Jim and I got off the C-206 at about 12k together, He on his new V-1 and me on my S-3 (which I admittedly don't fly well yet). Jim instantly accelerated up and away from me, within 30 seconds he was just a dot. It looked like he was jet propelled. I mean seriously smokin. Holy shit Fishman!! I'm guessing his forward speed at 120-140 mph. On his initial V-1 jump no less. Second jump Jim graciously tries to fly next to me but soon finds that going that slow is too tiring and again rockets away. The only saving grace for me is that he's throwing high on the new V-1 and I'm throwing, um, not high so getting some consolation time. I want a V-1 BAD. I mean BAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!! Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Jumping a wingsuit is only 50 jumps away for you if you want to start. Sounds like you've already made the throwout pc decision. So throw $20 in the cookie jar for each of the next 50 jumps and you'll have the bucks for the suit. Presto! Broke but happy! Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Thanks for the link Kris. Interestingly Mapsource tutorials are available for both Mac and pc but according to the link "our MapSource products don't support Macs at this time ". I guess that eventually we'll add a pc here as there is a lot of software that's pc only but my wife will never get over it. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Does anyone know if the Forerunner/Foretrex 201 is Macintosh friendly or is it pc only? Ditto for the Mapsource software. I've asked Garmin but haven't yet received a response. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

So I guess I'll have to wait for a tornado before I can pass you even on my S-3. 150 kts. groundspeed is definitely smokin! I'm going to pick up my new/old rig from VSE on Friday and hopefully make a few jumps on the way home, it'd be great if you can come out. Flying over the horizon is one of my goals. Hey Kris, I thought that was you, hard to tell from your profile. I sure had a good time at the boogie (just got back from Arizona and had no real net access). I really enjoyed flying and learning with everyone, particularly you, Taya and Tonto. My ws partner here also flies a silver /black suit, a GTI though. I never did figure out how you liked the uni. I'm pretty broke but I get it practically for free diving here. A nice bit of irony considering that it costs about $100/lb. retail. I fly my wingsuit on about 8/10 jumps so hopefully the S-3 will become second nature pretty soon. Beside the great flocking dives we had, the New Years Eve wingsuit jump at midnight from the DC-3 was pretty amazing. I'm now trying to figure out how to make the birdboogie at Lodi in May and how to get my next balloon fix. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Yep, it was only my 9th jump on the S-3 (I had about 60 on my GTI). I got the balloon ticket at the X-mas boogie but due to wind/schedule wasn't able to get a balloon ride until Friday (lucky for me since I left for home that day). I made several jumps on the new w/s a few days before and felt pretty comfortable doing the balloon. BTW the S-3 is much harder to fly than the GTI both technically and physically but pays off especially in forward speed. I haven't done any flocks with it yet but will hopefully get some in soon. I hated to sell the GTI but had to to get the S-3. Kris, did we get any flocks in at the boogie? Sushi dinner? I met so many people and had so much fun there that it's all getting blurry. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Got to do a balloon jump (Thanks Burner) Friday at Eloy on my "new" S-3. Without a doubt one of the coolest experiences of my life. Any birdies who haven't done one should consider doing ANYTHING it takes to make this jump. My body had a tasty swoop across the desert but my brain hasn't landed yet. Sweeeeet! Just keep in mind that someone you jump with might not like the idea of being kicked by your boots. Also they could be hard to run in, betcha run out every one of your hornet landings.Maybe think in terms of an ankle wrap but don't listen to me, talk to your doctor. No personal experience but had a major line twist opening at 12.5k on a cross country jump this summer, didn't spin up so not a chopper. Got me thinking about "what if" though. Obviously saving your ass is priority but since riding a spinner down to 2k isn't an option (and it was really cloudy) kissing an $1800 canopy goodbye would have been the result. Also a terminal reserve opening (ouch) and land out who knows where or lose the reserve bag/pc instead. Hold on to a riser then chop? Someone is pulling your leg or doesn't have a clue. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Thicker soled shoes are a good idea, I'm trying to avoid another discipline-specific piece of gear though as boots are bad for freefly, rw and tuf surfs. I'm leaning toward a strap of some kind like fish is planning. In the mean time rubber bands sound like a good bandaid. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

Thats kind of what I was thinking. What materials will you use and where are the attachment points? Yeah, my GTI is second hand. Snug on the guy it was made for (5'-10" !80 lbs.) "comfortable" on me (5'-9" 165 lbs.). Sometimes you eat the bear..............

I've had a bootie blow off a couple of times doing aerobatics. My GTI was made for someone about an inch taller than me. Unzipping the leg with that problem is nearly impossible. If they both blew off and since I have no LQRS landing could be ugly, especially landing out. Anyone have a reasonable fix for this? Sometimes you eat the bear..............

As far as I can tell there are 5 classes of human airframe. From best to worst, in my opinion. I'm trying to figure how to use this "new" information. Even if I knew how to place myself in these subjective categories it wouldn't change a thing. Besides, you missed a few classes. Like tall and medium, medium and light etc. I'll be up all night wondering how to fit into the chart and then probably forget by next jump anyway. Don't mind me, I had sarcasm for lunch and am still picking it out of my teeth. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

I have a 120 that opens pretty fast. I changed the slider to one that has the same span but is about 2" wider chordwise. The canopy opens with much less shock, still fairly quick but without the snap it used to have. I use it exclusively for wingsuit jumps (I tested it bellyflying) so my opinion is skewed but my big breakthrough was a packing variation that occurred to me after a base packing discussion. I now have smooth, sweet, consistent on-heading openings pitching in full flight or with a 1 second delay. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

130 lbs. @ 1.2 w.l. =108 s.f. canopy 210 lbs. @ 1.2 w.l. =175 s.f. canopy The performance difference you are talking about here is really pretty significant. Sseveral drag factors contribute to a higher airspeed on the smaller canopy (less drag = higher airspeed): shorter lines, smaller jumper, thinner airfoil, smaller span. Also because the entire system is physically smaller and faster it turns quicker (more responsive). The combination of higher speed and increased responsiveness make the handling difference fairly substantial, possibly critical for a relatively inexperienced jumper. Lots of original Sabres are being jumped regularly, many by people who (gasp) actually prefer them and many by low-timers as a step from student stuff to something sportier. I use a 120 for a wingsuit canopy. They are a good non-elliptical canopy. While not considered high-performance they make up for that in stability and forgiveness. Yes they are noted for fast openings (good for extending wingsuit flight times) but careful packing and, if necessary, slider variation tames that. Do a search, there are a lot of Sabre opening posts. If your 190 opens ok and you are capable with it go fly the shit out of it, you can learn a lot with a Sabre-1 and have fun too. As usual it all comes down to what you can afford to do. Brand new custom fitted, custom colored gear is real nice and real expensive. There is a lot of good used gear available for much less bucks if you can find something that's adequate or better. BTW even though you think that you'll want to keep jumping your "new" gear for 3-4 years and only do 50 jumps/year you, like many other hooked fish, may find out differently. Most new jumpers seem to be better off buying used for their first rig. That will give you some time jumping your own rig inexpensively while learning what container and canopies will likely suit you for the next few years. It will also free up some bucks for jumpsuits, alti, helmet, beer etc. Sometimes you eat the bear..............

My remarks are based on my experiences. I've owned two Stilettos and liked them well enough. I've got several jumps on Cobalts and like them better because they dive much longer, seem faster, definitely swoop farther and seem to have a more powerful flare. I think that they are a product of a more advanced design. My Cobalt openings have been at least as good as the Stiletto's and were definitely two-stage. Either canopy should open well if set up and packed correctly. I'd be jumping one now if I wasn't hooked on the Xaos. Pardon the pun. Sometimes you eat the bear..............
