It's endless. It's like The Blob from the 1950's movie with Steve McQueen. The more it eats, the more it grows. There is no stopping it. In order to perpetuate this ridiculous juggernaut, which mostly only creates criminals anyway...you need more and more bodies to justify its existence. Which is a good reason to build another prison and cut back on the juvenile programs. Works very well to help the system grow. Washington State is a very good example of how this works. Back in the late 1970's they closed most of the youth camps for juvenile offenders, which were staffed mostly by college-educated counselors who had pretty good success straightening kids out. Instead, they just started sticking kids in juvenile detention centers and sentencing them to X number of months for X crime, and then tossing them back out. Ten years later or so...Washington had to start building more prisons. Then they converted most of the old youth camps to adult facilities as well. When Jay Inslee was running for governor, I got a minute to speak with him about this. I handed his assistant a three-page plan on how to re-vamp the whole damn thing very easily, and why the results would be nothing but positive. He's standing there nodding. Probably not listening. He barely glanced at it and then handed it off to his assistant. It probably ended up in File 13. The real problem, the underlying problem, is that we brought all of this on ourselves by forgetting the kids. Hell, the System has even expanded to television shows like Lockup or Extended Stay Lockup or whatever. If they actually FIXED the system, many prisons would lie empty due to lack of participants and millions would be laid off their correctional jobs. If true then this is a matter for Quade. I know others have had concerns about the same thing in the past. As 'interesting' as Petey is, for a number of reasons, I just don't see him as a fit in the Cooper profile. And apparently the FBI didn't either, on genetic grounds alone. I don't think the FBI would have hesitated to take Pete into custody if they (and the US Atty Gen's office) thought he was the guy. Pete's cooperation seems to reinforce the notion that when push came to shove he took this seriously, and as far as he is concerned its over with and he doesn't intend to revisit it, with anyone. It was not Curly and it was not straight - wavy, but he had hard time finding the words. I know why he had a hard time finding the words. Look at Duane's prison shot from Jefferson and put something besides a poor man's hair cut on him and a lot of product in the hair to smooth out the curls. Depending on the weather in 1971 few products could or would keep the curl or waves down for any respectful period of time. The hair started to get fuller as Cooper's time on the plane was extended. Are these witnesses that say he quit wearing the toupee after the hijacking, the same witnesses who remember that he skipped out on Thanksgiving dinner the weekend of the hijacking? Also, Ckret shot down the idea of Cooper wearing a toupee earlier in the forum. He basically said that no one mentioned that they thought he was wearing one. Much like I have a hard time with someone having colored contacts in 1971, I also have a hard time believing that Cooper could have worn toupee in 1971 and it went completely unnoticed, except by Mr. Mitchell, who was only a casual observer and had no reason whatsoever to remember anything about Cooper.
