  1. Are there any good freefly instructional videos out there? Brian Germain has one but that's the only one I know of. W
  2. Not at all. I teach probably more CRW than anyone out there to newbies and I teach lots of folks at way lighter wing-loadings. Especially on 2 and 3-ways, wing-loading isn't very critical.. I work a lot with Spectres and Triathalons as well and those canopies you can easily work with at lighter wing-loadings...
  3. I agree too. For years I believed the notion that girls should wear vests, but when I switched to a belt, I noticed I could halve the weight that I was wearing in a vest.. It was noticably easier to fall fast with a belt than a vest...
  4. Actually death straps are no big deal if you have properly designed ones. I mainly refer to them as that to scare the freefallers! I don't do leg locks either normally. I find the easiest way is to have the other guy climb down my lines, I throw my legs up between his, he holds on, and I do a 180 degree toggle turn. Voila - a downplane... w
  5. I don't know about that - I've had Lightning 113's with 8 foot lines and 9 foot lines - and it was a HUGE difference.. The 9 foot lines were tremendously floaty compared to the 8. Landed a lot better too... W
  6. I've got Tim Webb from Jumpshack stopping by Skydive Temple on July 10/11 to teach me all about Racer packing. Any other local riggers who are interested in getting some training contact me and I'll get your more info. This is all free of charge (though I suspect he'll take bribes of alcohol/beer!) W
  7. Sounds like a grand time!!! You definitely gotta watch out for the after-jump activities however - they can make CRW look safe! W
  8. For everyday CRW that shouldn't be a problem at all. The only time we really pay strict to wing-loadings are at world record camps and such where wing-loading is much more critical... For people jumping with teams, most teams load their canopies higher than the big-way/casual CRW jumper... All that matters so much there is that you match your team! W
  9. For big way stuff, Lightnings at 1.3-1.375 wingloading (which includes gear) is the gold standard.... For small stuff Triathalons and Spectres mix well with Lightnings, but Prodigies sink out of the sky too much to mix well.. W
  10. Part of it too was the pilot tho - Cheryl's formations were nowhere near as sinky as Dave's. Every dock I did on Dave's formations had me docking on front risers. Even on the biplane-diamond when I docked the 2-stack (and 2-stacks sink more than a single canopy) I docked on full front risers to stay with it. Most bigger formations don't sink that much tho.. A Tri 150 would defintely help yah...
  11. I'm 35 and could hear it fine. Course I always wear earplugs in the airplane!
  12. Not sure about October, but when I was at the Tokyo Skydiving Club last year, they had a ton of sleeping bags and everyone just crashed on the floor of the main building. I had a spectacular time there partying with them even though I didn't speak Japanese... :-) Great people.. You would want to get help from a Japanese friend if going there. I had to buy a membership to their association and insurance or something like that, and you have to do that ahead of time, and they don't do credit cards - I paid a Japanese friend and they transferred the money to the dz bank account. It was somewhat strange. Jumps were definitely expensive but so is everything in Japan..
  13. CRWdogs are definitely willing to take newbies. Go talk to the folks in Titusville next time ya see em - trust me - they're not that scary :-)
  14. Yeah. I stopped counting when the body count reached 30. I don't think I really want to know how many it is these days.. The sport is still worth it though. I have too much family here to quit..
  15. Nope. He definitely should have been on front riser. Anytime your nose gets in front of the other person, trying to abort on brakes will make your canopy float before it dives away. The effect would have been the same whether he hit brakes or rear risers. Front risers would keep him from floating up and taking me out :-)
  16. I'm just horrifed of her loss. I loved her to death. She was my fellow wingman - her and I were the first 2 people on the planet to ever hang row 10 wings on a CRW formation. It makes me feel really alone now...
  17. What's really funny is that wraps used to bug me. :-) Last fall, I started producing a wrap video, and as I waded through hundreds of hours of videos, and literally probably spent 200 hours editing wrap videos, I lost all fear of wraps. At the world record, I was calmer than I've ever been on big-ways. Walt wrapped me, but I was laughing even as it happened. After watching so many videos of WAY more interesting wraps, ours was easy :-) And oh yeah - Mark and I really like to drink Shiner Bock so we LOVE when you come to jump there :-)
  18. Congratulations Mike! The young one grows up :-) W
  19. I've heard tales that long ago in Texas they did the same thing. They had to drive quite a ways to get on the train, but there was a huge bridge that it crossed partway through its journey and they'd hop off there! W
  20. What? You've never started drinking and felt the urge to call up buddies? That's drunk-dialing. These days I prefer drunk text-messaging - that way I can do it to friends on other continents cheap!
  21. Martin text-messaged me last night that they did some good jumps, including double diamonds onto the beach. I hear rumors that Cheryl got drunk-dialed by Marcie, so there was definitely a party happening! :-) W
  22. Ya know - come to think of it - I definitely think you're right! The English do always seem to be involved in the excitement :-) W
  23. 118 more jumps? Standard rule at my dz is 25 jumps and their own gear.. When you do it with someone experienced like me, its very safe - much more so than many people think. There is absolutely no better way to improve your canopy control. That's why everyone at Salado does CRW with me starting young.. W
  24. When you're ready to jump, we can get your rig back together in no time flat.. I can't give you any advice on the back injury - how you feel yourself and what the doctor says are what matters - but once you are physically healthy you'll be able to jump your own rig.. W
  25. Come do CRW with me. There's a reason nobody at Salado gets away without doing CRW - you can learn more about canopy flight in 1 jump than you can in a ton more freefall jumps.. Flying relative to another person in the air will really help you gain perspective on canopy flights..
