hope that in 20 years, you'll be able to say the same. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

How do you feel about pregnant women smoking?

It works as long as you're "Pro-choice",doesn't it? No. Not really. For me, there are two issues: the first is that when a woman becomes pregnant, she has a personal responsibility to the child she carries, if she chooses to carry the child at all. The second is that no one has the right to decide for another how they should live. Each of us has quite enough to do managing our own lives without micromanaging the life of another person. Those two ideas keep getting tangled up in this thread when certain people make controlling statements about what they will and will not allow others to do. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from.
